Hi guys I need some advice!

I currently have a 3.8 gpa, but after this semester with ochem and micro I’m definitely getting a B- in ochem 🙁 one bad test and it being a point based class with tests being 400 points, I dropped my points down and even with the next exam and final I’ll scrape by with that B- if I get the grade I want on those. This will being me down to a 3.76, not a significant drop, but will earning that B- and a B in micro lower my chance of acceptance when I send in my transcripts?? I’ve had a few Bs scattered throughout but I’m nervous about having several in a semester and not looking like a strong candidate. If I’m overreacting please let me know! I have 2 weeks left and I just want to get through it with my sanity in check
If you have a 3.8, a handful of Bs in one semester isn’t going to singlehandedly destroy your chances, no. A B, and even a B-, is still a good grade, especially in a class as notorious as organic chem. A 3.76 is absolutely a perfectly fine GPA (it’s well above average).

Is this your cumulative GPA or your prerequisite science GPA? If it’s the former, ISU doesn’t consider cumulative GPA past ensuring that you meet the minimum of 2.5 to be eligible for admission so it won’t affect your chances at that school in particular regardless. ISU only actually uses prerequisite science GPA and last 45 hours GPA in their calculations.

ETA: If it helps calm your nerves a bit, I definitely had a C (in biochem) on my fall transcript the year that I applied to vet school; still got into ISU. Point being that if your application is otherwise solid, it shouldn’t significantly impact your odds either way.

My science GPA for them is 3.59, last 45 3.62 (off the top of my head) it’s lower than other schools cause of what prereqs they take, which is what makes me so nervous!!! Thank you for taking the time to respond, it makes me feel a lot better! I guess I’ve just been nervous that I might be in good standing, send in my transcripts, and then toss my application out when they see I didn’t do as well as I have other semesters I know it’s silly, but knowing the lower grade is in Ochem does make me feel better as most people I know hated the class! You can’t even get an A if you miss more than 20 points

Rejected OOS for being below the required science GPA! Oh well, saw it coming!

Same here, OOS as well, woke up from a nap after studying for 3 exams this week to that :blackeye: oof. Oh well, like @EngrSC said, we still have more schools to hear from. Hopefully with good news!

OOS rejection. I was 0.01 away from the required science gpa. I wish they would’ve at least read the explanation statements..
Wow, that is really frustrating. I am sorry to hear that :blackeye:

What is the minimum science gpa required?
There’s no actual hard minimum requirement to be eligible to apply as there is with cumulative GPA, but this year’s science GPA cutoff was reportedly set at 3.0, according to an SDN member who emailed inquiring about it.

Hey everyone, just got denied today. They're slowly working on them and the minimum required science is 3.0 (They will not round). Good luck everyone!!!!

Well ladies and gents, I could really use some positive vibes!! A few weeks ago, I was worried about getting a C+/B- in ochem.. now, I’m getting a C if I can get an 89 on my final. I’m a mess of nerves and have been practicing my butt off, ochem is just NOT my forte and I didn’t get the grade I needed on the last exam to keep my grade in the range I wanted. This will be my first C and I’m terrified because I CANT get a C- since most of the schools I applied to don’t take them.. aughhhhhhhhhh

Don’t freak! One C is not bad and people understand one bad grade! I got a C+ in general chemistry, but i was going through my parents divorce, a hard course load and I had to primarily take care of my sisters while doing all of my extra curricular activities. Took it the summer of 2018 and got an A+. If you explain to them why, they will understand! They are people too 🙂

Ive gotten 2 Cs in my undergrad (one from Gen Chem and another from an elective phys class) and I've been invited to two interviews so far and have gotten through academic review in 2 other schools. I think the moral is that grades do not define you and that vet school understands that, thats why most schools try to look at the applicant as a whole. If a vet school were to really reject you over that then it's probably not a school you'd want to attend anyways. Goodluck on your final and try to enjoy your life & not stress about grades!! Life's too short to give yourself a headache about O chem!

Thank you, I’ve never struggled with a subject so much before and I’ll be glad when it’s over on Thursday. I’ve been invited for an interview at 2 schools as well so I’ve been so scared to send in my transcripts and them see the grade! I just want to get the grade I need on the final and move on so I can do well in my last semester!! Again thank you for responding it’s nice to talk to you guys who can be unbiased towards me and tell me your honest opinions about grades/classes! Good luck on your interviews!!!

Has anyone sent their transcript? If so, is it by mail or electronically?
I sent mine electronically and by mail.....just in case. My electronically delivered transcript has not been downloaded yet as of today. I keep getting notifications from the transcript delivery service that it has not been downloaded by the recipient.

I tried to search for this answer, but when should we hear back? Not until February?

Ya once you’re in committee review you don’t hear back until final decisions are sent out in mid February. I’ve been in committee review since October I believe :dead:

Message in the portal came in today. It’s just about sending fall transcripts by 1/20/2020. Do you still have to send anything if you didn’t take any summer/fall courses? Should I check in with them just in case?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN

No, it says in the message that if these grades weren’t on your VMCAS app then you would have to send them in. If you didn’t have Fall or Summer 2019 grades then you are fine

My portal was updated today with transcript info. Current isu student, just to give some update for you guys🙂

Popped into the Pre-Vet forum from the Vet forum. Current ISU student, class of 2020, about to graduate. So nostalgic to read through these threads four years later.

For those who were accepted, congratulations. ISU is a wonderful school, and I wouldn't have wanted to go anywhere else! For those who weren't, do not give up! So many people apply numerous times; I can imagine it may be disheartening, but it in no way reflects your intelligence or ability to become a veterinarian. Keep moving forward!

Good luck! Happy to answer any Q's you have about my wonderful experience at ISU!

Has anyone else sent in their fall transcript and have not had their portal a updated yet? My school delivered my transcript on 1/3 and no changes yet. I know they have tons to go through, but since the request takes a couple days to process/send out I’m starting to think I should call just to check that it was received.

I sent mine on 12/13 and it wasn’t updated. I resent the request on 1/6 and they updated it that day.

How do you know if they’ve received your transcript? What changes in the portal?

Thanks! Definitely didn’t see any change to my portal and my transcript was sent 1/5 so I emailed my transcript person. He/she updated it right away and sent me a message in the portal saying to contact them there and not through email :smack:

Nervous because my gpa dropped significantly for Iowa after Ochem.. am retaking it but now I feel like all chances of acceptance got thrown out of the window

If its above a 3.0, you should still be in the running.

Iowa has originally calculated mine as 3.62 and now it’ll be something like 3.4. Waiting for them to update my portal but it’s definitely not amazing compared to before! Keeping my hopes up though

Has anyone else not seen any updates on transcripts? I emailed a month ago to check and they never responded so I messaged in the portal over two weeks ago and they responded that they had a lot of transcripts and that they would let me know when they come across mine. I am just stressed out now because I sent them in like month and half ago and they still haven't said anything

I wouldn’t worry about it at this point, that’s all they have left to do before we find out, they’re already done scoring everything else and they said February 15 at the latest for official decisions so I wouldn’t worry too much until closer to that time! (but also it never hurts to call if you’re super worried🙂 )

Since February 15th is the latest, when does everything think we will hear back?
