Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got an ii yesterday. The first date available was Jan. 16 and I'm nervous that the class will be full by then anyway. Hopefully the next class size update will make us all feel better.

I'm pretty sure you are accepted if you explain whatever they are unsure about on your application. So you must have something hindering your acceptance, like stretch of low grades or a criminal record.

I don't think the class will be full by then. The deadline for deposits are coming up so more seats will definitely open up.

Do you know when that is? and how much is the deposit?

Deposit is $1050..well it kinda varies for people I think..on my portal it said that I have 1 month from the day that I received my acceptance to pay

I'm extremely surprised by people receiving rejections already...I thought MSUCOM didn't send out rejections until the very end of the cycle?

I have to say, I have respect for schools that don't string applicants along for 8-12 months. At least that way, it's still early enough that unsuccessful applicants have some time to improve weaknesses before the next cycle begins.

To those who received upsetting news from MSUCOM, try to hang in there :/ This whole process seems to be inexplicable and even random at times - aspects of your application that might "wow" some schools, could be totally glossed right over by the eyes of an adcom at another. I'm really hoping that each of you receive great news from some of your other schools.

No criminal record that I know about, so hopefully I'll be able to adequately explain whatever it is they are wondering about. MSUCOM is my first choice, so I would be so relieved to learn there were still spots open before my interview!

If you didn't receive an email about it, it probably is an error? I would DEFINITELY call admissions though and confirm that it is
I ended up getting an email, I am actually wait listed ! Hopefully there is a lot of movement on the Canadian list 🙂

what is the lowest mcat score you think they would accept?
When I set up my advising appointment in spring 2013 I received an email saying an MCAT score of 25 was acceptable if the score in each section was at least an 8. Of course, you don't need an 8 in every section, but it's a better minimum if your overall score isn't as high.

I am new to SDN and have a question-- Can you privately message people on here or is everything posted to a public forum?

has anyone taken the princeton mcat course? is it really worth it? my mcat score could probably use a little help i think, and i'm just looking for advice to see if it's worth it

Yes -- if you click on a username and go to "start a conversation" you will PM them.

I took Kaplan. It helped immensely, my score went up 4 points and I only took my two mcats 2 months apart.

For another opinion, I took an Examkrackers course. My score went up 7-9 points to 36 (I took it twice before the course -- a 27 and 29)... though I don't credit them for all my improvement, since I worked pretty hard the third time. 😉

Edit: I also had access to the Kaplan online course material, which I found to be great content review and great practice tests.

ok... another question... I have four retakes that I could retake and do so much better in, but my fiancé says it's all about a balance... to take two retakes and two upper level bio courses. I feel like hitting my head against a wall... lol I have no idea what to do. I do get to talk to an advisor on the tenth so i'm sure she'll confirm what I should do... but i wouldn't mind advice either 🙂 I don't know if any of you have ever gone through these questions before or not lol

Rejected via email. 3.3 29q tons of ECs. Guess my Gpa is kinda bad for this one. Good luck to rest!

I got an email from AACOMAS saying MSU needed my official MCAT scores in order to be complete. Wtf? I thought I was complete back in July? And other schools that I applied to haven't complained of this even with ii.

This doesn't make any sense. So basically I've been incomplete all these months when I thought I was complete.

In any case I withdrew my application. The OOS tuition is not gonna work for me. Good luck yall

I believe the consensus is that everybody who applied to MSU got that e-mail. It's just a reminder to make sure you officially released your scores (not a request due to them missing your scores).

I didn't get this e-mail.

So I was thinking about trying to tour the campus. I'll be in the area next week. Is this a good idea while I'm waiting for an interview? Also should I call them up to schedule a tour? Ya know make sure I'm not a silent reject first?

I think it's a great idea to show your face to them before hearing back from them. I think that's actually the reason I was accepted so quickly after one of the deans took down my name at an open house. Just be sure to be really nice, ask questions, let them know MSUCOM is your number one choice (they have a big problem with accepting people then they leave once they are accepted somewhere else), and don't over or under dress (khakis or dress pants, decent shoes and a nice sweater or button down would do). The only problem with doing a tour next week is that the students just had finals and are on break as of this last week. Would you be able tour in January? Also, when you mention this interview, do you mean you had one set up? MSUCOM does not typically interview. Once your secondaries are complete the next thing you hear from them is your acceptance or rejection.

I didn't get this e-mail.

I think everyone who's OOS got that email, judging from the replies. I don't know whether I should be happy or sad that I received no word this week 🙁. Ah well, back to application purgatory I go. Sorry to hear all those that got rejected, and good luck to those on the waitlist!

Sorry -- it wasn't an e-mail. It's a message in the AACOMAS portal.

Don't sweat it. When I called the office I was told that they would still be filling positions in January due to the slower admissions process. Getting an interview at a school that doesn't is a pretty good sign of interest. Good luck! Aside from that, keep in mind that in three years of applying to various schools I never once interviewed. I failed about as badly as one could. Be grateful for what you have and take that feeling into your interview because there is nothing more self sabotaging than lack of confidence.

Unfortunately I would have trouble coming in January, I live in Amarillo Texas but my in laws live in Toledo, OH so we're going to visit them next week. And no I do not have an interview scheduled, sorry I didn't know they usually don't interview applicants. This is defiantly my first choice, it's a fantastic school, I love the area and I know it would be an incredible opportunity to go here. Thanks for your help though! Ill email them and see if they would be willing to give me a tour then. Congrats btw on your acceptance!!

December admission stats are out, check the portal. I didn't get an e-mail yet.

Just got the email, heres the gist:

Greetings Applicants,

Below you will see our December admissions process update. We plan to communicate with you monthly in order to provide as much information as possible. Applicants are selected for Admissions Committee review based on several criteria including a combination of academic accomplishments, extracurricular experiences, timing of application completion, etc.

We anticipate filling the class by February, and continue to construct a waitlist until mid-Spring. Students who are selected for the waitlist could be notified at any time prior to the start of orientation. Students who are not selected for the class may also be notified at any time throughout the admissions cycle. Please be sure to check your online application status to ensure your file is complete as your application will be ineligible for review until you have ‘complete’ status. Please note the Admissions Committee will not be meeting from December 23-January 5.

Applicant summary, as of 12/9/13

All AACOMAS Applicants: 4982
Admission Offers: 247
Seat Deposits Paid: 165
Canadian Offers: 24
Canadian Deposits Paid: 19
Average MCAT: 28.68
Average Science GPA: 3.62

Subjective factors of the application such as extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, letters of recommendation, osteopathic interest, and personal statements are not quantifiable and therefore we are unable to provide data on these highly valued application entities.

As a reminder: If offered a place in the entering class of 2018, all requirements must be completed and official transcripts received prior to the start of orientation on June 11, 2014. If admitted students do not complete all requirements, they will not be permitted to enroll in medical school classes. Please review our list of requirements at http://www.com.msu.edu/Admissions/Applying/Requirements_for_Admission.htm. Courses used to meet undergraduate general education requirements do not always meet MSUCOM requirements. Past candidates have had particular difficulty with our requirements for genetics and for behavioral science. Completion of six semester credits of behavioral science is intended to prepare you for practicing holistic medicine by looking at how humans act individually and in groups. For clarification, we do not accept multidisciplinary survey courses such as general humanities and social science courses. At least ninety percent of course content must be dedicated to the study of behavioral science. Examples of subjects which do fulfill this requirement include Psychology, Sociology, Social work, Cultural Anthropology, Organizational Behavior, Military Leadership and/or Command.

Best wishes to you & happy holidays,

MSUCOM Admissions

Looks like there's a single Canadian spot left.
So sad, the Canadian spots are basically all full sighhhh...
Haha yep! I was just remarking on the same thing. Hopefully those 5 don't pay deposits and have got in elsewhere. Isn't there a deadline coming up?

Hopefully some of those that paid the canadian deposit end up getting in somewhere else and the spot comes to me 😀 😛

Not a fan of being waitlisted, currently at 2 schools, here and TouroNY 🙁

Not so much a deadline, they just said there are only 20 Canadians accepted every year at the tour.

I am too ! I live nearby though in Canada so no flight for me 🙂
I'm from metro-Detroit (just not living there currently) so have visited Windsor/Sarnia/Forest/London many times! I expect those are considered "nearby" Canada at least 😛.
Yay for meeting people!:joyful:
I look forward to meeting you guys (and all the others on that day)!

That's good advice. This is my third year applying too! Third times a charm, I guess. I'm definitely grateful to have gotten interviews this year. Just goes to show, never give up, right? And thank you!

Well, i got rejected today 🙁 It's okay though, maybe I'll get in next year 🙂

Truly, don't give up. I think a lot of schools like to see that you're dedicated enough to reapply. It's one thing to say that you would in an interview, another to do it. Especially if you capitalize your experiences during your year off. Good luck!

I agree, but I'd rather know now than drag it out for another couple of months. This gives time for everyone to improve (retake MCAT, classes, shadow....).

Hey @StudyShy you have really great stats..I am super surprised that you haven't been accepted yet..hopefully this is your week

^that's exactly the way I look at it.

I'm really sorry, guys 🙁
But on the positive side, you still have plenty of time to contact MSU and figure out how to improve for next cycle. MSUCOM's website even states that they look very favorably on improvement. Just stick with it and don't give up - perseverance goes a really long way in this process.

Unfortunately, I will be declining my acceptance offer. I decided to stick with going the MD route. I hope someone on here gets the spot! Good luck everyone !!
