Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the support, friends! I thought it very strange since the averages are 3.6 and 27 MCAT, meaning they've matriculated people with higher and lower numbers, right? With that said, they want me to do their MPH and it is ENTIRELY ONLINE.
Also, I was told this proposition only has 10 spots and they've already filled 8...
We'll see where the chips fall!

What do you mean that they want you to do their D.O./MPH program? They called you and offered it to you. That is awesome. Do they just offer it to whomever they like?

I am interested in getting an MPH as well. However, I have been out of school for sometime so it may be wise for me to focus on one degree at a time. 🙂

Hey, there is an MPH/DO bridge program which is what everyone has been talking about on the forum. People are chosen for the program by the MSU COM admissions committee based on whether they are of a disadvantaged background and how competitive of an applicant they are overall. As somebody already stated on the forum, there are only ten spots available each year.
To clarify, just because you are in their MPH program does not mean you qualify for the bridge program, you must be of disadvantaged background (to be determined by the committee), and students are selected for the bridge program either because they have a less competitive MCAT score compared to the applicant pool or less than average GPA compared to the applicant pool, and the bridge program is an opportunity for those students to prove to the committee that they will be successful in medical school.

Here's a link to the bridge program information: http://publichealth.msu.edu/pph/ind...etting-up-to-speed-on-a-bridge-to-opportunity

Hope this helps answer any questions. Good Luck.

No, more like upon successfully completing the MPH and successfully testing for 5 weeks after do I gain admission into the DO program. So it's like 2 yrs for the MPH then 4 for the DO unlike a dual degree where you do both in 5yrs or so.

Edit: What 1495313 said!

hmmm.... it sounds great. Do you actually need to live in Michigan to do the 2 year MPH since it is on-line? What if they offer you this and you are OOS?

"...Students pursue their M.P.H. while taking some additional high-end science courses to round out their education..." This quote is from the website I posted above, regarding the MPH/DO bridge program. I know it doesn't completely answer your question but, my guess is that although the MPH is totally online, this bridge program also requires you to enroll in high-end science courses as well which may not be offered online like the typical MPH courses are. So, an out of state student may be better off moving to MSU's campus so they can take these "high end science courses"... just my guess though, maybe they are offered online, it doesn't state so on the website so you may have to call and ask.

From what I read about the MPH in general is that it's entirely online, the 5 weeks after are spent in MI and apparently tuition is the same for IS and OOS.

I just got a call about doing the MPH/DO program as well. He also said it is only available for 10 students although he did not say if anyone had claimed the seats yet. It will start in January of 2014 and end in the summer. In order to matriculate you will need to obtain a 3.5 gpa and take a test or two regarding the sciences. The assistant dean also said that this is offered to disadvantaged/underrepresented students to give a better outlook on health and prepare them for what is to come in medical school. He said as of now I will be a rejected applicant unless I take this opportunity. My only concern is the extra $$ on top of the already costly OOS tuition. For those wondering, I am a URM with a 25 mcat.

This is definitely an interesting proposition. I hadn't hear of this program before.

Congrats to all those accepted today, also! 🙂

1. Is the deposit refundable if you change your mind and decide to attend another medical school?
2. Are there any MSUCOM medical students here that want to talk about their experience?

Hm no idea. I'm not Canadian but am OOS and need to call them today to see what can be done about this OOS tuition that approaches 90k because unless that can be lowered, I can't possibly put myself that far in the hole. Anyways, if I find anything out I'll post it on here.

I am OOS too... please let me know what you find out about OOS tuition... I heard they give lots of scholarships to OOS students... I am interested in learning more

So were there no acceptances today? They say that they review 3-4 times a month. I assumed that since this month had 5 Thursdays, they would take one of the Thursdays off. But I thought that was last week since I didn't hear anything from anyone on SDN.

I had called last week and they were sending out acceptances, it's just that no one posted here that they got accepted. That very well may have been the case today as well

Wth is this nonsense with the OOS tuition!? Its like $100000+ a year for OOS residents after living costs etc.. That's ridiculous!

Is anyone else coming from out of state like me and going to the Macomb and Detroit open houses on November 8th? I'd like to visit the East Lansing campus while I'm in Michigan, but there is no official tour offered on November 7th or the 8th. I called the admissions office about possibly scheduling something and they flat out said that they don't do that. Does anyone know of any med students at East Lansing that I could ask?

Congrats, friend! And thank you! Your post has basically solved my MPH offer situation...

Definitely has left me curious.

To the person just accepted, congratulations!!!!

Did you find out last week? How many volunteering hours do you have? Are you an URM? 🙂

Just got accepted! 3.2 gpa, 24 mcat, 2.9 science

Congrats on the acceptance! You sure give us low-GPA/MCATers some hope yet! OP, you must have some Herculean ECs. Did you discover a cure for some obscure cancer or slay a manticore in between studying for your MCAT? 😛

ugh... I submitted July 5. L.O.R's came in late (sept. 19). Do they start reviewing after the LoR's? Anyone else in the same boat? The wait is killing me lol

Hmmm not sure. Is there any way to tell whether or not we have already been reviewed? I haven't had any application-specific correspondence since the "secondary submitted" e-mail < 2 months ago.

I am pretty sure you can log into your secondary website and see if you are complete. This includes a green check mark next to LORs if they received all of the ones you entered into the secondary. Other than that, I don't think any updates go to your status on the website.

Dear friends, I was just accepted to my top choice school and thus will be declining the conditional /MPH offer... Wish you all the best of luck!

Wow! Congrats! Best of luck to you on your journey! Where are you planning on going?

SDN finally let me creep on someone (the post pages haven't been letting me load since the upgrade). Good for you! Loyola is a great school! Too bad MSU was so quick to reject; they're missing out. 🙂

Accepted last Thursday! Letter came in the mail today!

OOS 31 mcat, 3.6 science, 3.5 non-science

I was complete last week and have a 3.5/3.5/25 and I'm in state with 2000+ hours and doing my masters now. Are my chances shot or what? The MCAT scores that they're accepting are so high 😱

I got accepted a few weeks ago with 3.7/3.5/25 with 1000 volunteering hours, in state. So your chances are good. The late submission might hurt you, but I don't really know by how much. Keep hopes alive! 🙂

Let me just say that I totally want to get accepted to MSU on Halloween. 🙂

Goodness I am obsessed with re-loading this page and checking my phone. Can luck be on my side any time soon?

It would be nice. It's such a dreary day outside (in Michigan). Some good news would be wonderful! 🙂

😱 My phone is dead...I'm pretty sure this has already been addressed but do they leave messages?

I'm not sure if they do. I know that some people get calls on Friday that are supposedly related to not being able to get ahold of the person on Thursday. 🙂

GOT THE CALL!!! I had a missed call from a 517 number and voicemail from the office... called back and they told me the divine news. I immediately began crying tears of joy (I am also at work, by the way).

easily the happiest day of my life so far.

IS c 3.65/s 3.5/26

GO GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
