Hi everyone! I was wondering if people have kept up with the developments regarding the commentary made by Harvard President Lawrence Summers about women in science.... I am both angry and deeply troubled that the President of a leading educational institution can believe that the reasons why women are not advancing in science are because women have babies and because women have less innate ability to do well in science and math as compared to men??? 😕 😡

One of my former professors was at this conference when he made this statement... I also listened to Nancy Hopkins from MIT and the Brown Univ dean for the Women in Science & Engineering program speak about this on a radio show this morning.... I haven't heard anything from other students about it though - any thoughts?

There's a big thread about it in Pre-Allo. However, I suggest reading this article which neatly summarizes what was said and not said.

However, since this was posted in the Biomed Science forum, try and keep an open mind when discussing the topic.

Well, i do understand why there are few women engineers. Its always been known that testosterone does play a role in the formation and development of the brain and becuase of this men do have (on average) better spatial abilites..

Now i know some of the femi-nazis will have you believe the opposite, but feel this is true.

Just becasue they have babies doesnt mean they can do science or math., thats crazy
