Kansas City University (KCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

Quick question. The secondary asks that we have a letter from premed committee and a doctor be sent DIRECTLY to KCUMB. Is it ok if the letters are sent through AACOMAS?

I sent my DO letter through AACOMAS and KCUMB was okay with it.
Seconded. They accept any or all letters through AACOMAS.

For first year yes. Second year there are "mini-case rounds" in which you only get a specific amount of time in the morning to read up on a patient. You do some research on it and present it to a physician (as if you are presenting the patient to an attending during morning rounds). Maybe @chizledfrmstone or @Stagg737 can better describe what grand rounds are like second year.

I hate getting up at 6:30 for these things but I have to admit they are kinda cool.

For every block we have one of these as a PCM CIS. So for CV you get a case released to your group (~7:30am) and it's the whole H&P, labs, imaging. Faculty just guide you along if you get lost. It won't be a complex case like the MGH ones. It's a simple case (pericarditis) and you will most likely have covered the pathophysiology of it already. You work with your group and interpret the labs + imaging and find out what they have. Then you just write out the admitting orders. Everyone meets in (~9:00am) AC200 and 1 group from each case (3 cases total) gets to go up and present their orders. It's really laid back exercise. You're done by 11-11:30am and then go home to study. Usually these are the week before a final.

It's a pretty cool learning experience because all the faculty are there and they will throw in some clinical advice.

Anybody have an idea of what seat situation is like? Would it be worth it to send in a secondary at this time?

Agree. I'll also add it's a good way to get some experience of getting 'nicely' torn apart by faculty when you forget something/say something wrong before you get to clinical rotations and get completely destroyed by preceptors. I feel like the transition into clinicals may be a little better for us than at some other schools, but idk for sure.

Hey everyone, congratulations to those who have been accepted so far.

For those of you who had suggested contacting Patti before, I have a question. I'm waitlisted, and had contacted her via text and email to see if there was any way I could learn more as to why I was waitlisted. She said absolutely via text, and told me to email her. I did, and never got a response. I followed up with a second email and second text (I was very polite), and never received a response. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to talk to someone and continue to show interest if I'm not getting a response...

And you're absolutely certain her replies didn't get sidetracked into your clutter or junk folders? The next step would be to call her and ask if maybe her replies got lost in cyberspace.

I am still mind bottled by the fact that I received an II from KCU (Completed on 9/16). I have below average stats, with 3.2 cGPA, 3.4 sGPA and 26 MCAT. How did I even get pass their screening? I'm thinking maybe it's a fluke or maybe they actually select candidates based on a whole person concept. Either way, I'm grateful for the opportunity and I need to rock this interview that's coming up soon, but still doubtful on my chance of acceptance.

I felt the exact same way when I got my II (first one and received 8 days after being complete). 3.49 cGPA/3.54 sGPA with lots of retakes and 26 MCAT on my second try, however lots of leadership/medical exposure. I think they must see something in us beyond our numbers. good luck to you and hopefully we can both make it to the class of 2020!

Anyone know when the 10/15 interviewers will hear back?

Interview invite is one thing, but actually getting an acceptance is another ball game. Speaking from personal experience

Woke up to an II! Now I just need to figure out which date, (only December left at this point). My bank account is definitely in pain due to me living on the West Coast and having to shell out $$$ for flights.

Is the class filled by December, (in other words, am I basically interviewing for a waitlist spot)?

Does anyone have Patti's email address and wants to pm me it? I only got her phone # on the interview day. I have a few questions for her (non urgent) that I want to shoot over in an email.

Just found out this monday that I got accepted! I interviewed back in September but I guess my GPA was a little low so they wanted to see what I got in biochem before they accepted me. However, Patti worked with me and said that I could send her my midterm scores and she could maybe get me in. Fortunately, I did really well on my last exam and they sent me an acceptance the same day! I'm way excited to go to KCU and meet everyone!

So I've been complete for about 4 weeks now. Any opinions on sending/not sending an email asking for an update since it's passed the 3 week time frame

I received an II towards the end of my fourth week being complete. I would hold out a little longer if I were you but if you're really curious, go ahead and shoot the email. They're pretty friendly.

Any reason tomorrow? I thought it was around 4 weeks to hear back but I don't remember. Interviewed 10/15

I think they said 2-4 weeks on interview day. And it looks like a lot of sdners have gotten their decisions between 2 and 3 weeks from their interview dates.

Yeah, from reading through the forum, it looks like 2 weeks is the minimum, and I'm just hoping for the best possible outcome!

ETA: I also interviewed on 10/15. The admissions admin said four weeks at the max and to email/call if it gets prolonged for some reason.

Plus the fact that you kept constant contact and showed interest probably told them you were interested in attending KCU.

Still worth sending in a secondary to here? Or is it too late?

that's awesome, congrats! I'm taking biochem right now too and have an upcoming interview, wondering if they may do the same for me. What was your GPA to be considered "a little low" if you don't mind sharing?

Are there any current KCU students here that I can PM to ask a few questions? 🙂

I had a 3.4 cGPA and a 3.19 sGPA 508 MCAT

Patti is so awesome.
Also holy ****, talk about pressure on your biochem exams lol

Hope your exams went well!! I was wondering if it is easy for students to enter research labs at the two other medical schools in the city if they are interested in that lab's research?

I think access to labs is easy but it is so hard to do research with this first year curriculum. i do not know anyone who is actually doing any research (bench work at least) who is in the first year. and rightly so, research wont be an excuse when you fail an exam and thats the last thing you want.

Thanks! If the interview is a closed file, should I bring up my poor performance during my undergrad, without being asked? Should I try to convince them that I've matured since undergrad, or should I let my grades do the talking to the ADCOM (not the interviewer).

Only answer ti the question they ask and if it permits, you can bring it up if it fits the prompt they ask!

Man, I was really hoping today would be the day...

Anyone interviewing on 11/5? Staying at the 816 let me know f you want to meet up before hand or so!

Congrats! You'll really love your day there.

Thanks!! Unfortunately the interview days they have offered all really suck because they're either the week before finals or during finals week. Picked the least crappy option, but its still gonna be rough
