Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
they said that they would likely send out a packet via snail mail friday or monday and we should be getting an email within the next week. She said that if we don't get it by next Thursday we shouldn't worry because they are dealing with a new system and they have been having problems.
Have you received anything in the mail yet? I was accepted the end of september and have yet to get anything from them in the mail

Hey Everyone, anxiously waiting and reading this forum every Thursday/Friday!

Anyway, I am Canadian and applied to MSU for this year. From those that have received the golden phone call, the majority seem to be IS and OOS from what I see.

Have there been any Canadians that have been accepted so far? Or are we late to hear anything? Good luck to all. 👍

There was an accepted canadian a few posts ago.

Fellow Canadian here; I haven't heard anything either, though I was only complete last week. The only Canadian we've heard that has been accepted so far was a reapplicant from last year. Good luck, fellow countryman/woman! :luck:

So in the secondary app it says: Volunteer work is anything you have done for which you haven’t been paid from which an individual, group or organization benefited. Record experiences chronologically beginning with your high school years.

Does unpaid clinical internship count as a volunteer experience?

I would say no. Sorry. 😳

Did you receive school credit for your internship?

Thanks Fuzzy! I saw that re-applicant post a few days back. Interesting because according to last year's thread so many CANs received the call in September. Well, one week at a time I guess - see you next Thursday!

I think it's because this is the first year they're not doing any screening, so I can imagine the volume of applications that they have to go through is at least doubled.

That would be intense!
I thought schools usually rejects about 20% for secondary screening.

I'm IS and wanting to apply here next year. Anybody know if MSUCOM offers scholarships or financial aid help? What is the typical IS debt?

I was at a volunteer event last spring with one of the admissions counselors and she had mentioned they had ~6000 apps last year. It's been awhile so that number could be slightly off. It was still quite a large number though because I remember being blown away at the time.

That sounds on par with some of the figures I've heard. Most schools get ~5k applications, ~2500 gets a secondary from those that do screening. 300 gets interviewed, and 150 receive acceptances. This gives a total of 2-3% acceptance rate across the board. It's frightening to say the least :scared:

Thought I would pipe in after receiving this interesting email to all other curious non-posters that may be out there... looks like they're averaging MCATs:

Greetings Applicants,

We thought you may be interested in an update to our admissions process, thus far. We plan to notify you monthly in order to provide you with as much information as possible, throughout your application experience. We began our selection process in September and will continue until mid-Spring.

All AACOMAS Applicants: 3561
Applications Completed: 1646
Offered Admission: 118
Seat Deposit Paid: 53

Academic averages of incoming class, as of 10/14/13
All MCAT's taken (includes repeated MCATs): 28.47
Highest MCAT of those taken (includes repeated MCATs): 30.66
Average Science GPA: 3.76

Our incoming class averages tend to reflect a 3.6 Science GPA and 28 MCAT. Subjective factors of the application such as extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, letters of recommendation, osteopathic interest, and personal statements are not quantifiable and therefore we are unable to provide data on these highly valued application entities.

The Admissions Committee meets weekly and has been reviewing 25 applicants on average. Applicants are selected for Admissions Committee review based on several criteria including a combination of academic accomplishments, extracurricular experiences, timing of application completion, etc. Admissions notifications will typically occur until mid-Spring. Students who are selected for the waiting list could be notified at any time between September and one week before orientation. Students who are not selected for the class may be notified at any time throughout the admissions cycle. Please be sure to check your online application status to be sure your file is complete as your application will be ineligible for review until you have complete status.

Best wishes to you all,

Thanks so much for sharing, as I have not gotten that email. Hope that's not a bad sign 🙁

Got this email too.

Looks like MCAT and sGPA are what they look for first then volunteer hours. Very high sGPA....

Did everyone else get today's e-mail too? I submitted a long time ago. The portal says that my application is complete. I am OOS though...

I got the email too. I was complete August 21. Sigh....
This email just got me more anxious.... There are a few who were accepted with lower MCAT scores than 28 in the past few weeks.

Does anyone know if I can send MSUCOM additional LORs?

Thanks so much for sharing, as I have not gotten that email. Hope that's not a bad sign 🙁

Well I treat this email as a bad sign, feeling like the school tells me: Look how competitive the applications are! Now you know why you're gonna be kicked out of the pool.😀

Are you a reapplicant multiple times over? A post bacc gpa coupled with a master's curriculum seems like a long time to be taking their advice and not be getting the desired results... Unless your post bacc classes = your masters classes. Because if you took their advice with the post bacc classes and still didn't get in as a reapplicant, that's not very encouraging for those of us that also took their advice and are waiting for the results of all that extra money and time spent on said advice... I'm hoping this is your first or second time applying and if so, I would 100% meet with them again if I were you.

Hi Sorry it took so long to respond! This is my second time applying. I took their advice once before applying, but did not take enough post-bacc courses last year. This year (between Jan and Aug) I took 15 additional credits of post-bacc courses, and I also completed 12 credits of Masters. I will be done with my Masters by May 2014 since I also got credits transferred. In any case, I'm doing everything I can to show them I want MSUCOM.

I kind of feel depressed about the e-mail. It looks like it's a really competitive application cycle for them. You would think that it would be easier to get in since all the new Michigan MD schools that have recently been opened. Sigh. We just have to hang in there. 🙂

I'm one in 1646.

But this is still very early in the cycle - guarantee the class will change as Jan/Feb rolls around. You look at any med school, MD or DO, and the strongest applicants will get accepted in 2013 (i.e., higher MCAT/GPA/ECs). Not to mention that is 52/320 seats!! There are still 270 to be filled!!

Call me naive, I call me optimistic!

Got this email today for anyone that's interested:

You have MD quality stats, though. 😛

Damn, that's some high sGPA!

Got the email too. While I'm grateful MSUCOM is keeping us updated on the process so we're not left in the dark, that sGPA scares the bejeezus out of me 🙁.

Yeah no problem! I'm basically in the same position with taking post baccs except Ann Snyder told me to take 20 credit hours of post bacc upper 300/400 lever sci classes and get a 3.5 or above and it would replace my other scigpa (which was 3.0) and I did them all within 2 semesters and got a 3.84. So I'm hoping this is my year... Is that similar to the advice you got?

Wow... yeah, that's a bit daunting. Here's to hoping my MCAT being higher than their reported highest of 30.66 helps make up for that one...

Thanks, I wish I could say my current MCAT was a first attempt but its the third, and averaging it in with two other MCAT scores would put me a few points below below their current avg MCAT accepted. Hence, the attempts at optimism, haha

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

You did good work. Great perseverance! I would let you in if I was an ADCOM. 🙂

Don't feel bad lol. Same situation here, and I'm sure there are others that are in worse situations!

Does anyone know the special tuition rate for canadians? I am trying to find it on their site and even called them but no luck.

Hm no idea. I'm not Canadian but am OOS and need to call them today to see what can be done about this OOS tuition that approaches 90k because unless that can be lowered, I can't possibly put myself that far in the hole. Anyways, if I find anything out I'll post it on here.

Don't quote me on this but I think you get $25k a year, so tuition ends up being ~55k/yr.
