Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah I was scheduled for end of Jan and moved it up to early December. Just check the portal like a madman.

Sent from my Galaxy S2

Thanks for reminding me to cancel my interview.

There will be a November date opening up sometime tonight or tomorrow.. Just a heads up everyone.

It's a hard decision for sure, but I can only hope that what I posted here just gave those who read it more clarity to the school. I may have come off negative but I'm just being as real as possible and I can only speak for my school and for my experiences. Anyone who goes too far in one extreme, be it positive or negative, in describing their school needs to understand that unless it is unanimous from other posters, things are hardly ever that one sided.

I have decided to withdraw my acceptance here, it was a tough decision but I think overall KCOM will be more beneficial to me. You can look at the bottom of my MDApps if you want a somewhat more detailed "why".

Good luck at AZCOM everyone!

Withdrew my application and interview invite for 1/22 got into CCOM! Good luck to everyone

Paid the $1000 deposit fee today. There's a very good chance that I'll attend here! Woo!

when is the deadline for accepting the acceptance offer? doesnt say anywhere on the portal

thanks

is the deposit refundable?

From the Matriculation Agreement :

REFUND POLICY with written notification of withdrawal more than thirty calendar days before the program begins. After a student has paid his/her entire matriculation deposit, he/she may request a $100 refund by writing to the Director of Admissions and mailed/delivered to the institution at the address stated here within up to 30 calendar days prior to the first date of orientation. Refunds are not given for partial or incremental deposit payments. A Student loses 100% of all deposit money if an official, written notification of withdrawal is received by the Office of Admissions less than one month (30 calendar days) before the date of orientation or if the student fails to matriculate at the orientation program.

Ouch, so if one gets accepted here first, they have to pay $1000 and can only recoup $100 of it if they get accepted somewhere else later on? How long would one have to make the deposit?

It depends when you interviewed, but right now it's Dec. 15th

This is standard for every DO school, I believe.

I have an interview in december. That's a steep price though. I saw that NYCOM did that but didn't know how it worked at each school. Well the first school to accept me will undoubtedly get my deposit, thankfully AZCOM is one of my top two schools. I hope I get like a month to make that decision though.

Nice, well done! I think I got your interview spot. I'm scheduled for 1/22 but still hoping to get an earlier date. Just submitted my secondary last week.

Congrats on your interview invite. Look up the aacomas cib for info on deposits and deadlines. If you interview in december there will be a later deadline, I don't remember when.

Just paid my deposit! Hey Neko did they give you your midwestern email address when you paid?

For those of you have paid the deposit, did anything new appear on your portal? (I'm thinking about student housing in particular.)

Not really. I just got a midwestern email address but nothing about housing yet. I'll look more into it tonight as I havent really checked it out since I made the deposit.

Ok, so after looking at the site more, once you pay the deposit you do get more options available than before you submit. For one, they give you a midwestern email address that you can now use. You now have tabs at the top of the screen where you can access student services, financial services and ITS. In the student services tab, there is an area where you apply for housing. However, they have not uploaded the application for housing yet for our upcoming class. They do have rates and descriptions of each type of room though. They also give off campus housing options.

So as it looks to me, you have to pay your deposit before you get the option to apply for housing

Yup! When you log in to the portal, it's on the right hand side. I think the only way to access it is through the portal.

I did a little bit of exploring on the portal, and you access student housing by clicking the "student services" tab on the top and then clicking "housing application" on the left panel. Then it lists all these different housing options (there are a lot) and you can click on each one to see a detailed layout of the floor plan. There's also a link you can click at the bottom of that page to actually apply for on-campus housing.

You also get an automated email through your MWU Gmail from the Dean that gives some detailed info about orientation week and stuff.

I'm getting super stoked about this guys haha

EDIT: Ost3oclast beat me to it

Can you please copy paste the dean email? 🙂 🙂 I just wanna see the orientation information haha😍😍

I got it Neko. Pretty basic stuff yea?

Yeah, the email itself was really short. But then in the middle it says "please click on this link" and it takes you to the student services part of your portal. Then you realize that you just unlocked all this new stuff..like housing, immunizations, orientation, health insurance, etc. hahah

Yeah it's not up on mine, guess it's too early.

I kind of wish that they have pictures of the different apartments/rooms so I can plan out my place 🙄 Apparently I'm bored.

Seriously, me too. They did have the floor plan available to look at though.

This is true, but I wanna know the color schemes and stuff 😀 I'm assuming the on-campus apartments aren't furnished since it didn't say so on the portal?..That would be a huge inconvenience for people that have to move cross country to come to AZCOM though...

Yea I dont think they are furnished. That would suck. Luckily for me its only a couple hour drive.

I live less than a day's drive away so it's not too bad for me either. I'd probably have to bring a U-Haul or something though.

I'm a first year living on campus in the luxury apartments. The walls are white, the carpets are blue, and all the woodwork is a light brown/tan. If you go on Midwestern's website and checkout the virtual tour of campus you can find a couple pictures of the apartments. I believe all apartments have a microwave, fridge, and stove. The luxury apartments also have a washer and dryer, and apartments with added amenities also have dishwashers.

I called AZCOM about my status update on my application and I was told that I was on a waitlist to interview :/ Is that pretty much a rejection, since the waitlist to interview probably won't move up that quickly

Thanks for that, it was super helpful!

Btw, do you recommend living by yourself or with other people? I've heard pros and cons for both cases, but it would be great to hear what a current first year thinks

And also, how safe is it at night if you walk from the campus back to the apartments? I was under the impression that it's a pretty safe area, is this correct?

I'm sorry for suddenly bombarding you with questions haha

question for all of you

- how much time does this school give you for board prep?

- is lecture mandatory? are lectures recorded and made available?

thanks

The area is quite safe. It isn't the ritz, but you won't be given issues I should think!

Lectures aren't recorded by the university. Most of the students record them (audio) and have a shared drop-box folder.

It's all up to you. If you find that you can study at home with a bit of noise in the background, then getting a roommate is a pretty good idea (from a financial standpoint at least). Also, you're never more than 30 seconds away from the library (and 5 minutes away from the public library). I'm married--and I believe Samiam is too--so take my opinion w/ a grain of salt, but I haven't heard complaints from other classmates who opted to live w/ roomies.

As far as safety is concerned--I wouldn't think twice about it. It's as safe as it gets. The on-campus apartments are in a gated community and you're literally ON the campus. No one is going to jump you here.

And what Samiam sad about the furnishings is absolutely right. I would also note that they're really lenient about what you do w/ the place ie: holes in the walls, hanging stuff, and the like. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys.

I was thinking about getting a roommate. Not so much because of the financial benefit but because I've heard some people say that it's nice to just come home from a long day in lab/class and have someone to talk to that can relate. Idk if that made any sense...

It makes sense to me. I'll probably end up looking for a roommate too if I go here. Living alone is kind of ****ty, and also its nice to have cheaper rent.

This.

Like Senlar said, I can't speak to the roommate situation, but I haven't heard anyone else complain. Personally, I tend to study at the library or with friends on campus, since my wife and son like to distract me 🙂 I suppose as long as your roommate isn't a toddler you should be fine.

That makes perfect sense. It's healthy to have that connection. There are also tangible benefits in addition to the financial savings. You can study together, commiserate together, and share notes or other information.

I am guessing you guys never had roommates from hell like I did in college. It made life so ridiculously stressed that now I am scared go through a similar experience again. The decision to live alone or live with a roommate is going to be a tough one for me.

I haven't had roommates from hell, but I have had housemates from hell. We had a rule that if you invited people over for a party or a hang out, you were responsible for the mess that your guests made. This one friend I lived with in particular would invite people over every weekend, which was fine. Him and I went to the same middle school and high school so our circle of friends overlapped a little. Anyway, the problem with him was that he would never clean. One day the rest of us got sick of it so we just stopped cleaning after him. There was literally several millimeters of scum on the stoves/counters/sink, boxes of leftover food everywhere, a huge piece of tarp and a table in the living room that were all gross and sticky, and cups/bottles occupying most of the free space. He finally cleaned everything (took him a day and a half) after we talked to him about it for the 100th time 🙄

It happened again, and again, and again. This guy was actually one of the 'better' roommates, as the only real issue with him was that he wouldn't clean. The actions of some of the other people in the house though were really bad and seriously made me question their commonsense/intellect.

But I'm assuming that since we'll be in medical school, our potential roommates will be better than your average unmotivated business major. I hope I'm not being unrealistically optimistic though by thinking that.

10 months for on-campus. But they offer housing during the summer as well if you want it.

12 month option is available for 3rd and 4th year, which I am currently on.
