Michigan State University (MSUCOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

Does anyone have insight into how the waitlist is structured/works? How many people are put into a tier ? Are there rankings within the tier system? Is their anyway to find out your ranking?
At this point, we know that there aren't a lot of people waitlisted. I don't believe there are rankings w/in the tier system, but that was unclear after my conversation with admissions. You can always call and ask--I love their admissions office. They are super friendly!

Hahaha! I called them and the lady on the other line sounded so fed up with dealing with prospective medical students I didn't even bother asking her anything lol.

Oh I'm not talking about the receptionist haha!

Thats weird...I don't really get how they can move people from the waitlist to the acceptance pool if they aren't ranked? I will call tomorrow and post any findings.

Thanks! I thought it was weird, too haha

For those accepted, does it take a while for it to show up in your portal or to get the email from them? Being neurotic and thinking I imagined the whole call.

Haha, yep, it generally takes some time for information to get updated after the acceptance call (since the calls are usually done soon after the committee meeting). Congratulations! 🙂

Thank you!! I still can't believe it. So excited to start at MSU. 🙂

It's not necessarily your interview. I know for sure that mine was related to my MCAT score and not my interviewing skills--sometimes there are just overall better applicants, and regardless of the interview, you admit the better candidate. Keep your chin up! Things will work out in the end. 🙂

Hey , just curious as to how you knew it was your MCAT score and not the interview? Wondering if something similar might happen to me

I called MSUCOM for waitlist information but did not get much information. I was told that there were 3 tiers and not much else, they said they do not have rankings within the tiers, and did not tell me the process they use to move people from the waitlist to the acceptance pool. They did say that I was listed as "Waitlist, Canadian" so this might mean there is a separate waitlist for Canadians.

If anyone knows more about the waitlist please share.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Well fingers crossed we get off!

Ugh I have been complete since September 1st and haven't heard anything yet. Anyone else on the same boat? I think they threw my app in the garbage and forgot to send me the rejection letter lmao
I completed towards the end of August so I'm on the same boat. I haven't gotten any update by means of rejection, wait list email, or interview invitation. I've heard some instances where people get contacted very far into the cycle after they lost hope so...idk. I want to be hopeful but also realistic. I have been itching to follow up with admissions but I'm not sure if that will come off as needy or desperate.

Let's stay positive! There is still hope for us.

Yea it would make sense that there is a separate waitlist for Canadians because of the specific number of Canadian students they accept (25). When a Canadian rejects their offer of admission, they can't fill it with just whoever is next on the general tier 1 waitlist. They need to replace that with a Canadian specifically, who will then be offered their scholarship for Canadian students.

I already have an acceptance at another DO school but I'm considering sending a primary here and wanted to get some opinions. I'm OOS, is it worth it to send a primary (and subsequent secondary) here this late?

Agreed with the above poster. My opinion is that you're significantly too late in the cycle for MSU (especially being OOS). 🙂

II 11-23 at 8am. Did not get a call though. Scheduled for January 15 AM session. Going suit shopping tomorrow! Anyone have advice on how to make the interview go well?

Be calm, confident, personable, and thoughtful. This might sound like vague advice... but it's important for the MMI. There's really nothing you can/should do to prepare, so just go in knowing that you'll do your best! 😀

Thank you! That is honestly some great advice.

Congrats MP,

When were you complete if you don't mind me asking? I am in the same boat as being done for ~2 months and heard nothing.

Anyone else from the 10/23 interview waiting to hear back?

It's been 31 days and still nothing.

I mean if you really want to go here there's never really "too late" until its past the deadline. It looks like they're still giving out interviews, and at this point their "awaiting review" pool of applications is probably pretty small and fewer people are going to be applying in now, so most likely they'll get to your application pretty quickly. They might still invite you to an interview pretty quick too ASSUMING you have stellar stats. If you think they might hesitate at all when reviewing your application then you might be a bit late. Based on recent posts they're still interviewing so clearly they still think they have SOME spots available and are still reviewing. That's my opinion.

Thanks Doc, I was complete September 23. Today makes 2 months exactly. I hope you get an invite soon.

Does anyone know when they started taking people off the WL last year? I'm assuming the earliest would be after the seat deposit is due in Dec

Interview invitation today! 10:08 AM, IS, Reapplicant, 26 MCAT. Do not give up hope!!!
I am also a reapplicant. In state, 26 MCAT, and waitlisted last year. What date did you choose for your interview?

Does anyone know when MSUCOM is sending out their next admissions status update email?

I thought the deadline was December 4th

I'm pretty sure if you're accepted before December, the deposit is due January 9, 2016. That's what it said in my admissions packet, and in my portal.

I think the deposits are due depending on when you got accepted

I was also confused by this as well. I've heard Dec 4, Dec 14, and Jan 9. Personally, for me the portal site said Jan 9 but once we get closer to that day it will become like 30 days or so and once we get closer to June (for WL), the deadline will become almost close to 24 hours or something for some. So I will agree with lahaiesi and say it's dependent on acceptance date.

What day(s) of the week do the interviews usually fall on?
