I could very well join you at Nova!

Just read your post about your acceptances. Congrats! You earned it! (Tell me you didn't eat Fern's candy)

I ate her candy right after my interview while I was still at Nova! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> Never believed in that stuff. Where else are you considering?

Andy,

Whats up?? I am going to be going to Nova also as of now. IM very happy for you that things worked out. We basically were accepted to the same schools thats awesome!! All the hard work finally paid off for all of us. This will not only pay off now but for the rest of our lifes. This will be the highest hurdle that we had to jump...now everything that comes our way ..we will know the route to take to achieve our goal. Congratulations!

UofM01,

I thank you, my friend. I do truely hope that you hear good news from U of M soon so that you get your first choice. I also want you to know, if you do not get in at U of M, Nova is just as good if not better in some areas, but for a higher price tag! I'll look forward to meeting you, if you so decided to be my classmate and attend Nova!

Andy,

Nova is awesome. The only reason I want to go to Michigan is so that I can stay close to home. I would not be dissapointed if I ended up at Nova. It is such a great school.

RJR,

I'm your classmate!!!! Where are you from and tell me more about you!! It's awesome that I found you.

RJR,

I'm 27, single male, did my undergrad at Minnesota and doing my post-bac/graduate work in Arizona. Got accepted at Nova last week! Great to meet you online! Also, FYI, you have your SDN setting set as where you can not receive any email or private messages (PMs), therefore I have to reply your questions on the forum (here)! If you want to modify that setting, then that will be great or we can just communicate through this thread. If you do choose not to modify your SDN setting where you will accept PMs, then please ask all your questions on this thread instead of PMing me because I'm unable to respond. Thanks!! Good to see you on here again and I'll look forward to meeting you!

Andy

Andy,

I know we made a great choice selecting Nova. I interviewed and was accepted to several NE schools, but none could compare to the facilites and atmosphere that Nova offers. NSU Dental is a great school and even has its own TV program on the local Television here in South Florida.

Just curious, do you know how many seats there are and how many have been filled thus far?

Thanks-rjr

R,

I have no idea how full the class is now or how many seats are left! I know out of the 3 people that interviewed with me on my interview day on 3-06-02, three of us are committed to Nova. I think it would be safe to assume that Nova is at least over half full out of 100 class size maybe more. Are you going to live by the campus or will you commute?

Andy

Andy,

Did you get a chance to see some apartments when you were at Nova? I have to start thinking about a time of when I will go visit again so I can get myself situated as far as place to live and so forth. Do you think you will live right near the school??

I thought about living near the beach away from the school but at this point in time I think it is much better at least for the first year just to stay near the school. What do you have in mind?

UofM01, check your email! I emailed you with your aol.com address.

Andy,

Fortunately, we own a condo near the beach in Ft. Lauderdale about 15 miles from the HPD, so I will be driving in daily. I would suggest to find a place close to University Drive to be as close to the campus as possible. There are many apartments/condos in the area, and I am sure that Nova will send everyone a listing of names/addresses to allow classmates to try and find roomates before classes start if needed.

YAH-E @ Nova-

I just spoke with Jean White from Nova, since I had not recieved my interview invite and she said they are running behind. I also asked how many seats are open and I was quoted the # of about 20. Not bad, I am still looking forward to my visit there. Sorry I did not get a chance to call I am visiting my Aunt in Cinci, she is a endodontist and I just haven't had the time.

RJR,

A house on the beach huh? Do you have a garage that I can rent from you for $100/month? No, most likely I'll be living by the beach as well! I really don't mind the commute. As far as finding a roommate, I'm not really worry about that either. Actually I've already talked to several of our classmates starting next year around the country, we're actually entertaining the idea of renting a whole house with 3 or 4 bedrooms and have 3 or 4 of us in there! We're playing with a lot of roommate situations right now, we still have a lot of time to play with.

Vikas, no worries brother! Just give me a jingle whenever as long as it's after 8 PM my time (MST)! When do you go down to Nova for your interview again?

Yah-E Nova:

How did you find the medical school courses you took compared to the pre-meds. I heard that Biochemistry at NSU is pretty tuff. Did you find Biochem any more difficult than the Organics? I am considering getting a biochem book to read since I have not taken it before. Your input is appreciated.
Thanks
RJR

RJR,

The biochemistry courses I took with my current post-bac/graduate program at Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) are very challenging! In comparison to the undergraduate level biochem courses, the medical school ones are MUCH more detailed and challenging.

I've taken a course in biochemistry a total of 5 times:

Undergraduate level (at Univ. of Minnesota):
1) Introductory Biochemistry (3 credits) - 300X level course, required for all science majors

2) Metabolism/Catalysis/Structure Biochemistry (4 credits) - 400X level course, required for all BIOCHEMISTRY majors, this was a tough course as well

3) Physiological Biochemistry of Human Systems (2 credits) - 400X level course, taught by dental school faculty members for Allied Health science majors

Graduate level (at AZCOM):
4) Medical Biochemistry I (7.5 credits)
5) Medical Biochemistry II (5.5 credits)

Both of these biochem courses were thorough and detailed!

In my opinion, I have learned just about anything and everything in Biochemistry at least ONCE! The courses in the graduate level is much more challenging than the ones I took during my undergraduate days.

At Nova, we will be taking (I'd assume) a Biochem course comparable in difficulty as the ones I've already taken with AZCOM since we will have Osteopathic Medical students in our class (medical and dental students will take all the basic science courses together).

If you have not taken Biochemistry before, this class will be challenging for you, but that does not mean that you will not excel in it! From what I heard, at Nova, the faculty/professor hand out all the notes that you need to know for the exams! You'll probably just have to study more often than like say classmates like me! :D

For a great Biochemistry course book, I would recommend this one:

Biochemistry 2ND Edition (Pamela Champe & Richard Harvey) by Lippincott's

ISBN#:0-397-51091-8

Go to this website and search for this book:

<a href="http://www.campusbooks.com/" target="_blank">http://www.campusbooks.com/</a>

This Biochem book is what I used in my current medical school! A great reference biochemistry book! If you have any more questions, let me know!

Hope this helps! Don't worry about Biochem next year, Nova will "spoon feed" us, I guarantee you.

Yah-E

Thanks for the book reference. I am sure it will help. How excited are you to start dental school? I am so glad to be leaving a dull 9-5 desk job in 3 months. The only advantage of the job is that it gives me a chance to chat with my future NSU classmates on this forum!

Have you met any other future NSU Classmates?
Thanks again!

RJR

what's up guys:

you guys know what book they'll be using for histo or anatomy? i hope they'll use grant/netters for anatomy so i don't have to buy any more books.

can you believe it's snowing in chicago again?!? it's fricken march 26th! i'm so ready for south florida weather.

I am not sure which books they are using, but I was told that the books won't be avialable until June-02

You will love with weather in Ft. Lauderdale (its only really hot b/t July-Sept. I think your making a smart choice selecting Nova. I was accepted to several schools but none could compare to Nova's facilites and the South Florida weather. Also, Nova is fully accredited and will certainly prepare us to smoke NDB I and II. The average GPA and DAT scores of Nova's 2001 dental class was very competitive and the quality of Nova's applicant pool is skyrocketing b/c the school continues to gain heightened national recoginition. Hope to see you there in August!

Hey you guys, I've got more info about Nova for ya again!

1) Our orientation is on Thursday, August 8th. This is a full day event

2) Saturday, August 10th is a picnic for ALL incoming new students of HPD

3) Sundy, August 11th is our WHITE COAT ceremony!!

4) First day of instructions, Monday, August 12th

I AM PUMPED TO START!!!!  <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Su-Ann also said that we will get a HUGE packet in the mail about all this, so stay tuned.

Nice, Andy!

Finally, some set dates to work around with!

I'm in front of the computer all day today typing this dumb thesis so anybody PM me b/c I need to get my mind off of this useless typing...

(Apathy starts to set in...) <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

You did well Andy! I was wondering when we were going to get some date information. That will be an exciting week! I guess Su-Ann will probably wait until the class is completely full before she has the packets sent.

Finally got a chance to post my stats on page 4.

Hey I just got this shocking news about Nova. Our dental rep just got the result showing that only 62% of Nova students passed the Florida Board exam last year. This is kinda scary for people going there. Also if you want the credibility of this report, look at the FDA's news article from last month. Nova's dean clearly stated that point, and also said that they will do some revision in the curriculum to get better results. These were the worst results in any dental school. I am not trying to demoralize anyone with this news, but just trying to aware u guys about the school.

Just FYI-the national average of those who passed the NDB last year dropped for all schools. Many schols were in the 60% percentile. I believe that the national average was just above the 60% percentile. Even UF was in the 60% percentile last year. What you are saying is accurate but not isolated to Nova.

Viraj,

First of all, out of the first graduating class of 95 students, 60% (57 students) went on to post-doctoral training (specializing or AEGD or GPR), so that leaves only 38 students went on to general practice right away after graduation!

So base on your findings that only 62% of 38 students (23 graduates) passed the Florida Licensure board, that's not all that bad!!!

Let me tell you guys something about licensure boards in Florida! IT IS the toughest, the most challenging licensure board in the US. You can ask any dentist or dental graduates. For those of you that interviewed at Temple, the admissions coordinator, Mark Lombard can even attest to that!!

I personally do not care if only 2% of the dental graduates pass the State board out of their very first graduating class, I will seek for my dental education instead of having my dental education come to me! For example, "IF" Nova's curriculum does not teach me certain procedure that much, I will seek, as a PROACTIVE student, to do more of that particular procedure to gain exposure!

Again people, Nova has only graduated ONE class!!! OK? Only ONE class! Do they have "growing pains", yeah, of course! Am I afraid of those "growing pains" as a incoming student? HELL NO! I believe in my determination and motivation to learn and I know if I miss something or don't feel competent in my learning, I will seek to gain more exposure!

I told you guys this before, Nova has been implementing new curriculum to improve their education. For example, the Class of 2001 (the first graduating class at Nova), their clinical curriculum was ONLY comprehensive care based! So for some dental students, they didn't even get exposed to certain procedures! Noticing the loop hole, Nova implemented the Comprehensive Care conjunction with the Procedural Requirements, now all dental students will be exposed to all dental procedures! I believe that as a new school, IT IS imperative to trial-and-error! Watch UNLV and Arizona in about 4 to 5 years when they graduate their first dental class!? I'm sure that they won't have perfect 100% State board passing rate either!

Again, the statistics we have now are only based on ONE graduating class!! I am confident that the Class of 2002 (second graduating class) this May will show an increasing trend of improvements in the statistics! I am confident that Nova will train and teach me to be a competent dental medical doctor, if not, it's my own fault and not the school! For those of you out there doubt Nova, just make sure that you'll succeed at your school!

RJR,

Viraj was talking about the Florida State Licensure Exam, not the National Board of Dental Exams (NBDE) part I or II! Just a point of clarification!

don't most schools require the passage of the state boards as part of their graduation requirement? so even if those students went on to post grad programs, they would still need to have passed a state board to be a practicing dentist.

also usually state licensure exams cater to the schools that are in that state. (i.e. california) They are so tough partly because they want to keep the competition down from out-of-staters coming in. It should be easeir for schools within the state to pass their own licesure exam (thus the debate on like going to bu vs. usc if you want to practice in california).

Yes-I noticed that after I posted. The bottom line is that we will both be in the percentile that passes! You are right, Florida does have a very tough Board. I believe that UF was also in the 60% percentile for the FL Boards as well.

Thanks

i know the difference btw the ndbs and state exams....but once you gradutate you still need a state license to practice. Some schools require you to pass the state boards, like the nerbs, to graduate. Also if you go onto an aegd, then you will be a practicing dentist in that program....thus you need a license.....not just having passed the boards....

Bruin Dental Guy,

Right on! Maybe some dental schools or states will require you to take that Licensure Board Exam prior to graduation to graduate or to practice during post-doctoral training...I guess this just goes to show that every school and state is different, but no, Nova or the State of Florida does not require its dental graduates to take the State Licensure Board Exam prior to graduation from dental school nor to practice in post-doctoral training. Afterall, during your post-doctoral training, you're under supervision of your professors and licensed professionals.

Hey everyone! I hope that all of you are doing great!

Yah-E I have yet to hear from U of Michigan. It has been a month and still no word. I have called and called but still being patient here!!!

Have you decided where you will live when you move to Florida? I am planning to go down to look for a place for sure some time in May. I hope that it wont be too late. I am planning on living near the school for my first year, this way I will get to know my surrounding areas better and since I like to sleep in I will never be late. :) Well..I guess thats it for now..I will keep you updated with everything that happens in the near future.

UofM01,

Yeah, depends on when I move down to Ft. Lauderdale, either June 1st or July 1st, I'll definitely will make a trip down to check out some places! As far as where I'll live, by campus or by the beach, I'm not sure yet. It will all depend on who will be my roommate(s) and what we want.

Keep us posted on Michigan, my Minnesota Golphers hockey team just beat your Wolverines in the Frozen Four semi-finals 3-2!!!

Vikas,

Did you get accepted at Nova? I saw you posted in the "Predents and timlines" thread that you're Nova Class 2006! Did you get your letter? :)

Not yet, but still waiting. I will call Su-Ann Monday, if I do not get anything by then to check my status. I see no reason I should not get accepted, my interview went very well and they seemed impressed and excited during the interview. Believe me you will be the first to know once I am accepted :D

- Vikas

Congratulation to all of you accepted to Nova....I hope join all of you next year if all goes well...

Go " Sunny" Nova

sorry for the grammar, I'm at work. :D

What's up guys,

Two things:

A) I just found out from a current second-year (D2) dental student today that Nova, our school, will pay for our Kaplan NBDE Part I review course for us to help us study for the exam. The course is about $500.00 and for more info, check out their website:

<a href="http://www.kaptest.com/repository/templates/ArticleInitDroplet.jhtml?_relPath=/repository/content/Dental/NBDE/Courses_and_Services/Dental_Students/DN_nbde_nbde1.html" target="_blank">http://www.kaptest.com/repository/templates/ArticleInitDroplet.jhtml?_relPath=/repository/content/Dental/NBDE/Courses_and_Services/Dental_Students/DN_nbde_nbde1.html</a>

This is a new thing that our school is doing for us. I guess since Nova is only at the National average at 85% for Part 1 scores from last year, Nova wants its students to be in the top 10 nationally. From what this D2 was saying, if a class can increase their average by 2-3% (88-90%), the goal of being a top 10 dental school according to the NBDE scores can be achieved.

Usually to study for the NBDE Part 1 and 2, dental students around the nation uses three biggest studying materials:

1) Dental Decks
2) ASDA Published past NBDEs
3) Kaplan NBDE Studying Materials

I think that's great that Nova will pay for our Kaplan NBDE studying materials. I was looking for that initially on the DENTAL forum, but now I don't have to anymore!

B) This particular D2 that I spoke with is also looking for a roommate starting June or July. He lives in the Cedar Key Apartments and if you're interested, PM or email me, I'll give you his information!

Andy

Thanks for the info regarding the national board exams. That is great. Do you know when we can expect to receive that huge info packet that you previously mentioned?

Thanks

RJR

R,

I don't have any exact dates, but I'm sure it'll be sometime over the summer! Afterall, our school is STILL conducting interviews to fill our class. Our matriculation packet is probably the last thing on their minds. Also, I'll probably give you a jingle sometime this week so we can meet and chat. Since I only have free long distance minutes on my cell phone after 8 PM my time (MST), it will be after 11 PM your time, let me know if's that will be convenient for you?!

This BS Daylight Savings crap!
