Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does anyone know much about deferring acceptances? if I am fortunate enough to get accepted off the waitlist, I would like to defer one year, but im not sure if waitlist acceptances can be deferred. It's quite nerve-wracking to think i might potentially be starting classes a week after hearing from them... and i also have some personal reasons. any input would be appreciated!

I believe you can, it was stated in the waiting list FAQ email that you could discuss that once admitted:
"If I am admitted, may I defer my admissions offer?

You may request a deferral of your admissions offer by sending an email with a detailed summary of the reason for your request. It is not possible to defer based on site placement preference"

Anyone know if there is a specific average that needs to be maintained in your last semester to maintain the admission offer ?

I don't think so in general... but any pre-requisites need to be passed with a "c" or higher (no "c-" allowed). If you fail to pass requirements at this level, your matriculation may be delayed a year.

Thanks for the response 🙂!
No problem! That is what I was told over the phone when they were discussing my acceptance (pass my last pre-requisite with a C or higher and I'm good). I assume they would have notified you of any conditions for your acceptance, so just don't totally fail out of your last semester and you're golden. 🙂

Getting prettttty excited to move to EL in a month and meet some of you! :hardy:

When did everyone receive their email/further info after receiving an acceptance? So far my checklist of things to do contains:
1. Accept offer on portal
2. turn in grad app
3. turn in transcripts
4. get immunizations updated
5. get fingerprinted

is that all?

You forgot the
6. Pay money
7. Pay money
8. Pay money

Naw, but seriously... deposit, orientation order, and tuition + confirming attendance (if you have your stuinfo login) are all also on the docket! However, it may still take a bit for you to get the mailed letter.

If you're in the FB group, someone recently posted a more comprehensive list, so check that. If you're not in the FB group... get in it. 😉

URGENT question: Ladies - what size coat should I order if I'm a 34? Won't a 36 be ginormous? Especially since I'm 5.0' and small built

In the Facebook group, they said that you shouldn't worry about it because you can exchange the coat if it's too big or too small very easily.

Great thanks. Also where did everyone get their fingerprinting? I believe my local police station has a finger printing facility - should I check there?

My impression (no pun intended) is that you need to get it done at the specific agency designated by the Certified Profile people (Identogo/MorphoTrust/some sort of shady and vague company that sets up in tiny office you would never otherwise see). Even then, I believe you need to do it in the state of Michigan. I tried to do it in my current state through Identogo, but they told me I could only do the specific package necessary for MSU in the state of Michigan. I guess they either didn't have the LiveScan technology in my state and/or couldn't transmit it to the College due to state databases... or something 😕.

If you follow their fingerprinting guidelines, it shouldn't be too difficult:

So I've heard rumors that our anatomy class this summer doesn't have a set daily schedule, that the class-time/lab-time hours and days change and are different week by week which honestly strikes me as a little unusual... Can anyone attest to the validity of this rumor or does anyone know where we can find an exact layout of the class times? I'm assuming it'll be on our student portal but I still can't access that yet and I'm needing to schedule stuff for June and am unable to tell people when I'll be in class :/

Portal says 8am-12pm Mon-Fr for anatomy... hopefully that's accurate and not a generic time period for credit purposes or something. A set schedule would be nice!

I have a hard time believing this to be honest, all the students I have talked to said it is very structured, 8-12 and then lab afterwards. We should be getting the schedule relatively soon, I spoke with the coordinator of the course and they told me it should be posted to the class site in the coming weeks

Thanks so much guys! This makes me feel a lot better. At which point do you gain access to the portal though? I've confirmed my attendance already and I thought it would just be after I did that but it still won't recognize me..

runaway,
the anatomy schedule is on the google calendar, along with the rest of the schedule until christmas break.

So my portal shows the acceptance offer and deposit deadline but it won't let me accept the offer or make the deposit. Did anyone else have this problem? My deadline is tomorrow :scared:

EDIT: Nevermind I got it all figured out, just need to pay that handsome lump sum :smack: and I'm officially Spartan!!

Where is the google calendar link ? Must have missed it

ALSO, has anyone been able to access msucom student portal yet? Not stuinfo, the actual portal

I had quite the time trying to figure out how to import this calendar into iCal, but in the end I figured it out choosing to "Subscribe to Calendar" and then paste this URL.

I just talked with student services and she said we won't be able to access the actual "student portal" until orientation. So I'm not sure what it was he was referring to when he said "portal" but that's what I know!

Oh cool, I hadn't heard of this calendar yet. Thanks for sharing it!

Note: I may be inept, but I also had a devil of a time getting that added to my calendar... until I found the tiny button in the very bottom right of the screen where you can click to add it to your own Google calendar.

Hey! Yeah thanks for the calendar link! Much appreciated.

Looks like we have a quiz before our white coat ceramony... lol

Thanks by the way!

Yikes, I know! I noticed that too a couple of weeks ago when I was looking at the schedule! I'm hoping it's a typo or something haha

For those who got accepted to msucom but are waiting to hear back from other schools ... did you pay the $7000 summer tuition fee that was due April 29? I paid the $1000 seat deposit and $500 orientation fee, but the tuition is a little too much.
Yep... Though I'm going to turn down any further acceptances and tell them "MSUCOM for life, chumps!"

... but I won't withdraw yet because I still want to see if whether or not I do get into those places. It's kind of a sanity (read:ego) thing. :laugh:I can't believe it's already been a full year of this application nonsense.

Anyone know the lowest MCAT score that got in recently? I have met with admissions multiple times and one member told me if I score a 27+ I'll be fine. I'm just worried about scoring a 26 and having to take this test again.

Does anyone know if the CATA bus line runs on a regular schedule during the summer? Thanks

My boyfriend said yes, he went there for undergrad 🙂

That depends what CATA line you wish to ride.

There is NO Spartan Service. This means any of the MSU campus specific routes DO NOT run during the summer. There is reduced service on other routes that have on and off campus stops. I hope this information is helpful.

Hmm i was looking at last years thread and noticed that there were a few people who were guaranteed seats in this years class.. has anyone gotten that this year? Just wondering because i had given up hope and had started studying for an Mcat retake and then on the may 1st i received an email that i was invited to be placed on the waitlist! not sure if i should have much hope with it being so late.

I was wait listed in January and I'm still waiting and hoping. All of my other 18 applications where rejected with no interviews. 🙁 I'm hopeful but planning on not getting in. I know they said about half of the wait list moves.

Hopefully we'll be amongst those movers and or maybe an offer for next years class, id say a spot in next years class is much better than having to retake mcat again pay more money and resend apps, pay more money and complete secondaries then... "pay more money" and wait again.
