Minnesota c/o 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Absolutely on the supplies: use your own if you have them! Although they do recommend you have at least one maroon scrub top because you'll need that for clinical skills (maroon is the scrub color designating students in the large animal hospital).

And you can take as many or few of the electives as you want. I'm taking all three (I love being busy!), but some people aren't taking any. There's a discussion on the Facebook page about and some of the current students say they're all pretty easy: no tests and no homework. Just show up and learn. 🙂

I think all of us SDNers are taking neonatology except maybe tiktaalik. But he and I are both in the zoo class. And I'm not sure about scubblescully...

Another q (Can you tell im working on my paper work to night? lol) ... Did any of you guys sign up for the parking lottery? im confused... Does it really cost 200-450 $ per semester (?) to park???? Aiyaiyai~

Yes, if you want to park in one of the campus lots. I'm taking my chance with the free street parking along Como Ave (1 mile or less to walk?).

But I'm ridiculously frugal...

🙂 JKIM, another option, depending on where you live, is to use public transit instead. You can get an unlimited pass for about $100/semester. However, there are surprisingly few routes that go directly to the St. Paul campus, so it may take a couple transfers. When you're looking at housing, you can enter your potential address here to find out if there are any good bus options.

I signed up for the lottery. I figured what's a few more $$'s considering what my student loans already are. Keeping my fingers crossed for the Gortner ramp.

I didn't enter the lottery either. I'll take the bus or bike or something. I signed up for neonatology and the zoo and wildlife elective and I can't wait!

Parking in Gortner is the most convenient, but also ridiculously expensive. Parking in the State Fair lot is cheaper, but a bit more of a walk... and it really only makes sense financially if you need to drive and park every single day. There are pay-by-the-day lots that cost $3.50 per day, so a lot of people would park on Como when they could and if they needed to (i.e. running late, or the windchill is negative 20), they would pay to park closer to school.

The State Fair lot permits are tricky because the state fair is still going on during vet school orientation and the lots are closed for the first few days of school while they clean up the fairgrounds. Also, be careful with the timing of the permits- they are scheduled based on the undergraduate schedule rather than the vet school schedule. I needed to get a temporary permit for the first week of school and for the last week or two. Campus police love to come by and ticket people who don't realize that their permits aren't valid yet :/

Oh, and there is a little free bus that just cruises around the St. Paul campus, so if you do park on Como and it's really cold, you can pick up the bus at the corner of Como and Raymond rather than walking the whole way 🙂

Thanks, StealthDog!

And congrats on graduating! Have you started your internship yet?

We can freeze our butts off together : ).

I may join you eventually, but I'm going to pay for the State Fair lot first semester at least. I figure my commute will be stressful enough as it is. 🙂

I feel like an ***** now for entering the lottery. However, since I am very old and frail...I deserve a space😀

How close does the city bus take you? Like Como Ave. below campus?

One route goes straight through campus, another passes by on Como. Most others don't even go close, unfortunately...

 I can just see you using that to con your way into all kinds of privileges throughout vet school. Then people will meet you and be like, what the hell?

Old and frail, my ass! 😀

The 87 is the bus that goes through campus- I lived on University Ave, and the bus picked me up at my apartment door and dropped me off at Cleavland and Commonwealth (~5 minutes' walk from school). The challenge is that it only runs every half hour, doesn't run on weekends, and only runs til 7 in the evening... So for weird hours or weekend (i.e. foal team duty), I had to figure out other ways to get to school.

And congrats on graduating! Have you started your internship yet?
Thanks! I started my internship last week- today is my first day of seeing clients on my own. Yikes!

P.S. I hate to be a creeper- but I love your blog.
You're not a creeper! Thanks for the feedback... I'll try to get back to writing soon!

Hey Guys.. Thanks for all your inputs.. I have more Q's though... (SorrY!)

As you all may know Im moving from 2.5 seasoned So Cal to 4 seasoned MN <3 in mid Aug. I am also bringing my scion tc w/ me. Here is what I was told about things to do to my car...
1. change antifreeze ratio (i believe its 50 / 50 here)
2. Undercoat on the underside of my car (I was told to get this done in MN??)
3. Snow tires for winter...
Pleaseeeee add to the list.. ANY input will be interested

Also.. as far as parking goes. I believe that the 100$ bus pass may best suit my needs considering parking is wayyyy expensive (!!) however, if I study late at school, how safe/ideal is it to ride home on the bus at 2 or 3am.
and if i do drive... if i park in the street, I dont want to have to walk/bike to my car during winter snow season. Any tips ? Im sorry, these are such nooooob questions but in cali, i drive my car everywhere (only ridden public bus once w/ a friend in d-town los angeles... one of the scariest moments of my life btw... (bums and angry drunks dont mesh!)) and I dont really have to deal with the snow much here.

Lol. if any of you have questions about cali ill be happy to answer them for you! HAAHAH lol

I'm sorry, JKIM02- I don't know much about cars.

I thought a 50/50 antifreeze ratio was standard? I don't use snowtires or have an undercoat. I've never had a problem in the snow or cold- and I drive a 1989 Volvo station wagon. I think if you're going to be living in the city, you shouldn't worry too much.

That's just my experience, though. Maybe I've just been lucky. I also park in a garage, and I think that helps...

For those of you in Minnesota:

Are we still on for Wednesday?

Yep, still on. Does 7 p.m. work? Still looking for restaurant recommendations.

I didn't answer this right away because I had no idea if I was a bad Minnesotan or what, because I didn't do any of this stuff or have any idea what my antifreeze ratio was. 🙂

I live in the country and I don't do snow tires or undercoats either. I'm not even quite sure what the undercoat is, something to protect from rust, I assume? And the only people I know who use snow tires are people who use their trucks to plow out other people's driveways and stuff.

I do have all-purpose tires year-round. If those aren't standard in California, I would make that change. When I first got my car, it had something else and driving in the winter was trickier. But honestly, you'll probably want to buy them here because people who sell tires here are probably going to have a much better selection (and thus cheaper) selection of what you'll need.

The only regular winter change I make is that when I get my oil changed, they usually use a less viscous motor oil for winter. But this is really standard here. When you go in to get your oil changed, they just ask you if you want it and you say yes. Super easy. if you have synthetic motor oil, this may not even be necessary.

Also, you'll want to buy a snow brush and ice scraper. (But again, they are probably going to be cheaper here.) You'll use it a lot, especially if you have to park outside.

Otherwise, just make sure your battery, engine, wiper blades, and wiper fluid are in good shape before winter starts and you should be good to go. Oh, and practice driving on the snow/ice in a parking lot or something before venturing into heavy traffic. It's a LOT different. Remember: steer INTO the slide! And brake slowly!

Also, I find it kind of impressive that someone from California finds Twin Cities parking expensive. 😀 I would think it would be horrendous there, but I guess I've almost always relied on mass transit when I've been out there so I can't speak from experience...

Could we do 6:00 or 6:30 instead? I think I'll chew my arm off if I have to wait that long for dinner.

Unless we're just doing coffee.

Yeah, I kinda felt that way, too. But the classmate who is closing on her house thought it might take her that long doing the walk-through and everything.... Maybe we should meet up for a pre-dinner snack? 😉

Pre-snack, pre-snack! 🙂

Yes, please.

Truth fact!

5:00? 5:30?

Where are you going to be?

We could meet at my house. But I'll warn you- our house is in the midst of a major DIY overhaul- so, should you choose this option, you'll need to prepare yourself for a bit of a mess. And a rather nervous dog who takes a while to warm up to new people.

Or we could meet at Ginkgo or any of the other coffee shops in St. Paul. Which, based on the above description, probably sounds like the better option.

Whatever you're most comfortable with. I'd love to meet the original elliepants, but Gingkos would be cool, too. And messes REALLY don't bother me.

Since my farmsitter is out of town, I'm planning on feeding the animals early before I come down so I don't have to worry about rushing back.

So maybe about 5:30 p.m.?

5:30 pm at my house (I'll e-mail you my address)? We can save a little money that way : ). I have lots of snacky-things...

Wow~you sure have a lot of cold weather car info! I haven't done any of those things. The only thing I do is have my oil changed to a less viscous type in the winter and add a few blankets, gloves, hats and mittens to the back.

I haven't had much experience with public transporation either. Hopefully you will have a better time of it here. Bums and angry drunks don't sound like much fun.

I do have a cali question for you since I will be visiting in August. Can you pick the BART up right at the airport?

This is not a closed pre-snacking party- if T or I or anyone else wants to join us 🙂.

I'm not sure if I can make it there by 5:30-busy busy day, but I do love the idea of a pre-party snack. Yummo!

Just throwing out some ideas for restaurants: Baja Sol, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chiante Grille, Old Chicago. I can't think of anything that great, but I believe that all of these are near HarMar or maybe even in HarMar Mall. I've spent a few hours shopping at Rosedale, so these places seem to stick in my head-lol. I'm open for anything though.

LOL! i guess im a sucky californian kuz i have no idea what a bart is. lol

As far as the undercoat ... i was told that since i have purchased my car in CA that there is not much need for a heavy duty undercoat on my car.. If a car is purchased in a place where it snows (ie MN), then a hardy undercoat is standard and comes with the car anyway.

Yay. im glad snow tires arent necessary.. im such a snow noob. 😛

BART is Bay Area Rapid Transit, so I'm guessing you're from southern California, JKIM?

Italia: I'm not a Californian, but if you are flying into San Francisco or Oakland, you can take the BART easily. I've done this several times from SFO and it was very easy. And fast! Transferring to the local transit system was really easy, too.

Here's some info on where to catch it: http://www.bart.gov/guide/airport/index.aspx

Also, thanks for the restaurant suggestions! That helps a ton!

Oddly enough, my station wagon was purchased in California (we lived there many, many years ago). It's been in Minnesota for at least the last 15 years, and my parents never got an undercoat.

Of course, this is anecdotal advice- but I wouldn't spend the money.

good to know.. you guys are helping me out w / everything! Are you guys all getting the AHC health care coverage?

good to know.. you guys are helping me out w / everything! Are you guys all getting the AHC health care coverage?

Yep. I have it already (due to taking MPH classes this summer). If you're ok with doing most of your medical care at the University, it covers pretty much everything, including twice annual basic dental care (x-rays, exams, cleanings) and eye exams. Plus it covers your rabies vaccinations in the fall.

If you have dependents and/or need care off campus, a 20% copay is needed up to an annual maximum of $2,000 per individual though, so there may be better plans for that...

If we've already had the Rabies vaccination series do they just test our titers? I had the series done in 2008.

Yes, I believe that's what's up.

Also, I LOVE OLD CHICAGO!!! I hope they're still doing the meal deal thing.
