Iowa State c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you so much, it means a lot. I just hope this goes to show to never give up on your dreams! It took me 4 application cycles to finally get accepted!
Also been rooting for you 🙂. Your hard work and positive attitude have paid off and you will do great at K-State.

Congrats everyone who is accepted and on the waitlist! Kathy is the lady in charge of the message board and she would love for any questions to be directed there but I can answer basic questions for anyone with them! March 28th and April 4th are the visit dates for you guys and you can RSVP through your portal link!

Thank you for offering to answer questions!

Will we recieve any sort of confirmation from ISU that our intent to remain on the alternate list form has been recieved?

Do they ever pull people off the alternate list before the April commitment deadline?

My portal, in the Applicatio Status, now says Concluded - Alternate - No Response. I'm assuming it will change to either remain or decline once they sort through our responses.

If you look at last years, this is what it looked like. Looks like it took ~a week or so.

On April 4th on SDN, there is a post that talks a little about this. Looks like they were on #15.

How many do they generally put on the alternate list?
Looks like last year they had 345 to start.

Hi All! Last-minute invitation to our student panel at 6:00pm CST this evening. Register here: Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Student Panel Discussion. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

Also a shout out to our current veterinary students on here. They've been giving great guidance! If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to post them on your Message Board via the Supplemental Application.

Best,
ISU-CVM Admissions/Recruitment

I feel like I should know this but will they be ranking the alternates? I thought I read this but now I can't find where...

OOS alternate, strongly thinking about going to one of the preview days in case I'm taken off the wait list, but that's also more time and money. I have an uneasy feeling that I only have 3 days to decide to accept if I'm called off the waitlist, especially if I haven't seen Ames or ISU. Anyone have advice or input? some background: I'm from PA and mostly interested in food animal

I don’t think there is any harm in keeping your name on the list and seeing where you are at when the number is revealed on March 20th. Both preview days are after when you find out what number you are on the list and if you believe you are in a good spot (100 or lower has usually been a safe bet in the past according to previous threads) to be called off the list, i would go to a preview day. Another pro, if you go and you love it and you don’t get into other schools or have to reapply, you’ll KNOW you want to go there. If you don’t like it = you don’t go to school there and apply elsewhere.

What part of PA? I’m originally from Maryland and went to ISU, tracked mixed but practice small animal now. Ames is a pretty typical college town, though the vet school is on its own little corner of campus away from the main undergrad area. If ISU is your cheapest option and you get in off the waitlist, I strongly recommend attending. Lots of opportunities to get involved in all aspects of food animal med from your first semester, whether that’s swine, cattle, small ruminants, etc.

Originally northeast PA, by tristate area of NY/NJ/PA. so far i have been accepted to university of tennessee and mississippi. although i just cant see myself at mississippi. but really interested in all of the large animal opportunities at iowa.

Hi I don't mean to butt in lol but Mississippi State is an AMAZING school and Starkville is the best college town ever. I am super bias because that is where I went to undergrad and it is where I want to go back for vet school but you should definitely consider that school because I really dont think you would regret it at all! I was waitlisted as an instate student there and I am so upset so take advantage of being accepted because I am so jealous of you. But congrats and if you have any questions about the town and the school you can totally ask me! 🙂

Hi! Current ISU CVM 2nd year here (OOS). I agree with @bird.nerd that it definitely won't hurt to wait and see where you fall on the waitlist before making your decision. I came to ISU off of the waitlist myself and jumped into life in Ames with both feet, since I had never been here before and had also never toured the school in person (I got in after the April 15th general deadline so I missed the preview days as well). If I had had the opportunity to attend a preview day even while still on the waitlist I definitely would have done it (I could not due to financial and time restrictions but everyone is different in that aspect)! There is a virtual tour that is on the ISU CVM Future Students facebook page from a couple of years ago that gives a good look into our campus. I'm happy to answer any other questions you have about the school! 🙂

Any OOS accepted students mind sharing their stats?

I'm non-trad, so here are some relevant numbers.

On Iowa State's Portal:

Required Science Course GPA: 4.00
Last 45 Credits GPA: 4.00

VMCAS:

My primary undergraduate school (the school I got a B.A. from): 2.84
Overall: 3.25
Overall Science: 3.67

Hopefully, this show's it's never too late to turn things around. (I'm 30 yrs old and my veterinary/animal experience is not impressive relative to other applicants)

Edit:

I also got this funny thing via email this same year: "In evaluating your credentials, we determined that your Illinois science course grade-point average (not the Science GPA calculated by VMCAS), does not meet the published minimum of 2.75 (A=4.00). Based on the transcript and application information available, we must deny you admission to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine for Fall Semester 2020."

So at Iowa State, they calculated a 4.00, while at Illinois they gave me less than 2.75. Goes to show how variable each school's calculations can be.

anyone else waitlisted expecting to get our number on the waitlist today? i was hoping it'd show up on our status page today like they said but not so sure now with the virus..
I haven' heard that it would be delayed, and they have been very good about communicating with us so far. I am waiting for it too though.

I am also waiting. I sent a message via the portal asking for my position. Hopefully we will hear something soon.

I assume they are going to do it just like when they sent out decisions, so 5pm (CST) most likely. I think they do this so they don’t get bombarded with calls and emails and they get the weekend off lol

Has anybody checked? I’m too nervous

Hey guys! Please be patient with Iowa State. This is a first for them to push everything online because of COVID. Keep in mind that a lot of staff have been asked to work from home and do not have access to their normal desktop utilities and are working with the IT department to get everything situated, including sending out status updates on the portal. We've been receiving emails left and right from professors, office of academic affairs, IT, and the dean of the college to ensure the quality of our education is still to its highest caliber.

Just received this message in response to alternate list update:

These will be posted Monday or Tuesday. The current situation with COVID-19 messed up my timeline for getting these up last week making other things in our Office of Academic & Student Affairs a priority. I am working on them this weekend and hope to have everything up by Tuesday (Monday if things go smoothly).

Kathy
