Hey ya'll,

I've been accepted to a few medical schools now across the nation, and I am trying to categorize them and eliminate a few of my choices.

For the Midwest: Mayo Clinic vs. UW Madison

Any ppl who know these schools care to talk about the pros and cons of each? Experiences? Residencies? Reputation? Anything? (I'm from Cali...so I don't know much about the Midwest schools...)

u aware of mayo clinic's curriculum? muchhhh diff than the other medical schools in terms of vacations etc..

Thanks for the response!

Yes I am ... but I don't think I would factor that in where I go to medical school (nor will I forgo Madison just because of the public health classes)

I was wondering more in terms of atmosphere for students? Reputation? Competitive Residency Matching? How easy it is to get to know docs for LORs?
stuff like that

PS
I'll be totally honest...i kinda spaced through my interview days in the Midwest (apart from MCW where Jennifer was amazing)...Interviews get tiring after a while (same old, same old)

Don't underestimate the value of the selectives. I'm about to take 2 weeks off. again.

Both schools have excellent reputations, great opportunities for both research and clinical experiences, and terrible weather. Mayo probably rings a few more bells among the general public, but within the medical field, UW Madison is a very highly regarded institution. In terms of your career, you can't go wrong with either school.

The obvious factors to help you make your decision are money and quality of life. I can't speak much to Rochester, but Madison is a very active city with quite a bit to do in terms of recreation, food, culture, and nightlife. It's a fun, safe, and affordable place to live (especially for young people) whether you are into sports, politics, the arts, or all of the above. The only downside is a noticeable lack of racial and ethnic diversity (although, perhaps not quite as severe as in Rochester).

All that said, it sounds like you might not be that into the idea of going to school in the Midwest, period. And that's totally cool. You're clearly a top-notch applicant, and I'm sure you have some great choices before you. My personal vote: Madison. Not only is UW an excellent school in a wonderful city, but if you do come to Madison, you'll have the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet me. And I'm f***ing cool.

@BarneyisBaloney, these are great schools, congratulations. I have to note, though, that a month ago you wrote this on the Mayo thread:
I'm gonna drop off the accepted list here (SF weather vs Rochester...wasn't really a hard decision)

1) How do medical schools enforce that you only are accepted 1 place by April 30th? (curious)
2) Do I just call them and say I don't want to come here?
3) What if I get accepted of the waitlist from another place while I hold my one acceptance, and give my word to those folks that I will matriculate there at SF?
Are you really considering Mayo? Or Madison, which has a similar winter?

Thanks for stalking...but I talked to a few doctor friends here

I'm interested in RadOnc...and they said I was insane if I dropped from Mayo (Or Madison) this early

I agree, UW is where it's at. Mayo is a great institution and so is their medical school. But UW is also an excellent school, and speaking as a former resident, you absolutely cannot beat Madison in terms of quality of life. It is an amazing place. I would have gone to UW in a heartbeat, but alas, it was not in the cards for me. Even though you'd be turning down the Mayo name, I really do think you'll be gaining a lot by going to UW. If you have any questions about Madison in general, especially if you need bar/restaurant suggestions, do not hesitate to reach out!

@OP, if I may ask, what other schools are you considering? I'm also from CA, and have been accepted at UW and Mayo, and am agonizing over my decision. I was also accepted at a CA school, which is close to family and friends. So I'm following this thread now with interest. 🙂

As someone who has lived in both locations (UW for undergrad; Mayo for med school), I'll comment. JPA makes some solid points regarding Madison in terms of lifestyle. It beats Rochester hands-down there. But Mayo beats UW handsdown in everything related to medicine. It really depends on what you're looking for. I have been very happy in Rochester and I'm single as well - yes the dating and nightlife scenes are nothing like Madison is, but there are plenty of bars and restaurants downtown to enjoy a night out. Particularly if you are not single, this is less of an issue for Rochester.

Don't underestimate the power of training at Mayo in terms of propelling your career. Yes, Wisco is a solid name in the Midwest, but Mayo is among the best INTERNATIONALLY. Coming from Mayo puts you in the league of Harvard, Stanford, UCSF, etc when it comes time to apply for residency. As someone who was a "state school" person at Madison before med school, this was a really powerful change when it came time to apply and interview for residency. If you are a person for evidence - 75% of my class matched to their #1 choice program this year, and 98% in their top 3. Aside from the name, the curriculum here is amazing and innovative. The selectives in the first two years allow you to explore career interests early and start building clinical skills long before you hit the wards as a 3rd year. THey are also a powerful opportunity for doing research and international work that are great ways to broaden yourself (not to mention the CV perks and interview topics that come from those). You will be learning from world-class faculty during your basic science and clerkships, as well.

I hope these few points are helpful in your decision. I think if you are considering RadOnc, this decision should be a no-brainer for Mayo because of the competitiveness of the specialty.

In my current order:

1) UCSF 2A) Mayo 2B) Madison 3) Miami ($$$ offered) 4) A few others...including a top 10 school whose interviewer was incredibly mean about my religion, but somehow I got accepted

In all honesty...UCSF ranks pretty high above the rest (but Mayo is becoming increasingly alluring for some reason..idk)

Anyways...I wanna keep this thread focused on Mayo vs Wisconsin (not my life)

I could give you a hug right now...u rule!

Keep the responses coming...I love you guys

Is your Mayo tuition low? I've heard that they give out a lot of money for tuition?

Kids with rich parents get less; kids with poor parents get more...its more need based than ever (which doesn't help me)

Oh, I see. I thought (could very well be wrong ) that in some past years, it used to be like everyone got half-off tuition.
