Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Drury Hotel baby. Best place to stay for interviews srsly. A lot of free stuff included with the room rate and it's generally cheap with the AZCOM discount. Also has a free shuttle to AZCOM from the hotel. I wish they had Drury's in California

Everytime I buy a drink on the plane they bring it poured for me 🙁

Whenever they do that, I ask for the bottle so "I can mix it myself." You could start off by ordering it like that and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you get a drink to calm the nerves and drown out the crying baby on the plane. ;-)

That's good news that SD will be another spot, as I suspect the Valley will become more dicey for spots in reasonable areas.

As you all may or may not know, Mayo Scottsdale also welcomed their first class being 2016, so PHX just got a little bit more political. I don't know how AZCOM will respond, but my class has already felt pressure from Creighton and UofA up here, so you will have to let us know what develops in the years to come.

I can sense some serious potential effects from this political conflict, but don't understand what's going on... Would you mind elaborating on this a little more, please?

Just something to check out guys, if you want REALLY cheap rates for a place to stay I'd check out airbnb. I've used this website several times on vacations. People just rent out a room in their house. You can usually find a person (I'd only go with someone who is well rated) who is willing to pick you up from the airport and let you use a bike or sometimes even a car at your disposal. It's not for everyone, but I've had great experiences doing this with my wife. Hope it can save someone a few bucks!

My hotel has a free shuttle to AZCOM (and back). PM me and I'll get you the info. Better yet, just send AZCOM an email. They sent me a list of "suggested" hotels. Some of which have a shuttle.

I'm paying about $380 for roundtrip flight + 1 night in the hotel. I'm flying from St. Louis, MO.

Thanks everybody! I emailed AZCOM to get that list but I'm liking the Drury - there's one right near my my sister's school in Indianapolis and we always stay there when we go visit.

The MD schools keep taking ward-based spots from AZCOM because they pay more for rotations and/or because many hospitals would still prefer MD students. For instance, we used to have a number of spots available at Phoenix Children's but as the number of MD students doing clinicals in the area has increased, PCH has gratuitously given more and more spots to the MD schools at our expense (and this is why the school is really trying to get itself established at Cardon Children's and get a residency established there ASAP).

Thanks. Man, that blows. So Mayo is opening a med school in Scottsdale? From what I found online, it said that they weren't going to be open until 2014. Did they open early? If so, I can't find anything, anywhere...

Their first class is scheduled to start until 2014 according to Wikipedia...
Arizona State is actually collaborating with mayo in order to make it a 5yr program in which you get a masters degree in your first year.

Yeah, I jumped the gun on that. Mayo Scottsdale won't open for another 2 years, so nothing to worry about yet.

It's kind of been this way for sometime. PCH used to be a fairly common rotation for us prior to 2008 but they started to select students based on gpa and interview. Each year, it gets more and more difficult to find spots there, among other places.

For example, St. Joes in PHX will no longer take any students not affiliated with Creighton unless they use VSAS. It may still be easy to get into if say, you want to do Rad Onc there but it seems to only get harder and harder for us in terms of availability and red tape, at least in the Valley.

Like random says, I sense Midwestern is simply not paying these sites enough, if at all. I know preceptors in private practices get a complimentary check for each student, but institutions need real and heavy incentives to take us, given the current climate.

I really don't know what the future will bring for you all, but do ask these tough questions for your sake and like I said about 3rd year, do not let them throw you wherever fits best for them. I'd almost go as far as to say treat 3rd year like 4th year, which, in a weird way, can work. It'll just take effort.

I'm going to be cancelling my interview on the 17th so there will be a spot opening up for someone FYI. Hopefully they send out more invites to you guys soon!

May I ask why you are cancelling your interview? Is it because of the potential problem with rotations in the future with all the MD schools setting up shop in/near Phoenix?

I am still gonna interview there, but yeah, that is kinda problematic. Why that city have 4 medical school is beyond my understanding of common sense. Plus Phoenix kinda sucked. Way too hot, I don't know how anyone can deal with 3-4 months of continuous temperature above 100.

Yeah, I'm kind of worried about rotations at AZCOM too with this news. I'm wondering if I should replace the AZCOM interview date with my Nova interview. Not too sure about the state of rotations for Nova though.

Nova has its own issues too namely the required rural rotation which may be asssigned to you in july august of 4th year when you really want to be auditioning for residencies

Whoa, good to know. Thank you!

👎 Yikes! Can you talk a little about how the residency situation is at AZCOM? As far as whats required and where (traveling and such)? Thanks DrWily. If its been posted elsewhere, sorry.

Has anyone else struggling to get emails from AZCOM? I never got a conformation email for my Interview yet.... Just curious if its just my email or if other people are having similar troubles...

Edit: I posted to the wrong thread. In one of the old threads someone mentioned that interview around 600 for 400 spots but that was word of mouth.

Just because I foresee people seeing this and misinterpreting it, I'm going to clarify:

Three or four cycles ago, Flu (I think) asked somebody in admissions about the number of people they accept. To fill the 250 spots, the school would interview about 600 and accept about 400 (=2/3 acceptance rate) to account for the number of people who would withdraw after an acceptance elsewhere. I'm predicting this rate has likely decreased because it seems like the past few cycles more people have been placed on the WL and not outright accepted than when this information was given.

Oops. I did say that in a weird way. Thanks for correcting that.

Wow, that sounds absolutely horrible. I may have come off a bit negative about AZCOM in these last few posts, but they would never do something this bad. AZCOM's 'rural' rotation 3rd year was technically an elective for us so it isn't nearly as bad.

I think AZCOM is making moves to adjust to the very congested Valley, which can lead you to opportunities that we never had, like San Diego. Each of the schools here will have to do something so it's not like AZCOM is alone in this. It will be interesting to see what becomes available to you all in the near future.

I do recall mentioning this, when I was first applying. I got accepted fairly early (Oct) but I remember posting early about it. It does make a lot of sense but I doubt they 'overbook' like that anymore. I think since we were the 2nd 250 size class, they had to adjust and overestimated to ensure seats were filled but now, I think they're more conservative and will rely on the waitlist more. That's why in the last two threads, there was much more waitlist movement than before.

I spent last weekend at the Arizona Biltmore and AZCOM is like a 20 minute drive. It is an exceptional hotel!! I saw AZCOM from the streets but their entire school was gated so I didn't go in.

I did a campus tour last week. Its really nice. Very well manicured and aesthetically pleasing. There is grass and vegetation in the main campus area and then traditional desert landscaping all around.

There is a real sense of community there, our guide discussed the various clubs and intramural sports teams students often become a part of..

Another interesting point: The whole campus population (~1200 students) are graduate-level medically oriented students. Everyone on campus is striving for something awesome, so it promotes a real sense of accomplishment on campus.

The reason I'm cancelling my interview is because I'm from the Midwest and would prefer to stay in the Midwest. I do love AZCOM but I love other schools in the Midwest more. And now that I've got a few interviews scheduled with DO schools in the Midwest (KCOM, DMU) I feel good about my chances at getting in to a Midwest school. I wish I could just go to the AZCOM interview and see what it's like in person, but I really can't afford to spend $400+ on a plane ticket/hotel right now, unfortunately 🙁

It's a bummer but I feel pretty good about my decision. Hopefully my interviews at KCOM and DMU pan out!

I just received an email from AZCOM inviting me to complete a secondary application 😀. Good thing I already did it a month ago haha!

Risky, and I wouldn't do it, but hey, you know what you gotta do. I'd take any and all interview invites even if I had to bum cash on the street. One acceptance in hand is worth 500 in the bush. 500.

All that and hot as an oven

I know, but it's my own personal decision. Since I'm already in a Masters program at DMU and I have an interview scheduled for the DO program there I have pretty good odds since last year all of the Masters students in my program who wanted either DO/DPM at DMU got in...

I'm living off of student loans right now (as I have been for the past 5 years) and I've already spent more than I had planned on applications (applying both DO and MD). My parents make enough money that I can't get any of the fees waived, but they don't make enough money to actually be able to help me with this process. I know most people will disagree with me and say that I'm making the wrong choice, but I have to do what makes the most sense for me right now, and I'd rather be able to pay my rent next month than fly to Arizona and interview only to find out that I got in to DMU or somewhere else closer a few weeks later.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about this more.... does anyone know if AZCOM would be willing to let me push my interview back? I scheduled Sept 17th at AZCOM, Sept 20th at DMU and Oct 1st at ATSU KCOM. If I could push AZCOM back to October I may have heard back from DMU at that point.....

This very true.

~ 2 mos very hot
~ 2 mos unbearably hot
~ 8 mos beautiful weather

Yeah really. People complain about the weather but you could go to another area and have really cold weather a couple of months and snow, or another area where it doesn't get cold, but you get hurricanes (like Fl). Wherever you go it's never perfect weather, unless you go Caribbean. Lol

true that, but not sure where you are from, but phoenis is hot as in above 105 for like two months straight. they think its ok when it goes down to 90s

I'm sure more dates will pop up soon and when they do you can reschedule as many times as you want

That makes sense. You have to do what's best for yourself. But, yes, I think you can push back your interview if you want to give yourself a safety net. On the AZCOM portal there's a place to reschedule your interview. Good luck!

I was born and raised in Los Angeles and frequently visited my grandparents in the nearby Mojave desert. Then I hesitantly moved to the Southeast. I'd take the 110 degree Phoenix weather sans humidity over anything above 87 degrees and a dew point of >/=20 degrees anyday. It's oppressive here in the Southeast. I can't wait to head back anywhere west of Dallas/Amarillo.

Anyone get a letter in the mail saying your app is on hold pending further possible interview dates(or something of the sort)?

Booked my flight to AZCOM today. Does anyone have recommendations for hotels that are inexpensive, near the school, and have a shuttle service?

Also, how are you guys planning on getting to your hotel from the airport. The airport is almost 30 miles away from the school so that's a pricey cab ride. Are there shuttles? Are people renting cars?

I called the Comfort Inn today and they have a Midwestern rate of $59/night. They also have a shuttle to the campus. (The lady I talked to seemed very informed of the interview process so it seems like a lot of students have stayed there. She told me interviews start at 7:45 and the shuttle gets you there by 7:10 and they'll come pick you up after it's done as soon as somebody calls.)

Not sure how I'm getting to the hotel from the airport. I think they mentioned something about airport shuttle discounts on the same attachment as the hotel list (in the interview email).
