Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well they give out 320 (or whatever # they pick) acceptances, then people either accept or withdraw. They are given out until the class is filled. That's why people have only 2 weeks to accept admissions after Dec 1st.

interesting...cause for WesternU they give out a total of 400 acceptances for 200 seats.

We use rolling admissions. I don't really understand WesternU then? So 400 acceptances are given and if more then 200 people say yes, you can still be denied? That would mean getting accepted wouldn't be a sure thing, that would suck lol.

Most schools have a yield well below 50% and accept > 2-3x class size. Whether that's in big chunks or on a rolling basis depends on the school. While it's possible that more than half will say yes in the case of WesternU... it's statistically improbable. I don't think they can rescind acceptances. I've heard (colloquially, mind you) that this "overfilling" has happened once or twice before. I believe they do things like offer a free year of tuition of you decide to defer for a year.

That was kind of a depressing email... I worry that perhaps my application won't even be looked at. 2000 applicants is a huge number

I actually thought 2000 is a pretty small number, at the school I just visited they said they had 6000 applications so far

Beat me to it! Better written answer also.
Haha, except my claim of free tuition might be a little off the mark, so you beat me there 😉 (I think I'm conflating overbooking classes with things like the UCF free tuition for their inaugural class). After doing a little searching, I can only really find mention of rather minimal scholarships.

The dean said at the open house people who completed in July should have received an acceptance by September-October if they were going to be admitted. :0

You may have just crushed hundreds of peoples' dreams.

Yeah, really!!!
I wonder if that includes people who were "complete" in July with everything x MCAT however got their initial MCAT scores from September 2013 in October like I did?

Doesn't sound right...the email stated they have only offered 204 acceptances so far for ~315 seats; that means they have to accept at least 150 more and place others on the waiting list.

The dean was responding to a question by a student and he talked about how they review apps; They do rank them and people with highest stats get priority, but then he continued saying that order of completion is also important - I distinctly remember him saying that people who were 100% complete in July and worthy of being admitted would have been admitted by September-October.

I'm one of the people who may have crushed dreams. I hope that the dean misspoke here and that it's not really true.

This is rough. 🙁

Congrats Jayb82388! I have similar stats but with an MA degree soon. Gives me a little bit of hope. 🙂

No luck for me today. This was, in my mind, the official day where I would really need to start preparation for the MCAT if I was going to retake which is the biggest weakness of my app so if I want to do better next year, this will be my chance.

remain hopefull,
the mcat was by far the weakest part of my application. but i emailed them a few times to check in and what not and just had really good everything else...still a longggggggg way to go before they fill the class, a really long ways.

Congratulations. Would you mind sharing whether (with your MS) your cumulative GPA was higher or lower or average than the email they sent? And by below average mcat, would 26 fall into that category bc that's what I have :\!

I thought that they usually have classes full in December which is feeling really close?

I don't want to throw next year's chances away if I don't improve on the one thing that might set me back. Every year, admissions seem to get tougher and tougher. I just applied to Erie's post bacc also for next year. 🙂

i was below all of the averages listed in the email. so i did the MS degree through MSUCOM in pharmacology, had a 3.7. took the mcat, got rocked (26) but had a million jobs in a hospital and like 2000 volunteer hours (including published research). complete end of july.

AHA! Complete end of July, accepted mid November. That's wonderful news for those of us still feeling hopeful despite what the dean said about July-ers only being accepted September-October. Thank you 🙂

Got the call!
IS, 3.7, 26
For what its worth, my secondary was received 7/17, but my letters weren't in until early September.

Just got off the phone with the admissions office. I obviously knew I wasn't getting in with my MCAT score; but we went over my application and was given tips for next cycle.

Well...it's been fun guys, hope to see you at the open house(s) next year.
Until then, stay gold.

Bang.

Did you call to inquire about your status and they straight up told you that you didnt get in? What where your stats if you don't mind?

I emailed admissions and all they said to me was when a decision is made you will be notified immediately. How did you get them to tell you you weren't accepted?

Click on the MDApps number, under my name....

I was at the "See the Sites" event last Friday and talked with the admissions team. We discussed my situation and they told me to email them and set up a phone interview for application review. They said usually they are pretty full, but because they met me in person and such, they'd squeeze me in. So I made sure I emailed them ASAP, and they were very nice and helped me out.

I wish you the best for next year and for this year for other schools if you are taking the January MCAT. Study hard. You can rock it! 🙂

Sigh, MSUCOM is like your significant other who's giving you the silent treatment. You know you did something wrong, but s/he won't tell you what, and you're afraid to bug him/her too much fearing it'll only make things worse.

can anyone PM me the secondary link for MSU COM. I deleted it months ago, but just curious to see my status after reading these posts. Thanks!

I'm a late applicant and I just wanted to know if you guys have any advice on letters of reccomendation. Since MSUCOM only accepts two, i'm not sure which letters to use. Should they both be from science professors? Or would it be okay to have one from a non-science professor or someone from a place I volunteer?

Thanks I actually found it in an old email. It doesn't tell me anything..but the website says they pretty much fill their class by December.... and...... December is 2 weeks away. I can pretty much assume I'm rejected. But that's okay, because no way was I paying $80k/year as OOS

I hear you. It's a lot of money OOS. Good luck either way!!!! 🙂

They fill their class by December and its two weeks away. That is just the scariest thing in the world.

Considering they only have just over a third confirmed deposits, and earlier in this thread it says that the class size is around 300, I would find it hard to believe they are going to have it filled in 2 weeks, but that might just be optimistic thinking.

I hope they won't be done accepting people in the next two weeks. Kind of sucks since my stats are pretty much exactly what the average for the class has been.

I think a lot of you are ignoring the potentially large number of people to be taken from the wait list. Especially as people who paid deposits early here get acceptances at schools that aren't moving so quickly. Being accepted and paying a deposit only means the seat is taken until the applicant gets an offer from somewhere they would rather go to school. I must say, I haven't looked at this school's wait list movement from last year, but a few other schools I've applied to that are also very desirable schools moved through 60-95 wait listed applicants last year.

So I just went and looked at last year's thread and the last acceptance posted was May 25th.

Maybe, we will be surprised? I've seen stats similar to mine accepted. Two more weeks at least left...then we will be praying for a WL spot perhaps? MSU, I love you so much. Take us SDNers, please. 🙂
