Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't know if there is any rhyme or reason to how long you have to wait after your secondary to get an II. For AZCOM I got an interview 3 days after I submitted my secondary, which was significantly shorter than my 4 week wait and LECOM or Nova.

Hang in there! Still early in the cycle...plenty of interviews and spots still to be handed out.

Does anyone have any advice for the secondary? I think I can answer the prompts pretty easily, but I am not sure about the resume/CV thing. I have a resume, but it's geared towards job searching. It doesn't have my complete employment history (no room on one page.) Should I just attach this, or should I put together a full CV with a complete emplyment history? Does AZCOM really care if I worked at a fast food joint in a random small college town for one semester?

If you look back at this thread you'll find the answer to your question... but I personally called and they said keep it at two pages MAXIMUM and they want pretty much everything on there to be directly related to medicine. Hope this helps! I think they use this to guide your interview so use only experiences that you would be comfortable elaborating on more in an interview setting.

That is exactly the answer I was hoping for. Thanks!

You're welcome! Now that I think about it, I believe it's actually the CCOM thread that this discussion is on, if you're interested in more information and other people's opinions. Since CCOM and AZCOM have pretty much the same application, though, it applies to AZCOM as well!

I got an interview here and I included my complete work history. Although much of my work history is from businesses that I own and run. They are not even remotely medically related but from what I understand the interviewers have your CV during the interview. So I would definitely include all medically related experience and all work experience that you think may show qualities that would make you a good doctor. Pick work experience that would be to your benefit to discuss during an interview and definitely write the CV with the specific goal of appealing to the adcom.

Has anyone already interviewed here for this cycle? Do you guys know when the first interview date is?

Is there a limit to how late they will schedule the interview for? (I am hoping I can schedule it the last week of october or early november because it's going to be near impossible for me to get off work during Sept-Oct.

Nah just whatever dates are open on their portal. I originally scheduled for Sept 13th but then decided I want to push it back until after some other interviews so I moved it later in October. You can always schedule it and keep checking back for what dates are available and move it later.

I just checked the available dates for scheduling and interview right now and all the September dates are gone and the earliest in towards the end of October so if you do get an II I'm sure you'll have to schedule around that time anyway.

When you arrive for Interview, you will go into a lounge area in Barrel Two. There will be snacks and drinks for you guys out and in the fridge. There's a couple couches, and some tables set up. You will be with other students from other programs (like dental) so even though there are 40+ people, only 18 or so will be for the D.O. program. You will receive a packet of information mostly about when your interview will be (morning group vs. afternoon group) and who you will be interviewing with (faculty, etc). I would look over who you're interviewers are, then look in the packet for information on them. There will be a few pages with faculty biographies and it doesn't hurt to see what kind of background they have, and maybe ask them a question or two related to them at the end of your interview (not necessary, but something to think about).

You will be shuffled into a room and the Dean of Student Affairs will speak about AZCOM's stats, curriculum, etc etc. Half of you will go on the tour (afternoon interview group) while the morning group interviews, then you all go to lunch where you can chat with MS2s. After lunch, the afternoon group will interview while the morning group goes on the tour. Should conclude around 2:30ish PM.

Awesome! Lmk if you guys want to hang out or whatever the day before. I'll be coming into Phoenix around 2 PM on the 12th.

If there's anyone else whose gonna be there the day before the interview and is interested in meeting up, PM me. I think it would be a good idea to meet other applicants and get to know each other so we're not all tense for the interview. Maybe we can get a group going.

Dudeliness and I are interviewing on the 14th not the 13th.

Yeah what he said.
I get confused, it's azcom one day and SOMA the other.

Either way, I'm totally game for meeting up. As long as you guys don't all suck. In that case, forget about it. 😀

14th meet-up on the night before? I'm interviewing on the 14th as well. PM me anyone who is interested in a 14th meetup and we will figure something out.

Yeah, sounds like a plan to me. I am looking forward to this interview! :luck:

What, you told me AZCOM on the 13th.. 🙁

Like I said, I don't remember which day which one is. I just checked my travel plans again and I fly in on the 12th for an interview on the 13th at AZCOM. ATSU SOMA must be on the 14th for me.
Sorry for the confusion. CDTCorp, what day are you interviewing where? I will drive to meet up with people if need be. Won't spend the 12th or the 13th hanging out all by my lonesome. Lol

I am interviewing on the 14th at AZCOM.

Has anyone received anything from admissions about what time the day starts? My portal still just says the morning of the 14th

Praise the med school gods. I was worried that I would need to fork out $60-$80 for cab fare while visiting AZCOM 😀.

I'm also excited to meet the almighty dudliness. How many interviews do you have now? Last I checked it was 11 with 1 acceptance.

For anyone meeting up on the 13th (for the 14th interview) I have a car as well since I will be driving to AZ, if anyone needs a ride to eat or whatever I've got you covered!

Thanks I'll probably call tomorrow to make sure the same applies for mine

P.S. Continental breakfast sucks. Except danishes. I love danishes.

Eat a little something before you go.

Yeah it's up to 12 now. I've turned down 3 so far, PNWU, KCOM, and KCUMB. Wish I could have given you the KCOM, I know how much you wanted that one. Still need to email LMU-DCOM and WVSOM to cancel. I want to see NOVA, AZCOM, ATSU SOMA, DMU, and Western Lebanon before I decide where I'm going.
You wanna do dinner on the 12th? Anyone wanna do dinner on the 12th? Halflistic will be there I think, he could show us around the area. Lol

I'd be down for that. Don't worry about KCOM, I thought about it and I think it's better that I didn't get an invite there... too small of an area for me.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been thinking that the first two years of school it doesn't matter so much where you are, success is more dependent on me than the school. The 2 years of clinicals is another story, and I think I'll choose a school based off that first and overall feel second.
I've been thinking about doing the HPSP through the air force so cost isn't much of a factor.

Do you have a desire to serve in the military? Don't do HSPS for financial reasons

You mean don't do HPSP for financial reasons alone, right? It is a great option financially for getting loans paid of quickly. But yes, I have considered military service for quite a while. Obviously it's not been such a burning desire that I've joined or made that a career choice, but it is something that I would feel good about.
Basically the way I see it, I'm going to live/move to wherever I get work during/after residency and live somewhere to work and pay off loans anyway. I have no preference where I do that at so I don't care if the military decides where I live. The big downside is the possible (and arguably probable) chance of having to serve 6 months overseas away from my family. Other than that, it's pretty much like being a slave to my loans until I get them paid off.

Go to the military med forum for some more information on it. You have to do the military match before you can participate in a civilian match and that alone is reason enough to not do HPSP. Also as a DO you can bet on being deployed as a GMO

In a nutshell, whats wrong with the military match? I read a little into it and it looks like they make more than a typical resident (60k in comparison to 40k) as well as consider the years of residency as your "payback" time. Was I misinformed or is the quality of the training during residency compromised?

I may be wrong, but I think that your years in residency don't count as "payback time". Those ears just don't add on to your total required number of years. Also, I'm not sure what the compensation rates are for military vs civilian residency, but I do know that the military likes to include stiff like health insurance and vacation time in their calculations for a total of what you get compensated.
Like I said, I don't know for sure. I need to look into it more.

I was thinking about it until I found out that you are required to participate in the military match. From what I understand many people will go for something like derm that is nearly impossible to get if they are not truly interested in doing a military match. However, if the military really needs family practice doctors I believe you can be forced into taking that residency regardless of what you want to do. That's the story I got from a med student that is in the military program and what ultimately made me stop considering a military future. Going to med school is too long and difficult a road to be stuck with a specialty that you don't enjoy for the rest of your life.

Yes and kind of. The residency years do not count towards payback time, and if you are in residency past 4 years, they add one year of payback time for every additional year of residency. Also, you *have* to apply for the Military Match which is in September of 4th year and you will find out by December if you matched or not, way ahead of the civilian match. You *can* try to apply for civilian deferment and go into a civilian residency with the understanding that you will still owe payback time, but they do NOT have to approve of it. Frankly, it's quite a big risk and one that I wasn't willing to take.

I don't think the military can force you to do a residency outside of what you want to do, but they can force you to be a GMO (general medical officer) for the payback years after your initial 1yr internship. This effectively puts your residency on hold until after your payback years, and then you will go back and apply for civilian residencies in the field that you want.

TL;DR Only do HPSP if you really really really want to be in the military. The money is a non-issue once you are making dat cash with a physician's paycheck. You'll have a lot more opportunities and a lot more freedom of choice.
