Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am actually really love the curriculum here. Don't get me wrong it is a lot of work and the pride themselves on forcing their student constantly to adjust and re-adjust. If you like to be challenged often you will like here! I feel like they are totally preparing us for boards as well as being real osteopathic physicians They are also really good at helping you whenever you are having a hard time adjusting or grasping the material (of which there is boat loads of lol).. All and all, I am very happy to be here 🙂

when did school start for you?

That's really good to hear! It seems like there is a lot of opportunities to pursue research as well, or at least have the faculty body that are on the cutting edge of their field. Is the weather pretty rough?

Yup research opportunities are available and the weather is bipolar so if you like surprises you'll love Michigan 🙂

Can anyone offer a range or approximation of how many volunteer hours MSUCOM expects from applicants?

And I'm guessing if we earned course credit for unpaid research that no longer counts toward volunteer hours, right?

Although plenty of people with 600-800 hours are accepted as well. Keep in mind that the MSUCOM adcom members are not dumb, they know when you're padding the volunteer hours.

So if you include research hours and club activity participation hours as volunteering, don't be surprised if you're rejected or waitlisted even though your application had an impressive 1000+ volunteer hours.

Well that adds a bit more to my neurotic mindset hahaha. Dang.

@SkipJunior mind if I PM you regarding this?

I have also heard the 600-1000 hr figure thrown around... but do note that this includes high school (the hardest part for me was remembering what I did 7-10 years ago!)

And you're correct that it is not volunteering if you receive any sort of compensation -- credit included.

Thanks everyone...with high school hours, I think I'm in a good place. Not too many and not too few. *Hopefully*

so this week, on thursday-friday, our fates will be decided!!

Not really.

Only a small amount of the acceptances will go out, and will continue to go out over the months. If you don't get an acceptance on the first day that just means you weren't in the top 20% of applications, and will get your chance later!

I have just under 1000 hours of volunteering (600 of it is coaching/training, 200 clinical, about 60-70 tutoring, 40 during high school, and 60-70 as an orientation leader). Then like 12,000 hours of ECs (athletics with tons of achievements) but some of it stretches back a while.(2005)
Is the number of hours going to raise skepticism? Like if they whipped out a calculator and went off the dates it would make sense but I get a feeling they'd look at it and go "lolno."

What GPA/MCAT ranges are considered in the top 20%?

30 MCAT (8/10/12), cGPA 3.85, sGPA ~3.7. I also have a wide array of extracurriculars and what I think are strong letters.
Those are solid, thanks for sharing. Just wanted to get a feel for where the admissions committee started in their decision process. I have kinda similar stats however slightly lower in each [28 MCAT (7/10/11), cGPA 3.71, sGPA 3.56] and some strong letters as well so I'm praying for some good news soon haha

Has anyone elses LOR been delayed in uploading to the secondary application? I sent mine August 22nd (through interfolio) and it still says that they are not uploaded to my secondary yet. I tripple checked my AACOMAS ID, and even resubmitted them a few days ago.
Did you remove the dash in your aacomas ID?

what's the area code of the incoming phone number?

Hey guys, I sent in my primary on the 5th of August, but I don't think I'll be verified till mid September. Even if I submit my secondary as soon as I get it, do you think I'll be too late for this cycle?
I have decent stats if that matters: IS, 3.75gpa, 29mcat, >1000 volunteer hours.

You should be okay, but do be ready to submit right away! It sounds like the questions take some time, so it wouldn't hurt to have those ready to plug in as soon as you get the secondary.

Just received a new email regarding the process! 18 acceptances have been offered. MCAT range 26-35. GPA range 3.2-4.0!

Best of luck everybody!

So this largely indicates that they aren't looking at the top applicants (stat wise) first.

I guess so! Just like their neighbor school MSUCHM I think they really emphasize a holistic review so let's hope!
