Midwestern University Arizona (AZCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm pretty sure its only the deposit. Actually I'm 99% certain that's what they told me when I asked them.

God I need to decide soon. I'm starting to lean more towards AZCOM. I'm not sure how well I would do at KCOM with how rural it is. I'm used to urban/suburban life, and I think that under stress I would do better in a more familiar setting. I think I'd rather settle down in a place like Kirksville that go to school there. I feel like I have a better chance of finding an LGBT friendly community in Glendale, than in Kirksville, and that's kinda important to me.

Done Rambling now.

You won't be going out much. I came from San Diego, and Phoenix sucks (to me).

Settle on a place that is pleasing to the eye when you look outside your window

Semi-serious.

Edit: Now that I think about it, it's a blessing that I don't enjoy Phoenix. Then I can stay home and study without feeling like i'm missing out.

I don't really go out much as it is 😛 I'll try to live somewhere near some mountain, facing away from a strip mall

Can anyone point me in the direction of the "interview question bank" that I keep hearing about?

Much thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I recently decided to apply to DO schools and AZCOM is my first choice (CCOM being second). I know it is SUPER late in the application cycle and my AACOMAS barely started processing today (it took me a while to figure out the MD trip wasn't my thing). I spoke to the admissions office today and they said that half the class was already filled up. Any application advice would be greatly appreciated! I am writing my secondary and am doing as much research as I can about AZCOM, but any key points I should mention in the essay about "why chose AZCOM" ?
Also, I love how supportive and nice this thread is, I really hope I get to be in class with everyone!

In my secondary, I talked about looking at old match lists and realizing that Midwestern could place students in virtually any specialty, which shows their reputation and how well they prep their students. Their COMLEX pass rates are in the 95% range for first time takers. There is a lot of opportunity to stay in AZ for third year as well. These were just some of the ways I answered "why azcom". Goodluck!! Hope to see you in the fall.

Can't figure it out i.e. don't want to spend too much time figuring it out.

RUN/FluShot et al.,

How long do they give us to study for Step 1 after finals MS II and before MSIII rotations start?

After my recent acceptance into my state school, I will be withdrawing my acceptance from here. Best of luck to everyone!!

Did anyone receive an ii after they were placed on hold ???

This is similar to what I wrote, though I didn't think to add the bit about their COMLEX pass rate. Nice touch Ost3oclast!

We had about four weeks to devote to studying (more like three when you take into account the worthless didactics week the school subjects you to).

Thx. Another question: Is there any real reason to go to ICM other than Dr. S being totally awesome? I couldn't bring myself to go last quarter and I feel like the same is going to happen this quarter.

Interview tomorrow, Friday!!! I'm gettin the jitters. Anyone else going to be there?

Other than that, not particularly. I went because it was the only class I actually enjoyed attending, but you can easily never go, have all of the pertinent information you need, and ace the course.

And I'll be there Tuesday. Let me know how yours goes! Good luck as well =)

And ill be there thursday! I really wanted something after Dec 14th, since thats my last final, but I my only other choice was in May and i didn't think it was a good idea to wait that long, so Dec 6th it is.
Plus Im Canadian so I literally have to leave the country in the middle of my finals, try to not completely blow it while still studying for finals!!

Cannot wait for the 14th and this horrifically long and busy semester to be over! Good luck to everyone who is interviewing this week!

I'm Canadian too. The having to show them 350k in the bank if I were to be accepted its my biggest worry right now. How are you planing in financing it? The loans I think are capped at 250k.

Great interview today with nice, warm faculty. Very interested!

I got an II this morning at 3am, the poor soul who made a 3 am decision..I was complete November 6.

So apparently the interview spots available are all in March (mine is March 5), did anyone else get it scheduled four months in the future? I guess MWU has just become my backup school..

If it makes a difference, a M2 student we spoke to during lunch yesterday said he interviewed on the very last day, one in may, and was accepted 3 days later for that fall. Late date doesn't necessarily mean anything. They still make a lot of acceptances.

What time does the interview get out, the website said 2:30 is that accurate or does it run later than that? I'm booking my super shuttle back to the airport so need to know for that.

The interview yesterday finished early, like at 10 after 2.

So, my plans got changed. I know it's late, but if anyone is willing to split a room Monday night for the Tuesday 12/4 interview.. PM me! 🙂

Well right now I am just worried about getting through the interview since I dont have any acceptances yet. But most likely loan + parents.

Does AZCOM offer any global health experiences? During the powerpoint presentation on interview day, international rotation sites were mentioned but I sort of got the impression that it was something you "can" do if you really want to, but you sort of have to set it up yourself. Can a current student comment on this?

I actually asked about this during the interview. They have those rotations and something called DOcare where you do missions. I got the impression that it was not a very well-developed area at AZCOM. They mentioned that this gives the opportunity for you to spearhead something.

Update on the March 5th interview: Apparently someone canceled December 6, 7 so those dates are open. I went ahead and rescheduled (online) to December 7th.

Edit: Does anyone know the refund policy for the 1000$ deposit? Also, how often are transfers allowed from MWU, AZ to MWU, IA?

As ModernAlchemist mentioned above, there are options available. Some students do participate in international rotations, but it isn't necessarily an easy thing to set up. Something a lot more people do are international mission trips during summer between MS1/MS2, and from what I've gathered, those are a bit easier to do.

You can recoup $100. And as far as I know, transfers between the MWUs works like transfers between any other med schools: very infrequently and not without good reason.

I'll see you there!

Does anyone know the acceptance rate for the interviewees at AZCOM?

Moreoever, do they value any criteria more than the other? (eg. out of GPA, MCAT, ECs, interview)

Thanks!

I think it was posted earlier in the thread that the acceptance rate post interview is around 67%

How receptive or desiring is AZCOM of thank you emails/notes? I would prefer email as well, any thoughts?

For all of us who got the unfortunate "pre-interview hold": I contacted admissions and they said they usually don't review those applications again until the last round of interviews in March or April.

Also, they're cool with you sending LOIs through e-mail to keep your application UTD.

They accept them - i emailed the individual letters to admissions an they forwarded them on to my interviewers. Though, I was waitlisted so I'm not sure how much it can help someone lol

Nice! Say hi if you see me, I'm in a full grey suit. I'll be the one Ohio student sweating through the 80F weather.

So I read through the entire thread (41 pages, yeesh you guys had quite a drama going on). Is the feeling in this thread the same with regards to rotations and transparency? I noticed several confirmations that the school is increasing tuition by 2000$ each year, but I'm not sure how common this is amongst other schools?

For people that have interviewed this week, did they say when the admissions committee is meeting again?

I think there are interviews everyday this week, anyone know if they're waiting for all the interviews to conclude before making the decisions?

Would a current student be able to kindly post a summarized review of AZCOM, a la this post? http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=6430883&postcount=207

That review is from 2008 and it seems like the school has changed a bit in the past 4 years. I have to decide between 2 schools before my deposit is due on the 14th so I would love to know what current students think about the school. Thanks in advance!
