Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My application status says complete in the portal too but I never received an email saying it was complete. I submitted my letters through interfolio and when I emailed them asking if they received my letters their secretary said they did. The portal just has a green checkmark next to my lor but nothing in the notes part. Did Robyn say something should be in the notes next to lor in the portal other than a green check mark?

She didn't... in fact she didn't even pull up my file she just said that because my letters were sent via email instead of interfolio they wouldn't be there. The strange thing is, each individual letter has a green check mark by it in the portal too. I re-submitted my letters via interfolio today though--just in case.

When you guys say that MSUCOM doesn't care about when you were complete, but mostly care about stats, what would you say are the stats they're looking for? Like 28 and greater MCAT and 3.6 and greater GPA get priority?

yeah that sounds about right. Of course your chances are even better if your MCAT is 30 or above.

Their last update email stated that 18 acceptances were offered with an MCAT range going from 26-30 and a GPA from 3.4-(?) so I don't think they are looking strictly at high stats on an academic standpoint.

This is just a guess but I'm assuming they do an academic screen and evaluate community work since this school really REALLY emphasizes impactful community service.

Hope this helps!

do you think they might be more forgiving of low mcat scores from in state applicants? they may expect 28 plus from oos applicants.

Oh yeah I'm def sure they will be a bit more expecting of the OSS but I don't think they'll be as strict as other public schools simply because they already kick up the tution so high for OPS that many go to a different school!

How many LOR does MSUCOM accept? I thought it was three max, but on the supplemental app it says at least three, so does that mean more can be sent?

You can submit as many letters as you want but they can only guarantee that they will read 3 of them.

A little info on how the admissions committee works is that each of the 12 members on the committee receives an applicant's file and has 2 weeks to review it and essentially make a summary of it. Then the committee convenes and the member that has your file presents it to the other 11 members while the rest have iPads with your application on it. So they're simultaneously reviewing your application while also being presented your application by the committee member that initially reviewed it. Then, confidentially on the iPad, they take a vote on whether to accept, reject, hold, or wait-list and the majority decision wins.

so they only go through 12 applicants every 2 weeks? also are you informed if you are placed on hold or waitlisted?

I'm pretty sure they go through more than 12. And I believe you are informed on your status either later in the day they meet or the day after.

thanks for giving us the insider info! how did you find out btw? so the committee member who presents our app will be the one who will closely read our AACOMAS and msucom secondary app and our lors?

that should be the case!

Hey everyone...another thread lurker here lol

I missed a number of posts, so could someone please fill me in on what the latest consensus is for submitting LORs? Send 3 letters max and include my AACOMAS ID without the hyphen?

You received a specific "complete" email? I assumed I was complete when my application portal reflected such. Did anyone else receive a complete email?

I did receive an email for everything lol.. when i made an account, when i paid, when the letters were received, when the app was submitted!

how important are strength of LORs... I have three letters and feel like one is gonna be pretty weak (generic he did well in my class letter) I'm waiting on another letter but it won't be complete until november. I'm still not verified but should be within the next couple weeks.

Does it look weird to send more letters after sending in the initial three? I have two more that are really strong.

Generic letters IMO are neutral in terms of affecting your application. A strong letter is important because it adds depth and backing to what you present in your primary application.

I really doubt one generic one will affect your application.

Hope that helps!

I am a part of the Pre-SOMA club at MSU and the director of admissions at MSUCOM came to talk to us the other day.

thanks again. do you know what percentage of the msucom class has to be instate? for example, texas md and do schools have to make sure 90 % of their class are texas residents. what's the percentage for msucom? I ask because I'm oos.

I don't know the exact percentage for this year but the fact sheet on MSUCOM's website says "86% are Michigan residents". So you can probably safely assume it'll be close to that number.

and 8-9% of the class is Canadian.

So you're implying that the chances are very low for OOS American applicants?

I don't think MSUCOM has a set limit on how many IS students in their class though, I think it's majority IS due to self selection. The OOS tuition is ridiculously high so most OOS applicants who receive acceptances end joining another DO or MD school.

IS 3.8 undergrad GPA, 3.8 Grad GPA, 35 MCAT, and mediocre extracurricular activities

Still haven't heard anything yet. Should I be worried?

There's a ton of MD schools in Michigan and there's a good chance you will get into several of those schools....MSUCOM knows that.

As of the last update email, which was only 1-2 weeks ago, only 18 acceptances have been offered. That's 5.5% of the total seats available at this school. So...no. Nothing to worry about yet.

Does anyone know what the percentage of students accepted got their undergraduate degree at MSU? I really wish my state school had a DO school :/

So when do you think the acceptance calls will come out today?

I don't think going to MSU for undergrad has any impact on admission. Maybe if a student has made connections with people in admissions then it would but just being a students won't do squat.

Edit: If your question is directed towards whether or not they have a bias

So when do you think the acceptance calls will come out today?

I don't know but I can't stop looking at my phone. No one has posted about an acceptance yet this week. . . maybe we will be some of the first.

haha same here!! I will be so happy if I see an incoming 515-xxx-xxxx call on my phone!

And keep an eye out for 586 area code as well! It caught me off guard that it was an MSU admissions rep, but ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!

congrats! you received the call today?

Also received a call from 586 area code just now. I thought it was a telemarketer call or something because I never in my wildest dreams expected to get news from MSU. I feel like this must be a dream. AHHHH!!!! Cannot believe I've been accepted out of state!! Congrats to everyone else who has been accepted.

Do they make calls on Fridays or is it just Thursdays?
Curious whether or not I should be looking at my phone all day tomorrow lol

yes, someone please answer this question. Also will they continue giving calls today till 5 PM EST or are they done making calls today?

Wish I knew about the call schedule, but all I can say is don't lose hope! I thought I would be toast with my 27 MCAT as an out of state student, but apparently other strong factors in my application stood out. I was complete at the end of June in case anyone is curious.

Congrats! 🙂 I hope I get in! I was complete at the end of June too. I'm hoping that being in-state will help since I have a 28 MCAT.

Do they leave a voicemail if by chance someone doesn't pick up their phone when /if they call?

So are you implying my chances are slimmer because they might assume that I'm just going to attend a MD school instead?
