Anyone going to the campus tour this Friday? What would be the recommended attire for this?

I'm going, but I couldn't find where it says what to wear; so I'm just wearing khaki pants and a dress shirt. There are gonna be med students and the MSUCOM administrative team there, so it's a good idea to dress nice. I was wondering where we are meeting? Somewhere in Fee hall?

Do you have to get an invite to go to a campus tour? I never got anything about one unless you're talking about the Detroit/Macomb sites. I heard from a co-worker that if you go to the campus tours that it looks better for you when they review your stuff..anyone know if that's true?
...waiting impatiently to hear from them for weeks...

When you get accepted, you sign up for a tour date. Not the email we all got about Detroit/Macomb sites. I don't know about the latter.

Appears to be the east wing of Fee Hall. You're going with black "dressier" shoes then I take it?

Yeah I will, it can't hurt. Where are you finding this?

I got a second email a few days later with an attachment that provided some extra information. If you pm me your email I can send you it.

I received a call today from a 517 #. I tried to call it back, but it just kept ringing. Has anyone received a call from admissions and had this happen? Thanks!

I got a call from an unknown number an hour ago... No message, so I called admissions and they said I was not on the list for today but that they are sending out acceptances today which surprised me because it's so quiet here

Thanks for letting us know. I'm surprised too that there's not a peep from any of today's acceptances. Must be out at their local tavern celebrating 🙄. Ah well, at least there's been no rejection letters this week. See you all next Thursday!

Has anyone actually got rejected or waitlist yet?

You know it. Next week!

I certainly hope not. They extended 150 or so acceptances for a class of over 300. Since 25 applications are reviewed per week, it'll take them at least until end of November to have gone through enough applications to extend offers to fill the entire class, assuming all 25 applications end in admissions. 🙂

Well they call on Thursdays and Fridays, so the week is not over yet. Still have a chance for tomorrow (at least I hope) 🙂

How do they only review 25 applications per week? According to their email, over 1600 people have finished their secondaries, and that's only thus far and does not include another thousand of applicants who will probably do it. And if they are only reviewing 25 apps, it would take them over a year to review every application, and that's including holidays. Their math doesn't add up to me.

I think they only call on Thursdays. Fridays' calls are usually to those they couldn't reach on Thursdays. I was under that assumption when I talked to one of the Advisors.

Maybe they do a post secondary screen? Only 25 a week seems very small...

I agree. They probably screen heavily post secondary and then review the top 25.

Unfortunately, I think the grim reality is that some of those apps just never see light of day. From past years' threads, it's likely that MSUCOM uses an algorithm based on MCAT/GPA/Volunteer hours to generate a score for each applicant, and then rank them in descending order.

Every week, 25 of them gets pulled out of the top of the pile and is sent to the committee for review, & only then will they read your secondaries and letters. Then they decide whether to accept or waitlist. I think as the cycle goes on, those who are at the bottom of the pile will slowly get rejection letters as seats are gradually filled. At least, that's how I always imagined it & makes the most sense.

Declining my acceptance here. I hope one of you SDNers gets it! :luck:

I can't seem to find it. Also, wouldn't we be class of 2018 if we're starting in 2014? 🙂

You are correct. Thankfully I used the correct year in the actual group and simply typed it wrong in my post. :smack:

Also, I made it within MSU, which requires an @msu email address to join. So I deleted that one and made an open group outside of MSU. Here's a link to the updated group!

Does anyone know if msucom will consider update grades in January after first semester ? I'm sitting at all classes above 95 and would love to include that GPA in my consideration if I can maintain it

They would have filled the class by then wouldn't they? Can't hurt to try.

Last year they were taking people off the wait list right up until May, so no not necessarily. I'm not sure about the grade update policy though...

Hello friends,

I just had my mini orientation/visit thing today at the East Lansing campus, and I have some info everyone will find interesting.

As of this morning they have 139 offered spots, and 64 spots that have paid the deposit. Also, ~3600 people have submitted the AACOMAS for MSUCOM.

For the Canadian people here, they offer 25 Canadians a spot in the class a year.

The acceptance procedure: Their office goes through all secondaries submitted, but only those with a certain GPA/MCAT/volunteering hours get picked (not specified). Then, out of those picked, the admissions committee looks at the top 20% and those are the ones they look through on Thursday mornings. Out of those, they finally look at all your other things, such as volunteering letters, letters of rec, personal statements, etc. Then the ones who deserve admissions will get it. The admission committee is made up of PhDs, DOs, and faculty members, and each is looked at critically and discussed.

Everyone accepted early, by mid November or so, will get their choice of campus. There are 220 people at EL campus, 50 at Macomb, and 50 at Detroit medical center.

Some extra info: MSUCOM is ranked 11nth of all medical schools (DO and MD) in the country for primary care. We also have a 95% (1st) match rate for residency, usually much higher, due to the fact that we own 1/3 of the DO residency hospitals in the country lol.

Well, I hope this helped some people. Good luck to everyone!! 🙂

Not necessarily. My friend wasn't complete until March of this year I believe and he is in the first year class right now.

Hey guys! Canadian applicant here, and just got the acceptance email today! Wasn't expecting it because I don't believe I got any missed calls from MSU last week. Still in shock!

Stats are 30 mcat, 3.7 gpa! This is my school of choice!

Hi congratulation! I am wondering Im too late for MSUCOM as a Canadian already? Do you know any other Canadians that got accepted also? I have similar stats as you but I submitted my application in Sept 19 and am still waiting for my application to get verified by AACOMAS!! I really want to get into MSUCOM too!!

Hey! I don't think its too late, I would definitely still apply. I had over 1600 volunteer hours, and also finished my secondary in the first week of July. Hope that helps!

So got a voicemail from the Assistant Dean about "options"... he indicated guaranteed admissions to MSUCOM if I finished a MPH first...? He asked to call tomorrow to discuss further, but has anyone heard anything about such "conditions"?

For the record, it is Tuesday (out of character for adcom it seems) and I already have a Masters degree!

😕

Hmmm. That is weird especially since you already have a master's degree. 🙂

+1. Yea, idk! But I called and left a vm, so we'll see what he says... Ill def let you all know!

Edit: He just called me back and it went like this: We like you, but your stats are lower than average, so we want you to complete an MPH with MSUCOM, followed by a 5-week testing period to prove you can handle the medical school curriculum, then you roll right into medical school -- no reapplication needed.

MPH program starts in January, application cycle closes end of October, so I gotta decide by Tuesday the 29th.

Wow. I don't think that your stats are low at all. There were plenty of people last year admitted with similar stats. So, would you start in the summer with med school or would it be next year that you would start? Their MPH program is typically a year from what I read. I think that you should go for it! 🙂

How bizarre. I had no idea they offered such a thing... I think your GPA is great (which is, I expect, what they judge your ability to handle the curriculum off of) and your MCAT is fine -- I think that means I have no chance at all 😉

Good luck making a decision! It's certainly an... interesting proposition (and maybe a bit presumptuous on their part that you would want to do an MPH after already having a master's). Do they require you do their MPH?

I'm guessing it would be their MPH. I'm really worried about my chances, too. I think this person has a beautiful app and lots of potential to do great things. I wonder if they'd make that same proposition for me? 😛

Yes, it's certainly an interesting proposition for people they see as being questionable! I'm actually already very interested in doing a MPH, but I had a specific school in mind where I wanted to do it. 😛

I think I would certainly take them up on a guaranteed acceptance if I could do the MPH of my choosing... maybe that would be pushing it a little from my end.

Thanks for the support, friends! I thought it very strange since the averages are 3.6 and 27 MCAT, meaning they've matriculated people with higher and lower numbers, right? With that said, they want me to do their MPH and it is ENTIRELY ONLINE.
Also, I was told this proposition only has 10 spots and they've already filled 8...
We'll see where the chips fall!

Interesting! I guess the 10 spot quota is why I've never heard of it before. Haha if you take them up on it: Mmedran, B.S., M.S., M.P.H., D.O. :prof:
