So I have been given the honor of being accepted into FSU and I love FSU and what it has to offer me.

Early Start in May; FSU has a summer session where we, the students, just take Anatomy Lab.

I am in love with the clinical rotations, FSU gives it students the opportunity to be first hand with the doctors during 3rd and 4th yr.

I got great vibe from the students, professors, etc at FSU.

I really like the whole rural atmosphere of Tally.

BUT FSU is far from home, my support group and expensive.

I have also given the honor of being interviewed at FAU and hopefully I will be accepted.

At the interview I really did not get a great vibe from the staff or students. I actually felt like they were persuading me to go to another school.

After hearing abut the course schedule and what they have to offer I was not impress, I felt like FAU only selling points were that they have a
small class
faulty from UM
they are near the beach, which I don't care for
their curriculum is similar to what ivy med school uses
in addition to that FAU would be near my support system,
AND VERY CHEAP (I could live at home)

Do you need your support group? If so, then go to FAU.

But from the sound of it, if you can be away from your support group, then it sounds like FSU is a much better fit for you.

Congratulations on your success.

I don't know too much about FSU. However, I got accepted to FAU a few months ago and I can share my thoughts with you. FAU is a very new school. Yes, they are trying to work with a modern curriculum but I wouldn't feel comfortable attending. After talking to some of the students there.. I did not get a good vibe.

With regards to rotations, they have you do 2-3 rotations and then you take the Shelf exams for those rotations after you're done. This sounds a little bit scary to me, since it makes more sense to take a Shelf exam immediately following a particular rotation. I can't imagine having to take 2-3 Shelf exams in one week... When I asked a student about this, she wasn't even sure what a Shelf exam is. I don't really blame her for not knowing, she was a first year student after all. However, this tells me that they don't do a good job of explaining the curriculum to the students.. and it's little details such as the Shelf exams that we should consider when making a decision.

Aside from this, I can understand your desire to stay close to home and enjoy the support of your family as well as the cheaper costs. I don't think it's worth it though. FSU is a much better school offering you far greater opportunities that have been established over the years. You will build a support system with friends in Tally, and you won't face the distraction of living at home (even if it is cheaper).

I'm pretty sure you won't regret attending FSU, whereas you might regret FAU later.

I got into both schools as well. Let me first say that both schools will provide you a good medical education.

With that being said, FSU is the hands down favorite if I had to choose between the two. More established, excellent clinical exposure (Step 2 scores were 20 points above the national average), warm/receptive faculty, and overall more organized. Like others, I did not get a good vibe from FAU during my interview. I would not feel comfortable going there. The only things that beat FSU are the location and maybe the facilities. And you mentioned that the location won't do much for you. While FAU may be cheaper for your personal situation, FSU is among the cheapest schools in state.

So I started searching for housing near FSU and my helicopter mom having a frenzy I feel bad but, she needs to realize I am growing up. ( I stayed home for UG so I been living life with my parents my whole life).

I really like FSU but my mom would be heartbroken if I left and she wants me to stay home and go to FAU.

Should I just ignore her and go to FSU?

Go to the second looks for both schools if you're not sure, but I agree with the others that it sounds like you already know you'd rather go to FSU. In that case, the best thing to do is to sit down with your mom and have an honest discussion about you going to FSU. Granted, free room and board x 4 years is pretty huge and not to be sneezed at. Still, Tally isn't that expensive of a city to live in, and you won't be prohibitively far away where you can't have a weekend home or have your parents come up to see you once or twice a month. And if you've never been away from home, well, you're presumably in your early 20s now, and yes, it's probably not a bad thing for you to see what it's like to pay your own bills. 😉
