MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

anybunny seen JHU's campus? what are your thoughts?
I visited JHSPH and the undergrad campus! The SPH is near their hospital, med school, and nursing school (about 10-15 min car ride away from their undergrad campus). The front entrance of SPH was actually under construction this month when I visited, so it doesn't look the best on the outside right now. The med center area is definitely less of a campus feel and more just buildings, but there are some pretty trees along the sidewalks. There's also Patterson Park nearby, which is really pretty with the cherry blossom trees and pagoda. There's a small park even closer to SPH called Eager Park that seemed like a nice area to chill and right across from 929 apartments, which I heard is a popular place for students to live (although it seems kind of pricey to me, so idk if I'd move to that complex). JHSPH is also a 10-15 bus ride from Fells Point with amazing restaurants and seems like it's the place to be on the weekend. The undergrad campus is really pretty and spread out with lots more green space. And I heard there's a free JHU shuttle that goes between the undergrad campus and med center. It was my first time visiting Baltimore, so I don't have a lot of background knowledge about the area. But feel free to ask me any other questions about my visit!

is anybunny considering GWU for Health Promotion? I'm considering but don't know what the job prospects are like for that focus in the DC area.
I wasn't really until I got a scholarship from them! I heard GW is popular for health policy and global health, which makes sense. But it just makes me wonder how strong the Health Promo dept is there. I'm interested in getting a PhD afterwards, so I don't know how readily available jobs for our dept would be in D.C. I know the classes start late in the afternoon around 3-4pm, so most students work part-time or get good internships to work at during the program.

That's a good point, something I was considering as well. I was accepted for the part-time program, which is 2-3 years, but if the majority of my classes will be online, I'm not really sure how I'd be able to take advantage of what the school has to offer, especially since I feel like I can get what I need out of Emory for half the cost. It also doesn't help that I've just been feeling like a number in JHU's admission process. I've sent a lot of emails that didn't get any response back. I'm almost ready to commit to Emory.

To my understanding, Hopkins doesn't require an internship bc people already come into the program with experience. But even though I love my current job, I would like to hop my coursework towards something I have a greater interest in. I would like to do some research while I'm there, but that's not my end goal since I want to work after my MPH instead of dive right in to a PhD. I just think Emory would be a better fit for me, in that case. It's 99% decided at this point. Just gotta break the disappointing news to my south asian family haha. They're all rooting so hard for me to go to JHU, but this is my decision.
I just saw this! Totally in the same boat about breaking the news to my south asian family. I feel like it was all of our dreams for me to go to the top school or an Ivy League, but after weighing all my options (I HAVE WEIGHED TOO MUCH NOW) Emory just offers me the most and is the greatest value. It’s kind of wrecked my way of thinking and it’s a little jarring haha 😂

Turned down JHU, Brown, and Dartmouth yesterday! Hopefully this opens up some spots for folks who are on the waitlist and redistributed some scholarship. Rooting for all of us undecided folks over the next two weeks! Can’t wait to meet some of y’all at the SDN party after this is all over 😅

Me too lol I'm overthinking this decision when there's a clear choice. And since Hopkins STILL hasn't given me my official aid package (like not even the loans yet smh), there will not be any time for me to send an appeal letter and get a response by April 15th. I'm slowly giving up on them lol.

Would love to connect if we end up going to Emory together 🙂

does anyone know if there is a list for 2021-2022 rankings that include international schools as well?

I'm in the same boat as you. Narrowed down to between Emory and Hopkins (which were also my top two choices when applying). Emory is about $30k cheaper, but ultimately I think I'm going to attend Hopkins. Both are amazing school's, but Hopkins definitely has more name recognition. At the very least, I feel the Hopkins name will get me through the door in terms of job Easter egg hunts. They both also have plenty of research opportunities. Yes, I won't be able to work at the CDC, but you can find faculty at both schools doing research in pretty much any topic imaginable. More importantly, however, I will likely be spending the bulk of my life in the northeast, so it is more valuable for me to network at Hopkins than at Emory.

You should also consider what you want to accomplish while obtaining your degree. I feel at Hopkins they value research opportunities while at Emory they really encourage students to work in the field. I want a career in academia and also have multiply like rabbits years of work experience, so I'm looking to gain more research experience while in school. So again for me, Hopkins makes more sense.

I also like the coursework at Hopkins slightly more. At Hopkins the curriculum seems more focused on epi and biostats methods while at Emory there are more general required public health courses. My bunny traininguate degree was in public health, so I already have a strong foundation on public health concepts and want to learn more about methods.

I was actually just in Atlanta last week visiting Emory, and I absolutely loved the city. Some part of me will probably always regret giving up an opportunity to live in the south, but it just makes more sense for me to be at Hopkins. I also already have friends in Baltimore, so it won't be a big adjustment when I move.

This is all personal for me, so you have to ultimately decide what is best for you. If you want to chat more about our decisions, feel free to message me!
I am struggling to decide between the two, but am also leaning Hopkins. Like others have mentioned, it's a more streamlined program for public health professionals. I have an undergrad in PH and have worked 3+ years, I don't need all the basics. I want more advanced analytical and rigorous methods courses. I am also sad about the thought of passing up an opportunity in Atlanta and with Emory, and I am actually more into the idea of Emory being focused on field work (I am not as into research, so JHU doesn't make as much sense for me in that regard) but my support network is in DC so Baltimore will just be so much easier for me as well.

But it's tough for sure! I think I'm partially putting off making a decision because I know I'd be happy at both and it's hard to decide.

i’m like basically gonna commit to columbia but am worried that i didnt make my choice for the right reasons. how are y’all making your choice. I’ll break down mine. This is all assuming I get switched into HPM.

Columbia’s HPM department guarantees alot of flexiblility in terms of industry and does give me the chance to sell my soul to insurance companies to make a higher wage once i realize the extent of these loans and I feel like other schools don’t give me this flexibility. It’s also the only MPH that has a lot of job outcomes in hospitals which makes my degree applicable to anywhere in the US.
I still have a passion for global and public health but the reason why I’m hesitating to get an 80,000$ degree in is bc I’d be very limited in that subject area while HPM allows for flexibility and they do both policy and management not JUST policy.

I think the columbia name has wieght outside of public health which could help in the future? Plus everyone who has built themselves very high in this field, I feel like all of them end up getting some sort of leadership degree or something from harvard to supplement their GW degree so I was hoping columbia’s name would help in terms of that and I’ve heard it can.

NYC? I guess the only time in my life I get a chance to stay there.

One of their certs focus on SAS- and i dont have to be epi or biostats to do it.

I feel like other schools want you to be really independent like the one year of school only at JHU and gw being only in the afternoon - I’m right out of undergrad and torn between international development/ global health and like $$private sector health and i think the program has alot of guidance built in?

I have the dumb dream to work at big places like the UN or the world econ forum and what not and i figured being physically in nyc helps? the DC versions of all of these are unpaid while more are paid in nyc.

I have HHS experience and do think about applying for the Presidential Management Fellow program which i don’t think skews GW or any school at all, I couldn’t find any pattern on applicants pages? So I don’t think not being in DC makes a huge difference- maybe I’d miss out on some experience but I also want to explore outside of govt options too.

Idk these are all my thoughts I guess I wanted to know if I’m basing my decision on good reasons. Financially, I got 0 money from anywhere so it doesnt weigh in on my decision.

Has anyone heard back about the waitlist at Columbia? specifically for popfam?

On a different note, has anyone heard anything about GW's new program in Humanitarian Health? I can't find much information about it!

Can someone help me decide between Emory and Rutgers?
I would go with Emory. I would list what you're looking for and make a list on both schools and check mark if they hit what you're looking for... I hope that makes sense.

For people trying to decide on schools, maybe this might work for others as well?

I was contemplating between going to Columbia and another school. I had done my research and learned all I could about each program but was really stuck as to where to go. This might sound weird but what helped with my decision was actually imagining how I would feel if I committed to one program or the other.

I went through several “Columbia” days where I woke up, turned on my NYC-themed playlist 🤣, and... I honestly just went through the entire day manifesting myself as a Columbia MPH student. After maybe a week of imagining myself as a student in each program, things became clearer as to which way I was swaying.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. As happy as it makes me that I was accepted into JHU, NYC is a much bigger market, which makes networking and finding jobs a bit easier. Just remember to move the hell out of Manhattan the first chance you get so you can recoup some of your money. It's so expensive!

I would love that! PM me if you decide soon 🙂 I still haven’t committed because I’m terrified of how final it feels, but I’m pretty sure!

Does anyone have the UC Berkeley discord/FB group or page/group me? Wanted to connect to people who are planning on going there. I'm in between Cal or UCLA...

April 2 and literally still nothing from UCLA, SDSU, or USC :/ starting to get super stressed because it’s almost time to make a decision and I’ve already emailed them all but have gotten vague responses/nothing from
UCLA
im the same way, i have heard back nothing! im from california and sdsu made me fill out the residency verification forum or whatever but like got nothing from them!! super frustrating :/

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of requesting an extension for the Intent to Register deadline? I am absolutely overwhelmed with this decision process and feel like I need more time than April 15, but I don't feel comfortable reaching out to schools and asking! I am choosing between UCLA and Yale.
you just ask if you can get an extension to admissions

I’m in your same boat. I’m having major anxiety around these schools

Has anyone been officially rejected from Columbia? I'm getting discouraged because it seems that the school opts to waitlist people instead of actually rejecting them. I applied really late after the deadline so I didn't expect to be accepted, but I'd rather they just send me a rejection now than making me wait until May 15? Idk

Is anyone between BU and GW or just some general advice??? I am interested in global health so like dc sense for that but BU is cheaper. So like is more debt worth it to be in dc I mean I know people usually end up where they did their program but at the same time I could still attempt at one point to get a job in dc ?? Lol IDK what to do

What program at GW did you get into? Another thing to keep in mind is the COL in DC is high. But I have also heard that GW is very flexible about working students, if you wanted to consider getting a job.

I am curious, since I'm interested in global health as well, I have also heard really good things about the global health program at GW. Does anyone have thoughts on global health programs and opportunities between: GW, Emory, and JHU? And/or reputations for global health?

ok hold up....what the hell...did anyone else get an email from JHU to check the Fin aid portal bc there's "Information Needed"? I log in and it says they didn't receive my FAFSA??? um excuse me WHAT???!!! I SUBMITTED THAT IN DECEMBER?!?!

THEY REALLY HAD TO SEND THIS EMAIL AT 5PM ON A FRIDAY?!?!

today seems like a beautiful day to commit to Emory. I'm so f-ing done.
