Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sure,

When you setup a delivery in interfolio, you can specify to include you aacomas Id as a unique identifier. Typically aacomas will list your number with a dash in it. But msucom's system expects the dash to be removed. Make sure you removed the dash in your id or it won't match up in their system.

Thanks for that!

I submitted my secondary about 3 weeks ago and haven't been verified yet. I sent my LORs from Interfolio using the hyphenated ID number, and my account shows that they have been received. Do you think that that is the problem, or should I continue to wait?

Has anyone else had the problem where the application says it only got one of your letters even though I sent them all at the same time? I'm not sure if I should call them now or wait because they say it takes 2-3 weeks.

I feel like this is my issue. I listed that I was sending in 3 letters, but one of the listed was in my committee letter packet and should also be checked off.

I am having the same problem! I included my ID without the hyphen and just one letter came through...

So they start looking at our applications in August right?

What did you do if there is no end date to the activity? For ongoing activities...

I have a skype interview tomorrow for the DO/PhD program - anyone have any experience with this? This is my first interview and I am very excited!

They already sent interviews? I thought they havent even looked at applications yet.... DO/PhD must be different

Yea I pretty sure it is different. I emailed to ask if I was a competitive applicant for the program - they said yes - so I applied, and they scheduled an interview with the Director of the DO/PhD program.

MSU DO program does not interview from what I read based on last year's thread.

I was there today. Next week the director of enrolment will "teach" the admission committee what to look for in the applicants and after that they will have meetings every other week and will be sending letters with updated numbers of applicants screened/accepted etc

For the medically related shadowing, is that DO only or MD also?

How long does it take AACOMAS to verify? I have all 3 check marks but it still says processing

So just a heads up for those that may be wondering as I have, the due date to complete your supplemental app which begins 30 days starting from the day you received your invitation does not apply to your LORs. That is, the LORs do not have to be submitted/marked received within this 30 day deadline. This information comes from a phone call I had with the admissions staff.

Congrats on interviews everyone! Make sure to post your stats in the "Official Interview Invite Thread 2014-2015 Cycle" in the Pre-Medical Osteopathic forum so we can keep track of the schools giving out invites!

Sooo... I just started my application today. I don't have my LoR's, MCAT score (taking Sept. 6th) or anything done. I just finished putting in all my info on AACOMAS. How screwed am I?

cGPA-3.98, sGPA-3.25 ( 4 C's freshman year, rest are A's)
Hopefully a decent MCAT score. Can get two LoR's relatively easily

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to post in here in case anyone has any questions about the DMC (Detroit) site of MSUCOM or any other questions. I am a first year almost done with my first semester! Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck to everyone.

So we're probably not going to hear anything until the second week of September huh

Yep. Depending on your gpa and mcat, you'll hear sooner or later. The adcom I spoke with said when the committee meets they ask the admissions team for applicants within mcat and gpa range. Typically they start high and lower the threshold as they go throughout the year.

Any idea how wide their starting range for GPA and MCAT are? My MCAT is above their average (32) but my GPA is below (3.28).

She gave an example that last year they started at around 3.7 and 30 mcat. So you will probably not be in the first batch.

Emailed them today. They aren't looking at apps until the end of this month. Patience!

Edit: and I think this was stated before, but they are not reviewed in order of completion, so they must use some sort of ranking system. Looks like I won't hear anything for a while.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if applying this late to the game will seriously hurt my chances at MSUCOM? I have a cGPA: 3.75; sGPA: 3.67; MCAT: 29; and lots of volunteer, clinical, and research experience. I plan to have my primary application complete with transcripts by the end of the week.

As per above they review apps in order or how qualified you are not so much in the order received - that is until they start reviewing apps. At this point you should be find but I wouldn't wait any longer. Earlier is always better my friend! 🙂 Good luck!

I know someone already posted that they don't begin reviewing apps until the end of the month. I am a Canadian so I had to go down to the States to shadow DO physicians and wanted to include this in my app so submitted my primary on August 1st...I know it's late but I felt like it was worth the delay to include DO shadowing in there. I also feel I can elaborate on the osteopathic profession much better as a result.

I guess my question is: Does MSU review apps based on the order in which they are received or by ranking? My stats are above their average (31/3.98 as posted previously) so the latter would obviously benefit in offsetting my late submission.

Supplemental App completed today! Does being asked for an interview usually mean a no? I saw you said sometimes they're asked!

Also, if completed this morning, it doesn't hurt being "late" since they review applications through a tiered system, correct?

Its August 5th. You are still in the early batch of applicants.

I know a lot of people that go to msu com. I have never heard of them giving interviews, so it really is a rarity.

Getting an interview means your seriously considered but their might be a red flag they want to address. So it's better than a flat out rejection.

^pretty much. They typically just flat out accept you, people are only brought in for interviews if there is some sort of issue with their app that the ADCOM is curious about

Does anyone know when they start processing people though?

I got a message from AACOMAS today saying my app was undelivered because I had some classes listed as future/planned that weren't on my transcript. I listed them as future/planned though because they will fulfill the prereqs for MSUCOM. I deleted them and resubmit. Do I let MSUCOM know on the secondary that I'm taking those classes to fulfill their prereqs or do I need to have my school send them a verification of enrollment?

I had the same issue, so I did just what you are talking about. I removed them from AACOMAS and put it in my application that I was taking the following graduate level classes this year.

Same problem here as well. When I met with Admissions at COM and they said to include the details of what pending classes in your Additional Information section on the secondary.

They just sent me an informational email, they're starting admissions at the end of this month, meeting bi-monthly.

Why didn't I get an informational email? This is what I do with my time: wait for emails and refresh SDN.

" Greetings Applicants,

Welcome to the Michigan State University
College of Osteopathic Medicine application
process! We plan to update you monthly
(seats remaining, class profile, etc.) during the
exciting, ambiguous, and often stressful,
process of medical school admissions.

We will begin our selection process at the end
of August 2014 and will continue until mid-Spring 2015. Applications are reviewed by the
Admissions Committee based on the
combination of application completion
timeframe, academic achievement and
subjective factors (extracurricular activities,
volunteer experience, letters of
recommendation, and personal statements).

The Admissions Committee plans to meet bi-monthly for the 2014-2015 application cycle.
Admissions notifications will occur at any
time between late August 2014 and mid-Spring 2015. Applicants who are selected for
the waiting list could be notified any time
between August 2014 and one week before
orientation (June 2015). Students who are not
selected for the class may be notified at any
time throughout the admissions cycle.

Please be sure to check your online
application status to be sure your file is
complete as your application will not be
eligible for review until you have a complete
status. Additionally, you may find our website
to be a valuable resource during the
application process. We look forward to
reviewing your application.

Best wishes,

The Team at MSUCOM Admissions"

Completed yesterday. I just hope for a swift answer. This is my top school and in the IS tuition is just too good to pass up. I visited the Lansing campus and fell in love. I just wish they would give me a reply already. Underdog applicant 3.2 Overall 3.2 sciences and 27 MCAT. and that secondary was a monster.

From what I've seen it looks like MSU only starts sending out decisions in mid-September.
