So I find myself in a bit of a predicament here as I'm making my school choice. I've been accepted to AZCOM and KCOM, and I'm trying to decide between the two.

KCOM Pros:
  • kirksville is 6h drive from home
  • like the curriculum/block exam idea
  • low COL, cheaper than AZCOM

KCOM Cons:
  • very small town, I've been living in Chicago for 10 years
  • no rotations in Chicago for 3rd/4th years

AZCOM Pros:
  • possibility of chicago rotations for 3rd/4th year
  • great match list

AZCOM Cons:
  • stupid expensive
  • tests every week
  • Phoenix is really far from home

I'm non trad and I'd like to practice in Chicago. My fiance lives here and will not be moving with me; he's got a great job and neither of these schools is in an area where there's a lot of jobs in his sector. SDN, help please! My deposit is due at KCOM on Monday.

KCOM. Great school and it saves you money which is more important than any percieved difference between these schools.

Your medical school will not affect where you can/will practice; so going to school in Phoenix or rural MO. does not mean that you'll be forced to end up in those places.

Will it matter for residency? I am hoping to go back to Chicago for residency.

Nope, your board scores, and to a lesser extent your rotation grades will matter more for that than anything else.

If you want a residency in Chi-town you need to meet people who can help with that now, and you will likely be helped by rotating in Chicago as a visiting student during 3rd year and early 4th year.

But neither school will give you a better chance of matching in Chicago, that's 100% up to you.

I'll be starting at AZCOM this fall, but for your situation it sounds like KCOM is a no brainer. You'll be able to do 4th year audition rotations in Chicago more than likely, so you should have no problem getting a residency there.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm at MWU's glendale campus now working on my master's degree. I applied and have been accepted pending an open seat at KCOM. I am moving back closer to home (I also got into KCUMB & UP-KYCOM all of these schools are 6-7hr drive from home). AZCOM generally accepts the master's students but they wait list us and then pull is in. Some of my friends are upset that I'm even considering other schools.

There is nothing wrong with AZCOM. It's a great school and I've got several friends in the program. It's beautiful weather and the exams every week really aren't that bad (try the Master's program we have 2-3 exams every week). It really just helps you keep up with the material. AZCOM is really good about doing post-exam reviews too. I know this is something that a lot of KCOM individuals wish they still had (spoke to students at the interview). But it is very far away and it is expensive to fly back over the long breaks, and a long, expensive drive back too. But really only you can make this choice. Decide what is important to you and chase it.

A huge congrats on getting into both! That is quite the accomplishment!
