LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so i still have some reservations about the whole pbl pathway thing. in comparison to normal courses how much info do you really cover? another thing that i find intimidating is perhaps not having an instructor that is an expert in an area i have a question in, as one would have to be a superhuman to know all about biochem/embryology/path/phys/etc. I'm not sure how confident I am in the pbl pathway is all, any ideas/advice?

So I just moved my interview from 3/20 to 4/17, maybe one of you can snatch up the 3/20 date. My question is this, if LDP and PBL are both full, there isn't much left at LECOM is there?

Seton Hill PBL, and the waitlist for the hopes that people drop out of their LECOM spots.

I am sorry that nobody answered you. I hope that the information is not too late. Your e-mail about the interview should give you an attachment with places to stay. Actually, I believe that Comfort Inn with AAA discount was the cheapest at about $58 if I remember correctly so check that out. I also heard that there is possibly a van that will pick up so when you make reservations ask about that. The interview session starts at 8:00 a.m. and will be over by at least 1:00 p.m. There is an optional PBL demonstration in the afternoon.

Not sure if you had your interview yet but we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is attached to the indoor waterpark. It was a bit more expensive than the Comfort Inn but they were really nice about trying to book a room where it would be a bit quieter. Plus they do a late checkout of 2pm for interview candidates so they can get back and change. Wherever you stay make sure you ask for a late checkout so you're not stuck flying home in your interview clothes. Good luck!

I completed my secondary 3/1/09 and checked my status online in the portal today. It says " The committee has made a decision on your application. You will recieve a official letter in the mail within 30 days." Is this equivalent to rejection? No interview? I also got an application for their health sciences post-bacc program added to my portal. Sounds bad. Any info on this?

I stayed in a Super 8 off the interstate. It was a dump. The bed was pretty hard, the room was loud, and the heater didn't work right. Then again, I wanted to stay somewhere cheap and it fit the bill. I wouldn't recommend it.

I stayed in the Days Inn. Right off the highway, one of the cheaper places, clean and decent.

If you haven't interviewed its probably not good news, sorry 🙁. I only got that message after my interview, they e-mailed me the actual invite.

Yay! Got my acceptance letter yesterday. Interviewed 3/5 and accepted into Seton Hill (first choice) for PBL. Most likely will be going.

Hey everyone, I was just notified that I will be placed on the waitlist on the main campus in Erie.:scared: I was wondering about the amount of movement that one can typically expect based on past years? (5 people, 35 people??) Any help would be appreciated, I really think I want to go here!😍

Also, I applied for the lecture based class

Looking at last year's thread it seemed like there was some movement around April and later. Many times people seemed to be holding their spots at LECOM and then as they were accepted to schools that they liked better they'd pull out. I'd suggest doing what people did last year and periodically calling Amy to check your status on the waitlist. Also if there's anything you can do to update them (new volunteering, LOI, new grades, etc) make sure you let them know and send them a letter. Good luck!

Congrats! I will see you there. We have a LECOM - Seton Hill Facebook page that I suggest you join too.

Thanks! Are you from the Philly area too? I'm about 30 min. from Philly right now. Chose Seton Hill over the Erie campus because a 4 hour drive from home doesn't seem nearly as bad to me as that killer 6-7 hour trek up to Erie. That's a whole day of driving to me. At least at Seton Hill I can go home for an occasional weekend more easily. Plus the weather should be a little better (less snow) and I really wanted PBL for more of an independent schedule which was full at Erie already. I do wish there were some better rotations available in the Philly/South Jersey/North Delaware region.

hey folks.....I interviewed at LECOM Erie last week, and I see this under the admissions status on the portal:

The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days.

Does this mean I've been rejected?

No, it means you'll be receiving a letter in the mail regarding your decision. Good luck!
Depending on how far you are from LECOM you letter should really come withing 2-3 weeks, it took my letter 2 weeks.

Yeah like the guy above said, this was the message I got in the portal before getting my acceptance. Always annoyed me that they could post that they've made a decision but not actually what the decision was.

This got posted on a wednesday, I had the letter by the following monday.

Hey can any LECOMers give an estimate of their average electric/cable/internet costs per month? Thanks

Hey can any LECOMers give an estimate of their average electric/cable/internet costs per month? Thanks

My bill WAS $83 a month for high speed internet and digital cable w/a DVR...it was a promotion and at the time was the same amount for digital w/all the channels vs. just basic. That was a year long and just expired and now its a little over $100 b/c I refuse to give back my DVR which I would have to if I wanted just basic cable. I split my bill w/another person. I could also make my bill cheaper by using slower internet if I wanted to.

I have been surprised by the number of people in DO school interviews who claim that they have been asked about their MCAT. But, however, I don't doubt it happened. I put it in LECOM because a few years ago I was also asked about my MCAT.

We all know how we feel about the MCAT. Here is a bit of humor about a fictitous pre-med who just snapped after being asked about the MCAT score in one too many interviews:

Interviewer: What was your MCAT score?
Applicant: Uh, Uh, you didn't even ask my name yet?
Interviewer: Okay, what is your name and your MCAT score but tell me your MCAT score first?
Applicant: My MCAT score was a 20. But, you didn't want to know my name did you? So what now? Is the interview over?
Interviewer: No, of course not, now tell us about yourself starting with your name.
Applicant: My name is Ed and I cannot do the MCAT. I have taken the MCAT seven times. I don't know WHY I can't do the MCAT. I've done everything right. I took AP Chemistry and Physics. I graduated from Harvard with a degree in molecular biology. I have done research
at Johns Hopkins for seven years while I applied to medical school and re-took the MCAT.
Interviewer: Well, it seems to me that you should have done better on the MCAT than that. Your score is just too low for acceptance at most schools. What do you plan to do to improve your application?
Applicant: I am working on winning the nobel prize.
Interviewer: No, I meant what are you going to do to improve your MCAT score.
Applicant: Don't you want to know how I am going to win the nobel prize?
Interviewer: I would like to ask you about that some other time but the nobel prize is not in our ad-coms formula for admission to medical school. So I have to stick to the format. Let's go back to the MCAT.
Applicant: Well, I don't have anything else to say about the MCAT. I can't do the MCAT.
Interviewer: Okay, Do you have any questions for us?
Applicant: Yes, this is a DO school. I thought that my application was supposed to be considered on a wholistic basis just like your philosophy of medicine that a person is not just a bunch of parts. A person is a whole human being. Isn't this why I am interviewing here instead of Johns Hopkins besides the fact that I can't do the MCAT?
Interviewer: I think that I should stop you for a minute. Of course, the DO patient is treated as a whole human being. We are happy that you have read about osteopathic medicine so let's get back to the MCAT.
Applicant: Why can't you tell me whether I am going to be treated like a whole human being? Why do we have to talk about the MCAT?
Interviewer: I can see that your problem is that you just don't recognize the importance of the MCAT. If you did, you would have done something about it. So I would not be surprised, if we couldn't accept you.
Applicant: Of course, I know the importance of the MCAT. Everybody does. Ever since I became a pre-med, I am asked about the MCAT. I went to the post office to mail a letter. The clerk asked me my MCAT and when I said that it was a 20, she wouldn't let me buy a stamp.
Interviewer: Well obviously, even strangers have tried to help you understand how important the MCAT is.
Applicant: I can't take any more. Doesn't anybody know that the MCAT is the leading cause of depression and suicide among pre-med students?
Interviewer: We haven't heard of any suicides among pre-meds.
Applicant: Of course not, you never knew they were pre-meds. They couldn't cry out for help because they couldn't admit that they were pre-meds who couldn't do the MCAT.
Interviewer: Well Ed, I would recommend that you enter yourself into counseling so that you can learn to accept that you are just not cut out to be a doctor as proven by your MCAT score. That should help you avoid depression.
Applicant: But what about my twelve published research papers proving that nitric oxide, chemical formula NO, is the key to the fountain of youth?
Interviewer: How did you know that?
Applicant: Because viagara is a nitric oxide uptake inhibitor. It takes something old and withered and rejuvenates it.
Interviewer: So Ed, you proved that nitric oxide can rejuvenate ANYTHING??? old and withered? Uh, how does that work? Uh, no, let's get back to the MCAT.

Ed, who had never ever been violent or aggressive, snapped. He grabbed the fire hose from the wall mount and flooded the building. Nobody was hurt but all interviews were cancelled for the two weeks that it took everything to dry out.

Hmm so it would be 83$ for just basic cable and cable internet? Having premium cable is nice when I go home, but I've managed to live with basic cable at college and I could live with it up there. I don't need DVR either, I just have an entire external HD full of movies/tv shows I've "Acquired".

Electric bill average? I've heard 60-80 year round average, is that about right?

Hahaha funny, but I mean hey what can you expect? Med schools, whether its DO or MD, have to have some quantifying method of determining academic performance in some fashion. I'm not saying that the MCAT is the best way of doing that, neither is the overall GPA for that matter because certainly many applicants can show how their overall GPA doesn't reflect recent performance, but a school has to have a way of looking at someone and saying "Hey yeah he/she could probably do well here with hard work", or "he or she is obviously enthusiastic but probably won't be able to deal with med school, and will just increase our dropout %age"

This past month:
Electric: $23
Gas: $50
Cable Internet + "acquired basic TV" 😀: $45
Rent: $650

"Acquired" movies/tv shows as well as online TV replays are the way to go.

Electric goes up to $60ish in the summer and gas drops down to $15-20.

Does anyone know how they will inform people if they are taken off the waitlist? I keep checking my portal obsessively but I don't think it will come that way.

"she wouldn't let me buy a stamp."

hahahaha I'm still giggling!! Thank you for that!

Thanks. And when asked at my interview what I did relieve stress I said "oh, I make up silly stories to post on the internet." 😀

So I am pretty sure that I would not have been accepted to NSU COM from the looks of this post from their thread. There is no Dr. W. here is there?

I received the following email from Albert Whitehead:

Posting on Public Websites

Dear Class of 2013!!!
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that as a medical student you now have an expectation to conduct oneself as a professional. In these times of technology, I want to caution everyone to be mindful of the information that they post on line whether photos, or even comments that you may psot on websites such as myspace, facebook and Student Doctor.Net. Comments or photos that you post that are opinions or "fun" photos, might be considered inappropriate. I have scanned some of the most popular sites and have discovered some inappropriate postings and recommend that you take a moment and monitor what you have posted.
Best.........
Dr. W.

So I have narrowed the list down to a few places to consider living at. But I wanted to know if anyone recommends a certain place to live. I'm looking for a 1 BR place, apt or house. I want to see if any of the places I'm considering actually get recommended.

Hey Guys,

So I have an interview coming up and I was wondering if they're still using the standard list of questions for the interview. Can anyone who recently interviewed at LECOM provide some input as to what kind of questions they ask? Also, is it worth attending the PBL mock session? Thanks in advance 🙂

I'm not sure what you consider "recent" but I interviewed 2/9 and got all the standard questions that you can find in interview feedback.

Our PBL session ran pretty late, so if you have a flight or bus to catch, I wouldn't really risk it. Otherwise, why not? I thought it was fun.

DrMaz, where are you looking to live? I am looking at Laurel Springs and Laurel Ridge because of the close proximity to LECOM and the cost.

Just follow the questions on the interview feedback thread. They didn't ask me any difficult or ethical questions. Just the standard "Why DO?", "What are your strengths and weaknesses?", etc.
My PBL session ran for about an hour. It was pretty cool, but PBL isn't for me because I don't like to read textbooks a lot. I was able to drive to Pittsburgh for my flight and get there at least 2 hours before it left at 6. I'd attend the PBL session if possible. It's at least cool to see how PBL works.

Cost? It seems from what I've seen while looking that Laurel springs/ridge are 100$/month more expensive just for being across from LECOM.

I've just been offered an interview for Lecom Erie. I am a bit concerned as it is late in the game and many of you have mentioned some of the pathways are closing up. I would love it if admissions would just tell me if I'm interviewing for a waitlist or not.. What are your thoughts?

I guess I should clarify what I meant. Yes they are a little bit more expensive but they look very nice and are very close to campus. I looked at a couple other properties with a washer/dryer in unit and they are a couple hundred more a month. $650 for a 2 bedroom apt isn't that much more than I pay right now for the house I live in. The apartments in my area of similar stature are around $600 a month. Also for me, if I live within walking distance then I don't need a garage. But if I have to drive to class then I want a garage so cost really isn't that different for the convenience of the location.

For anyone who has received the matriculation packet, it says all of the forms must be completed by March 30th. Do they need to be sent to LECOM before then or just mailed by then? I am done with everything but the second step of the PPD test which I am getting next week. Will there be a problem if I send it next Friday in the mail?

I can't imagine it MUST be due by the 30th, aside from there being people who haven't heard anything yet, sometimes these processes are slow. They've gotta just put that date to get people to get **** in on time, right?

BElieve me I still don't have everything done. That criminal background check alone takes forever.

Ok I see theres an extra note on the checklist that says "All above mentione dforms MUST be completed by MArch 30, 2009" under the history/physical/immunization form. I can get the hietory/physical, just not sure about the immunization.

**** I didn't even realize this was all due so soon, I've been spending all my time getting the financial aid **** done and looking for an apartment.

I just got mine the beginning of this week and its due APRIL 30 ... not March. That would be insane!

I believe as long as your testing is done by the time you start school (or even if you started) it will be ok. I had some friends this year who still had to get their 2/3rd shot while in school.

Just make sure you begin all your tests so that you don't have to worry about it later.

Thats good to know.

The health forms say you need to have an alcohol test performed, through urine, blood, or breathalyzer. Are they trying to make sure you're not showing up to the doctor's office hammered? What else would this test prove?

Well, if you drove yourself to the doctor's office and the test was negative, then you weren't drinking and driving. That's another thing that it would prove. Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Funny guy.

Applicants must meet the following specific course requirements:

  • Biology: A minimum of eight semester hours, including two semester hours of laboratory work. These eight hours may consist of general biology or zoology, or a combination of biology, zoology and botany.
I just got that from LECOMs website. ONLY TWO HOURS OF BIOLOGY LAB? Last semester I completed 3 credits lecture, 2 credits lab. This semester I am taking 3 credits lecture, 2 credits lab. I DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THIS HORRIBLE INTRO BIOLOGY LAB RIGHT NOW? I CAN DROP IT?!?!

Oh and how long do you have to wait after a vaccination to get the titer?

I'm looking at those two, as well as Grenada Apartments, Westgate Apartments, and Shadow Pines. I'm not really sure what's more important to me, proximity, cost, or amenities. That's why I haven't narrowed it down to fewer than these. I'd like to know if anyone has lived at any of these places and would recommend them or not.

Stay away from Grenada they were shady when I went to look at them last year. I currently live in Lanmark Square about 10 min from campus and about 5 min from the bars... you do the math ;-)

I like your thinking. Where are the bars located, so when I look at apartments I know how far they are from the bars too?
