Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I met with an advisor a month ago, and she told me that they take into consideration the way you talk on the phone with their ppl into consideration when reviewing applications

Yikes.

If I had a completely complete, lol, application I'd call. I sound like a 12-year-old on the phone and I can't even be mean to my kids or kill the spiders in my house so I think that they wouldn't feel threatened, lol.

They probably shuffle your file to the bottom of the pile every time you call. 😛

Agreed!

You guys have great stats so maybe they are skipping this week or have a late start on the day?

I'm ok with that for today as I'm currently between phones so would have no way of knowing and I don't have a voicemail either. Does anyone know if they send an email or letter as well? Do they HAVE to speak with you to accept?

I know that there is one DO school that if you don't answer the phone, they'll just move on to the next person. 😱 I don't own a cell phone, so I wouldn't be able to leave the house if that were the case.

It sounds like they do let you know in other forms after the phone call.

Agree with everyone! Looked forward to Thursday all week and no such luck! I'm gonna go insane by the time this cycle is over lol

+1
refreshing emails became my addiction and sdn became my new social network website

looks like they are not meeting today

I find this all kind of fun since I would usually describe myself as a patient person...but not when it comes to this. Must persevere. 😳

👍 I'm developing bad habits haha

I now get anxious everytime my phone vibrates..

Agreed. Called again and got a busy signal.

See you guys next Thursday... haha

Yep! Have a great week guys! 🙂

yup see you all next week....pretty slow process so far, hopefully there is some movement next week!

Does anybody know where I can find the MSUCOM secondary application prompts? I've heard this thing is a monster and I'm just a bit curious. I thought I read somewhere that people have posted them online but can't seem to find it.

Thanks

Not a monster. Look earlier in this thread, it's somewhere, only 3 questions

Yeah, I didn't think that it was too terrible *says the girl who will be rejected now that she said this, lol.

I PM'd the questions. 🙂

This sounds outrageous. It's hard to believe that they ignore or reject you for that.

If you applied to TOURO NY, I would not chance it. Check out the 2012 thread. I think that it is a sucky deal.

That is an extremely sucky deal, my phone is on silent 95% of the time and I don't use vibrate either...guess I better turn my ringer on for the next 7 or so months.

I don't think MSU passes people up if you don't pick up the phone, but I'd just be careful with other schools especially if they have a "snooze you loose policy" in the recent admission cycles. I just think that it is unreasonable since we are active people who cannot have their phone go off in certain places (school and work).

It'd be really funny to have a specific ring tone song go off when a school called. Something like "Started from the bottem now we're here" or something.

When MSU called me, it went to voicemail. They didn't leave a message. An hour later I called back and said I'd missed a call from that number. They asked my name and then told me I was accepted to MSU COM. I'm sure I would've still been accepted if I hadn't called back, but I thought it odd they didn't leave a message. I didn't receive an email or any other notification til more than a week after the phone call.

I think I am going to do that for all numbers that aren't stored in my phone...I wonder if the iOS7 can do that haha

Sigh seems that way doesn't it? Or else none of the people they admitted today post on SDN?

Hey all, I was just admitted to MSUCOM this past Thursday!! But I also have some MD interviews that I have coming up, and I looked all over the place on their website and couldn't find anything so I'll try asking on here. I have my number 1 MD school interview this week and I would like to go there if accepted, but the way MSU made it sound on the phone was that I couldn't withdraw if I chose to accept their offer. Anyone know anything about this? I would love to go to MSUCOM and have nothing against them, I just don't want them to take away my offer while I wait to see what happens with the other MD schools I applied to. I just want to keep all of my options open 🙂

never mind I found it haha. Good luck to the rest of you!

Just curious, what was the answer (and where did you find it)? This is important for a lot of people who will be getting multiple acceptances.

Was waiting on DO letter before I applied, but apparently I didn't need it....

3.4cGPA, 3.2sGPA, 28 MCAT, 700 hours of volunteering, shadowing, tons of research

but I just submitted my application through AMCAS.

Am i too late for MSUCOM? 🙁

Are you IS? They have a strong in-state preference so being IS might help. I submitted my secondary after the recommended date as well and I'm OOS. I think it doesn't hurt to try.

My phone doesn't always register that I got a missed call if I don't have a good signal when I get it... I swear, if I'm in lecture and my phone doesn't say I got a call when I did and I don't get accepted because of it... I will flip out.:scared:

Congratulations on getting accepted to MSUCOM and on your MD interviews coming up. I hope that you get into the school that you desire most. 🙂

Think on the bright side, you wouldn't know! 😀

canadian, but did undergrad in states. played D1 soccer. cGPA 3.77 sGPA 3.65 MCAT 26 (8,8,10). only 300 hrs volunteering w very minimal research. shadowed a DO multiple times. tutored senior year. finished secondary mid august.

this is the only school i applied to. what are my chances?

I expect you're joking or don't actually want to go to med school next year, since your solid GPA is the only thing that stands out. You may have an okay chance, but I wouldn't bank on it.

I don't mean to be harsh; it's just an unrealistic situation you describe (and bizarre you would only apply to one school).

I don't think your chances are that great...especially since you only have 300 hrs of volunteering..and MSUCOM has a pretty strong in-state preference. If you want to attend medical school next fall I would suggest you apply to more DO schools otherwise I hope you are planning to retake the MCAT.

yeah i figured. and no im not joking. i only applied to one because msu was the only one i had finished before getting my mcat back. once i got my mcat since it was so bad i figured it wasnt worth spending money elsewhere. i just didnt know if the fact that i had about 25hrs/week commitments with soccer whether that may balance out my volunteer hours. theres always next year.

You have up until December 1 to make your decision and submit your deposit for them. I found all the information on their portal where you fill out the secondary application, there is an admissions offer tab where you will have to go and electronically sign your name, saying you will be attending, say which campus you prefer, etc etc.

I don't think your MCAT is that bad for DO schools (especially with your good GPA). I would expect, if you applied more broadly, you would have a pretty good chance. I'm not sure about whether or not it's "too" late in this application cycle to add more. Maybe someone else can chime in?

But yes -- from my experience, if you can improve your MCAT to 30+ and apply earlier and more broadly, you'd be quite competitive for almost any DO school and many MD schools (assuming your AMCAS GPA is similar to the one you listed).

How about if you pay and then change your mind? You just don't get the deposit back, right?

I wouldn't knock you as hard as everyone else is. Alright, 300 hrs isn't great, but D1 is a huge accomplishment and shows major commitment. And schools love athletics; it shows you have outside interests.
Also remember that MSUCOM has an agreement with Canada, where they reserve a certain amount of seats for Canadians, and from my experience, very few Canadians are aware of osteopathic medicine. If you're applying as a Canadian, I think you'd have a better shot than you think.

I have been seeing in a lot of these posts that MSU COM is very interested in volunteer hours. I do have volunteering experience at a hospice house and other various things here and there including a medical mission trip. However, I don't have the 2000 hours everyone else is saying they have had. I do have well over 3000 hours of paid clinical experience however. Does this weigh in the same as the volunteer? Or am I SOL because of my smaller amount of volunteer hours?

You're fine without having an insanely high amount of volunteer hours. I was accepted here and had less that 1000 including high school hours.

well thanks i appreciate that. i mean i have over 1000 hours working as a receptionist in a doctors office, plus like over 2000 for soccer so its not like i've been doing nothing, just not a ton of volunteer work.

I was complete at MSUCOM in late September, do you guys think this is too late? I'm a little anxious because on MSU's website, it says they recommend everyone apply by Sept 1st. I'm not sure if these means the primary or secondary? Any insight would be grateful!
