LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I like your thinking. Where are the bars located, so when I look at apartments I know how far they are from the bars too?

Most of the bars are in downtown Erie (Peach/State & 8-12th st). Erie is pretty easy to drive around and everything is within 10 minutes. Most of my friends live right by LECOM (Maleno / Pastore Developments), with a few closer to downtown.

Are there certain developers to stay away from? I want to be within 10 minutes of campus but spend less than $500 a month including utilities. It looks like the closer I live to campus, the more expensive the apartment. What are the roads like when it snows? Does Erie suck at plowing side roads? I have a front wheel drive 5 speed coupe and have a hell of a time going up hills in the snow.

Oh and how long do you have to wait after a vaccination to get the titer?

If I remember correctly from immunology, it takes about 2-3 weeks to build up a secondary response after the initial vaccination. I could be wrong though and it probably depends on the vaccine. Some vaccines have multiple shots.

This is why I love Shadow Pines. I called them and was placed on the waiting list for both a 1 BR and 2 BR. So if anyone is interested and I get offered the 2 BR spot, I'll have an extra BR to for a roommate. I just hope it doesn't take too long to find out if I am lucky enough to get one or not.

sorry. I don't actually know about shadow pines? Might be one of the newer ones near the school. I am not too familir with those. sorry.

Of course I like being the funny guy because that's my personality. BUT, BUT, BUT, if the location of the bars is key to your choice of housing at this stage of your life, then maybe you should re-think what you are expecting medical school to be like. Man, you better save those brains cells unless you are Einstein - which I am not. So forget about waltzing into LECOM like some "bon vivant." Your B#TT will be out of here before Christmas.

Is it starting to warm up out there in Erie yet? I was debating bringing my car but I've since decided against it since it woudl be useless in the winter (rwd). Now I'm thinking of bringing my motorcycle and I'm wondering when it starts warming up out there to about like 50 degree highs...if its that warm i can ride the .5 miles to school...anyone else ride motorcycles out there?

Hey! I have my interview at LECOM-Erie on Tuesday. I already got accepted at ATSU-SOMA. Would I simply be interviewing for the waiting list at this point?

Motorcycles are not a realistic option (even for 0.5miles) November through March in Erie. The rest of the year it is above 50 degrees most of the time. Although, we are used to a snowy day here and there through April.

Hey guys.

Hope everyone is doing well. Anyways, I recently interviewed at LECOM last Friday on the 20th. I just checked my portal and under the admissions tab, there is now a Seton Hill option... Anyone else see this on their portal after the interview? I'm SOOOOO nervous. I listed Seton Hill as my top choice too. Oh man.... = /

For those that got wait listed, did you receive a letter that you had to respond to or was it just a letter informing you that you were wait listed and no more action is necessary unless they pull you from the list?

Thanks.

So i'm sure this question has been answered before, but does everyone that interviews here get put on the wait list? or are there actualy rejections? I interviewed about 3 weeks ago and am now on the wait list and am trying to gage what my chances are. Thanks!

Sorta like what I deal with in jersey then. lol.

not to get your hopes up- but when i interviewed back in December, shortly after the Seton Hill option popped up (i listed it as second choice) and i was accepted there and to Erie Lecture shortly there after... id say its a good sign

Good luck on Tuesday!
I hope not - My interview is on April 7th. I have heard from people who were in the last round of interviews and were accepted(not from the waitlist) last year.

They send you a letter that you have to return. It basically asks if you want to accept the waitlist position or not.

If any of you are considering going into ISP... don't it is the worst pathway. Either stay in LDP or PBL but don't be seduced by the ISP lifestyle. it's not easy... I wish I was in LDP

wow......first I heard that. everyone has raved about it. my neihbor in an ER r2 and said when she went to LECOM it was great.

can you elaborate any?

Quickly... the way the program is run, they say they are trying to improve it for next year but who knows.

When we get exams most of the questions are from the LDP presentations or stuff said in class so on our Pharm. II exam 9 questions were thrown out of a total of 55 questions.. 16% or so

They give us a list of objectives and sometimes are vague like describe the histology of the eye... how much depth do you want us to go into? Who knows. Its difficult to request a meeting with the faculty since they seem like they don't want to be bothered. When clinicians come in to lecture to LDP thats fine and they might hint at what is important on the exam but for the clinician to come back out and only speak with the 30 of us the school isn't going to pay the clinician for that hour or so when its about 10% of the class.

Don't get me wrong I like the lifestyle and the course work but all semester long its like we in ISP are fighting an uphill battle with weights tied to our legs. and about 50% of us are considering switching back to LDP because of the stress imposed on us.

I'm a non-traditional student and will be moving to Erie with my two school-age children. Does anyone have any suggestions on housing for a family? Any information about the elementary schools? Etc., etc.

Thanks, see you all soon!!

So I'm thinking of purchasing an MSI wind or ASUS 1000HE as my lecture laptop. I would have my main desktop at home. My only concern is that these PCs do not have cd drives on them...is that an issue? They list it as a "requirement" on the lecom tech section but you can get an external for a few bucks these days. Does anyone use 10" netbooks in lecture now?

Use any computer you would like. We have people with 10" to 17", PC and Mac. As for having a CD drive..never had to use it for anything school related. Some of the review/text books you buy come with CDs for getting images (that are from the book), but that's about it.

Do people actually use laptops in lecture? I don't see why it would be helpful to have the powerpoint in front of you when its being displayed on a projector anyway. I like having printouts of the lectures to write quick notes, at least for now, will that change in med school?

As an aside, do you have the ability to print from "public" LECOM computers, or do you end up doing all your printing from your personal computer? I like being able to print a few hundred pages per week at my undergrad. If I can't do that at LECOM I might wanna pick myself up a small laser printer.

I am starting school in July as well. I have lived in Erie most of my life. LECOM is technically in the City of Erie, but the biggest township, Millcreek Township is right across the street.

So, for school aged children I would recommend Millcreek Township School Dsitrict. My wife is a teacher in the Erie School District. Many places to live right near campus (within 10 minutes max) and great school.

Are you looking to buy a house or rent a house or rent an apartment / townshouse?

Feel free to PM me if you want any specifics.

Hi Slevin, thanks for your honesty. I am strongly considering ISP. Can you tell me are ISP students frequently in lecture? It is my understanding that ISP are permitted to attend any lecture they want. Also, what is your background/typical background of ISP students? And finally, it seems like in your previous posts (Feb) you were pumped about ISP and now you hate it. Are different classes more difficult or what happened, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks a million, and have a good one.

ISP students aren't frequently in lecture as prior to neuroanatomy beginning the classes didn't overlap very well and that made it hard to correlate what was going on in ISP to what they were don't in lecture. Classes aren't more difficult but depending on the way objectives are put together for the class and how detailed the objective are will impact how frustrated you get with the module. Also the way the exams and class are run compared to LDP are different. I find it hard to believe that in ISP where we had 30% fail physio and at least 10% fail biochem that we were given the same opportunities as LDP when no one in LDP failed either course according to the LDP pathway director. There should be aprox the same averages but there isn't. I have a friend (wish I took his advice) who switched from ISP to LDP after the first semester and he says that currently he is doing much better in LDP than he ever was in ISP. States that after class is done for the day he hardly studies at home (that may correspond to 3-4 hours/day) although there are some LDP students who are on campus from 7 am -11pm.

I'll repost what I put up in a different thread
Current ISPer wish I had gone back to LDP when I had the chance. Probably going back next year after having to remediate a course which if I was in LDP I wouldn't have to.

This year our Micro/Immuno was split up but for LDP it wasn't meaning that if you you were in LDP and you did poorly in one exam but did really well on the second enough to bring that 60 to a 70 then you passed the class. But for ISP if you failed one exam with a 69% and passed the other with even a 72% you would still need to remediate that class. Same thing happened with Pharm. I and Pharm. II

Some of the professors are getting lazy and not reviewing the course packets for the classes and as such there was one exam where 16% of the questions had to be thrown out since they weren't covered in the packet for ISP but they were mentioned in LDP.

Allot of the objectives are really vague like describe the histology of the eye and they'll give you a range of pages 400-425. Where as in LDP they tell you specifically what you need to cover, so as an ISP student you'll spend 2 hours trying to pull out what is important from that lecture where as LDP will have it handed to them on a silver platter.

This semester we had one less week than LDP to cover both musculoskeletal system and neuroanatomy and on top of that we had a neuroanatomy quiz the day after our MSK system ended before anyone even opened their neuroanatomy packet.

We in ISP aren't asking for things to be easy but rather to be fair. So far this semester we have had our MSK final and OPP exam on the same day, LDP only had the OPP exam. We also have an H&P and Neuroanatomy exam on the same day, LDP does not. The student's in PCSP voted to divide their MSK system exam into 3 parts where we only had one exam to cover roughly 400+ pages but yet they have the same exact objectives as we do.

When ISP started I thought it was the best pathway ever, get up when I want, study when I want and take the exam. Now I hate it and I know of at least 7 out of 28 people who are strongly considering it because it's just too stressful. I know some people like ISP because they have their families here and that allows them to spend more time with them and a few others who like ISP just because it suits them, but ISP isn't for everyone. It sounds appealing and sexy but as of right now its more like here is a book teach yourself what you need to know and good luck on the exam.

If you can do it kudos to you but I'll advise any who want to go into ISP to STRONGLY reconsider it. Personally I think it has been my worst decision over the last two years. The incoming director of ISP says it will get better in the future but that depends on the cooperation of professors many of whom aren't willing to go out of their way to help about 10% of the class.

Don't get me wrong LECOM is a good school but the organization of the ISP pathway needs work.

I mean if you think it'll suit you fine go for it. But as for me and about 30% of us at least are strongly considering going back to LDP in the fall because for us it isn't the best fit. I really want to stay in ISP I like the lifestyle but not at the cost of my education.

Any more questions just ask.

So has the match list come out for LECOM? I am just curious to see how everyone fared.

Slevin, thank you for your honest review of ISP.
I have an interview coming up and LECOM is my top choice school. I would really like to be on the Erie campus, in PBL, however I keep reading LDP and PBL are "full". Should I rank Erie PBL as my number one choice and risk getting waitlisted or rank Erie ISP number one for my best chance to remain at Erie? I think I would do okay in ISP, however I would prefer the extra support of the PBL program. What do people think? I am not opposed to going to Seton Hill for PBL, but I like the idea of being close to the cadaver lab if needed and really wanted to participate in Erie's community service opportunities. Thanks for your opinions.

If I were in your sitution I would put down ISP as my 1st choice and then ask around me or other people who are in ISP when you start next year about the program. When the core of anatomy is coming to an end you can always request to go back to LDP and there will be many LDPers willing to trade. But it is much harder to get into ISP than LDP since there are very few seats.

if u dont mind me asking....was it good news?..erie my top choice...

how's the roomate "match" list coming along? Has anyone received it in the mail yet?

Also, I am afraid to miss something, but do you guys know if there is a second payment coming up sometime soon? I thought it was in march, for some reason, but couldn't find any info on that, really.

Thanks

Thank you for the information. I will be looking to rent a house/apartment/townhouse. Buying isn't an option at this time - banks like to see more than just student loans as income (especially in this economy) and as a single parent - we'll be living off loans mostly. If you have any suggestions on places to avoid, I would really appreciate that.

Thanks!! (See you in July)

I am giving up my seat Erie LDP. SO this should open up a spot for someone who is really interested in LECOM. I found that I would be more comfortable at KCUMB. I am glad that I had several options to chose from and I hope this seat goes to another SDNer. All the best.

BAH got my titers back and apparently I don't have a high enough antibody concentration for Hep B, so now I gotta get the vaccinations all over again. Sucks.

What do I do about the immunization/health forms? Should I send them as they are, with the doctor's note that I need the Hep B vaccinations?

Dude, this is medical school. Your test results are what they are. So report them as they are. But, before you go back for another round of Hep B, how about some PBL? I assume that you had the recombinant version of Hep B so what does your doctor think? Your ole bod didn't recognize or respond sufficiently to the first round. Will another series do the trick or do you have to find another option if there is another option? I don't know the answer.

Same problem. Just going to repeat the series and then get the test again. I'll probably call student affairs to make sure that is okay and at what point they would like me to send the immu forms in (after first or second shot. the third is like 5 months after the second). I'm sure its not the first time it's happened. But yeah, that's my case, definitely consult your physician about what you should do.

Yeah I'm going to get revaccinated. The doctor said that some people are just resistant to the vaccine, but some respond to getting another round of it. My question wasn't what to do about negative titers, my question was what to do about the health/immunization forms.

I will try calling tomorrow but nobody at LECOM seems to ever answer/respond to phone calls/messages (aside from the woman at the front desk)

From Johnbob5585 the comedian.

Report your situation to anyone who will listen including the janitor or the gardener. Recombinant Hep B vaccine not working - what to do?

I found this hot chick in the computer lab and asked her what I should do. Turns out that danger turns her on, and when I told her my Hep B IgG was low she dragged me into the bathroom and...

Are you a dancing yellow banana because she gave you hepatitis? Just wondering.

FWIW, we Bradenton folks have to go through the same tests. One first-year I've talked to told me he's almost done with his HepB vacc series, so there are others in the same situation, at least in Florida. And people who don't work in health care might never have had the vaccination in the first place.

I don't think it's that unusual for the titer to be negative after a series. I know my hospital has people get a titer at the end of their Hep B series to make sure they're immune, and this seems to be the usual practice for health care workers: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/508173

Ha ha ha!!!!! I love it!

I received an invitation to interview today. Do you think they are just trying to fill out the waitlist, or do I still have a slim chance

My last Hep B shot won't be until July - so,I won't be able to have the titers done until after classes start. When I called LECOM to check if that was ok,I was advised that would be fine and just to get all the information in as soon as possible.

You have a chance, they wouldn't still be interviewing if you didn't... in a few months say around June if you got placed on the waitlist I would put in a strong letter of interest.
