Extension of Underdogs Thread MCAT 24 or less

Oh it's bad. I don't even know how it's possible to score so low. It's not like I'm a complete idiot but I certainly feel like it now.

24----->15 I'm awesome.
I'll just sit back and wait for all those rejections now....

Guys I need your advice. I have a 3.65 Cumulative, 3.5 Science GPA 19 MCAT (7ps,6vr,6bs). I am already verified with my app. This is my 4th app cycle to DO schools and I have above average EC's and a killer personal statement. Do I stand a chance this cycle and if so which schools do I need to apply to?

Did you feel any different on test day? More stressed? Maybe test anxiety?

I'm gonna say that you most likely don't have a chance with a 19. How old is your 19 if you have been applying for four cycles already?

This is your 4th app and you're applying in November? With a 19? Honestly, I think you need to be candid and consider whether or not you can get a decent score and if not, then you need to consider other careers.

Just received it today. previous score was 17.

How did you feel coming out? I'd recommend calling for a rescore.

Yes, the reason it is so late was because of the 17 mcat. I was avg 25 on the aamc practice test and only improved to a 19.

If 3 failed cycles weren't enough to motivate you to score decently I'm doubtful a 4th will either. I'm not going to try to sugar coat this and I don't want to be an ass. But wasting more time on this when you could be doing other things like nursing and move forward with your life is not worth it. I'm sorry, but many times things don't work out. But putting in more energy and money into this is foolish when you can't break a 20.

Try the mcat once again. If you can hit a 25 then you can get in. But if not, you are going to need to really be serious and evaluate whether or not you should pursue other things.

PS. DO NOT SPEND ANYMORE MONEY ON APPLICATIONS. DO NOT APPLY THIS YEAR.
If you can score well apply June 1st.

Well I've had a rather unusually poor experience with this test so I do have a certain level of anxiety but I was averaging 28-29 on practice tests. So I felt really confident going in and coming out.
Problem was that I somehow unplugged my monitor and lost 15-20 minutes during PS but it kept coming loose throughout the test. I know lost precious time in each section and should've voided but stupidly didn't and now I have this.....a freaking 15. I don't even know if I can come back from that. How can I? This looks horrible. Anyone have any advice? Please no one be a d-bag right now. ;)

Well, if it's documented then it's not as bad if it was otherwise. But yah, prepare to retake.

Seriously thought I did pretty damn good and felt confident. Even with my computer issues I only randomly guessed on PS and only on about 10 questions.

I appreciate the advice. I am definitely motivated and was motivated for this test. Unfortunately I have a lot on my plate with sickness, tragedy, and major test anxiety. I am by no way using any of that as an excuse but I feel that I would be throwing away a great opportunity of becoming a DO if I don't continue to pursue this.

Yup heading for a retake...sucks. After I left the testing center I immediately emailed the MCAT resource center about it.

My last test the proctor actually closed the screen down and I had to wait almost 2 hours for them to reload my test....so yeah I got a little anxiety about the MCAT...lol.

I understand, all I'm saying is take a step back and at the minimal take sometime for a breather to deal with that. Life is more than just a single goal oriented thing. You should take your time to become the best applicant you can. And if you decide to do something else, chances are you'll be just as happy.

I think you need to practice more either way. You shouldn't feel confident after guessing on 10 questions point blank.

Maybe LMU-DCOM's SMP might accept you. Even then, I think 20 is the cutoff.

It wasn't by choice. 2 proctors were under the workstation trying every cord to fix my screen. That took almost 15 minutes. I'm sure the others nearby were thrilled with that commotion.
However practicing more never hurt anyone.

Can you contact the MCAT resource center about this? Obviously this would have had a detrimental effect on your score, regardless of if you were able to finish all the questions or not. The psychological impact of having your screen freeze up, rushing through the remaining questions and overall having less time to answer each question than you would have is a pretty decent reason to get a score that low, IMO. I would try to do something ASAP, best case scenario, maybe they can remove the 15 from your record. Up to you, but I would call someone first thing tomorrow to try and do something, especially since you had contacted the MCAT resource center right after your exam.

Hey i was just curious about this...is a SMP really necessary for DO school? Couldn't someone just upgrade their marks and use the grade forgiveness policy?
I'm a low GPA applicant (3.0 cGPA), but my plan is to just re-take my D's and F's next year to get that GPA boost and apply for next cycle!
True it's not necessary, but I was suggesting the SMP for the low MCAT question posed by Golfusa24. It looks like a good program in general. You take up to 3 DO courses. If you get accepted into the DO program, you don't have to repeat them, which is not the case for other SMPs, like CCOM.

Does your results show a Y under tested under non-standard conditions? If so, then you can explain the situation during your interviews (whether you retake the exam or not), since it is documented.

I am going to shoot straight with you and I really want to help you here.

1) You need to see a learning specialist/counselor and see if you can find a more effective way of studying for the exam.
2) See if the university has a psychologist so you can deal with any test anxiety you have.
3) I suggest trying to see if you have a learn disability. This maybe an issue that is causing you to not score as high as you should.

Serenade is correct in say that you should take a step back and deal with the issues you have first. True that life will throw things at you, but you need to take control of life when it does. This may mean taking time to deal with underlying issues you have. If you are in your 20s you still have time to deal with them (I would also say the same in your early 30s). Make sure take care of them from here on out. Good luck.

I would tell you to wait till next year on this one. However, it still depends on your stats and if you are willing to take any school you are given (if you want to apply this year). If you really badly want to take the plunge, you should apply right now. (I am going to scold a little bit here) You should have sent your app in prior to your MCAT for three reasons 1) your app would be processed around the same time as it takes your MCAT score to come out 2) you just need to apply to one school and you won't be a reapplicant to other schools if you decide to pull out and apply next cycle 3) you don't even need your LORs to get your app processed. This would have saved a lot of time. If you are going to act, act now. Otherwise, I highly suggest waiting out this cycle.

I can wait until the next cycle if its too late. Here are my stats:

~cGPA 3.14 with a post-bacc of 3.86 (Application: cGPA 3.22 sGPA 3.24)
~Graduated with 2x B.S in biological science & chemistry
~President & Treasurer for multiple student-board clubs
~Over 400 volunteered hours in a hospital
~Volunteered in multiple events (non-clinical) annually
~Shadowed 3 D.Os (Family Medicine, Orthopedic hand surgeon, and Hematology/Oncology) with (2 LORs) with total of 130ish hours
~Worked in sales for 7 years and have significantly improved my social and customer service skills.
~Currently working in an ER (work with +7 different doctors, MDs. In the process of getting an LOR from one of them)
~Retook my MCAT on 11/7....... waiting on the score T.T

Im not picky on where I go.

I suggest waiting out the cycle. Your GPAs will net pretty good interviews if you apply earlier next year. If your MCAT is good, even the top tier schools may show some love with an early app. Waiting for the MCAT can be a scary thing and if you know your score now and apply next year, all the better. Good luck.

Totally already did that. They were extremely prompt in replying, which is surprising. Quite frankly I was told that once your test is scored there is no way to make changes/void scores. Otherwise everyone would with a crap score would. They don't really care about the reason either or whether it was previously documented.

Yes, it does indicate non-standard conditions Y. For interviews I feel like I would be making excuses which is not something I do. It makes me uncomfortable which will be obviously.

LUCOM hasn't sent me a secondary yet and its over a month. I have a 24 => 22 with 5VR each section. I called and they said its cause my verbal sucks. Just an FYI. Maybe balanced is better than higher overall but unbalanced.

Looking at that list, we are balling guys.
Or maybe, most of you aren't really underdogs. IMO, a true underdog should have < 50% chance and struggle to get even a single interview. What most of you actually are is on the lower end of competitive.

probably so. i just met the MCAT criteria so i jumped aboard lol. gotta associate with someone!

need some support during this tough time lol:

I don't know this thread seems pretty modest. I know I'm still waiting on IIs.

I got accepted to LMUs post bacc. I'm pretty excited about that! Still no med school ii yet.

I interviewed at lucom last cycle and was wait listed. This cycle, even with better stats I haven't gotten a secondary, to which the school told me that they "are in a different position this year and have about 3x the number of applications." Kind of upsetting but I'm in the same boat with ya.

I was just put on hold at LMU-DCOM and told to update them with anything that would make me more "competitive". Well, I can't retake the MCAT till next year, I have 3 classes this spring but won't have grade till late spring :/

I was thinking of applying to LMU's post-bacc now as a backup and to enhance my uncompetitive app :)

When did you apply, if you don't mind me asking?

It sounds more expensive than just retaking the Mcat.

MCAT:24 (9-8-7)

Accepted at LUCOM! There is hope!!

Having been on a medical brigade also helped!

It's a difficult decision considering my GPA is not bad, but in order to get over this latest MCAT hurdle I think my application needs to be better overall not just in one category.

I think if you get a 26 or higher most schools will forgive you for not voiding....

I'm confused

I was joking, everyone is freaking out cause there are no seats available for the "old" MCAT literally anywhere except places like Guam or Thailand. I'll be taking the new MCAT anyway. Which might not be bad coming off a semester of Biochem.

My humor is on the dry side with a splash of sarcasm.

I applied to the post bacc at LMU in the beginning of October-ish. As of now I plan on attending unless I get an acceptance in the spring from a med school.
