Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been eagerly waiting for a call every week to no avail. I was complete on 07/20. My MCAT is well above their average, gpa a bit lower, and have more than enough hours of ECs and community service. I think I know why a lot of us who are decently competitive and who were expecting to hear back positively, have not, yet. They're probably waiting for accepted students that do not plan on going to MSUCOM to drop their acceptances after the December deadline. I was told they go for most of the top quality apps first and then down from there. I'm assuming they have a high deposit amount around $1000 as some other DO programs to reserve your seat. If so, there's going to be a big drop in numbers of potential students and more room to accept more. Hopefully a lot of us who are waiting on the edges will find out in the next few coming weeks.

Ahh that makes a ton of sense.. Thanks for breaking it down! Also when is the December deadline?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does a current student or someone in the know have any idea how likely it is to get your requested site placement? Additionally, has anyone deferred? Does the school make it difficult/how does that work? The office gave me rather vague responses to both of those questions.

Deferrals are simple--assuming they are handled the same way (can't imagine why they wouldn't be...).

You just email upon acceptance and tell them you'd like to matriculate the next year. That's it 🙂

Look at us! We can't even enjoy a holiday! Gosh I wonder what christmas is going to be like if I don't hear from them by then! :'(.

I'm living in denial and refusing to acknowledge this very realistic possibility, for now! Whatever helps me sleep at night for the next couple weeks....

I vote that us ladies are included in the next version, because if I'm in the class of 2018, I want in on ^that^

lol, they did do a really good job. The phone booth dude looks like my brother.

I want to watch my lectures on double speed. I don't mind being in a dungeon either.

Just wondering...If I submitted my secondary 10/08, w/ 3.5 GPA, 29 MCAT, Michigan resident, UM alumni...still haven't heard back about an interview...is there still a chance I could be emailed for an interview soon? I'm feeling hopeless and MSU is the only school I want.
You will definitely not get an interview.

Bwahahaha! They don't interview...sorry to freak you out. You have great stats. How are your volunteer hours? Typically, they want at least 800.

Wait...seriously? How did I not know this until now? I've had people tell me that they interview! Wow, my heart stopped when I first read that. I have 1000+ volunteer hours, so hopefully that means I'll be hearing back soon! I've been so frustrated that my secondary was submitted so late, and that could have ruined my chances. Thank you so much for the information!

They do sometimes interview people they are on the fence about, but on the whole...no.

I think that your chances are good. I've really only heard of a handful of people who have ever gotten an interview here over the years. 🙂

is it good to update your application?
I think it's quite important. I got my acceptance just a day or two after my second update... but they also told me that they had only reviewed my application that morning. So perhaps my experience was coincidental, but if you have something to update them on... do it!

How do you go about updating them ? Do I send in my transcript to admissions directly, or aacomas ?

I would say to send it to them directly... they make it pretty easy to send stuff through the online portal. However, I don't know specifically about transcripts. Maybe someone else can answer that, or just call tomorrow! The office is very helpful.

Thanks for the answer 🙂 ! I still have plenty of time before my final marks are released on to my transcript, but if I do solid this exam season I should be at a 4.0 so it can't hurt to send that in lol 😛

Can any one post the link to the secondary application portal. I lost the link as I deleted my email. Thanks a lot guys.

Feeling lucky this week! Who else wants to ride this wave of hope?
I'll ride that wave! I'll also think that it would be hilarious if I got the invite after having traveled all the way to AZCOM by then for an interview there on Friday (MSUCOM being my first choice).

lol Yeah, it sounds like you're going to get accepted this week just because of that! Good luck on your AZCOM interview! 🙂

Question -- has anyone seen their acceptance deposit deadline shift in the "accept offer" tab? Mine has just recently changed. I'm just hoping that's not a fluke, since I could really use that extra time to figure out my plans and put together the $1,050. :greedy:

what is the lowest mcat score you think they would accept?
"MCAT: the average for recent entering classes has ranged settled at just over 27. Here the range is somewhat narrower than the GPA review." Somewhere else I saw that "25% have MCAT of 29 or higher".

I couldn't find a specific range for accepted students, but I would expect somewhere around 23 (+/- 1) to be the lowest?

Hey guys, I got a message in my AACOMAS support box this Monday morning:

"MSUCOM admissions has asked AACOMAS to remind you that unless you have sent your official MCAT scores to AACOMAS using the THx service then the scores are not officially recorded. You can check this by logging in to you AACOMAS account and checking to be sure that the MCAT scores is recorded on the Official MCAT tab."

Has anyone else gotten this message? I checked my application, and I have all my official scores listed, so I'm not sure if it's just a friendly reminder, or if they're missing my scores.
