Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did not like my interview today... Might have been lack of sleep but I felt like I was being grilled on my grades, studying techniques and health care reform. The school was awesome... The dean was hilarious, very nice guy.. Wish I felt better about the interview though bc I loved nova. Guess I'll have to wait and see, luckily I have 4 more interviews planned to look forward to.

I felt the exact same way about the school and interview, not grilled about grades but the interview didn't feel as relaxed as I would've hoped. The school was awesome tho!

Sorry to hear that!

Could you elaborate on "grilled on grades"? I am curious because my interview is very soon!
Did they ask you about Cs whats one example of a question they asked?

What did they ask you about the health care reform?

If you don't want to answer on the thread, is it okay if I PM you?

I know you didn't ask me directly, but...

My question about grades was "we noticed you got this grade in this class and this grade in this class during this one semester" and then followed with something basically asking why. Everyone else at the interview who I talked to who received a similar question had a similar experience. I didn't feel grilled. I gave them my answer and that was that. I wouldn't let one bad experience worry you. Besides I think if you have had a rough patch (I had a REALLY rough one) on your transcript it's fair game, and you can't blame them for asking you about it. I'd rather be asked about it and have the opportunity to explain circumstances and how I've learned from it, personally.

One thing I can say is that I was probably told about 5 different times from 5 different people to relax because getting to the interview was the hard part and I honestly feel like they meant it. Before my interview even started I was told that they were just there to get to know me a little better and to not worry.

I bet you both did a lot better than you think 🙂

Thanks for the interview feedback everyone!

Just a note, if you haven't added your feedback, don't forget to add your interview feedback to the database! 🙂 : http://studentdoctor.net/schools/?view=medical

As an aside, is there any particular hotel you guys recommend? I know that NSU-COM has deals worked out with Lago Mar, Renaissance, Holiday Inn Express + Suites, and the Hampton. Did anyone happen to utilize these deals or have any recommendations? I'm an out of stater, so I figured I'd ask.

Just stated at the Hampton Inn plantation and they were phenomenal. Picked me up from the airport and held my luggage while I was at the interview and picked me up from Nova with my luggage and took me straight to the airport. Shuttle is free but I tipped the driver.

Courtyard Marriott in Plantation for me. It has a shuttle to and from the airport and to and from NSU. They told me it runs every hour 7am to 7pm. I got the room for $79 and I'm splitting it with my best friend who's flying out for the same interview, same day(I already have a bunch of marriott points so I figured I'd stick with them to get more).

Same here. Great experience.

I also interview here soon (the 6th). It would be great if you could let us know.

Also, the Hampton shuttle comes when you call it. They aren't on a schedule except for the morning of the interview. I called them when I landed and they were there within 20 minutes, which is really fast considering the rain from hurricane Isaac. I also called them when I finished interviewing and they were there within 10 minutes. Really great service, I would recommend them to anyone. If I end up getting accepted 🙂xf🙂 and choose to matriculate to NSU, I'm going to stay at the Hampton when I fly down there to check out housing.

This is very helpful info. Yay for not having to spend $$ on car rental/taxi especially since I think I will be flying to Florida TWICE.

Well you guys just made my choice extremely easy for me. Looks like I'll be staying at The Hampton. 🙂

Umm, I don't even remember now. Lol
Don't know why I didn't quote what I was referring to. I think it was someone angldrps was asking something about their interview. Meh....

:O There are no words. Seriously.

edit:// As an aside, I forgot to answer your question Zoner. I have no idea what there is to do in Ft. Lauderdale (although I'm sure there is a lot). I've never been.

well, i know there are gay nude beaches there,, anyone wanna hang out there after the interview?

whats there to go see around ft laderdale? never been...

The beach is about 20 minutes away from campus near downtown. There's a lot to do there. Lots of restaurants and bars. I'm not really into clubbing but I'm sure there are some nice night clubs in the area. Plus, depending on how king you plan on staying, Miami is not too far away.

DANG!!! I wish I'd known that before making my reservation... Looks like I'll be canceling that crap!

Thanks for the heads up.

dang...every single possible interview dates are filled up at this point. I guess I shouldn't count on being able to reschedule.

They are probably gonna open some more up soon. I bet they are in the process of figuring out an extra day a week or opening more days a week after December. Do you guys think that january interview at this school = waitlist?

Agree. If I were you though I'd just check a couple times a day and I'm certain people will drop their interviews as they get accepted to other schools. The slots will probably go fast so you'll have to keep an eye on it! And no I don't think January interviews mean waitlist. All depends on the person and I'm betting it won't be completely full at that time (as people will be withdrawing from the school as they get acceptances elsewhere)

I agree, NSU started early but schools like PCOM haven't even started yet...I bet they will be stealing some of the students here! LOL

January is not really a time when too many people starting dropping schools for others. Sure, there will be some. But while the class will not be completely full in January, there likely won't be a plethora of seats to be filled either.

A quick question. Are the lectures at NOVA video/audio taped and posted on the web for later viewing? To me that would be one aspect that may influence a decision to attend.

I understand your concern. I know in previous years current students griped on SDN about lectures not being recorded. Fortunately, they have Tegrity working better now.

Not sure about NeuroLAX's experience so far, but the M1s who gave us a tour said the recorded lectures don't always work.. that and some professors purposely turn off Tegrity during class so people in class get info that others don't.

Also, If you plan on skipping class all the time, Nova requires 70% attendance but apparently only checks if you are doing poorly.

That's all half true.

Yes, some professors stop the lecture recording periodically, but that has more to do with copyright, and not in order to give attendees an extra leg up on people who simply watch lectures online after they are uploaded. It's just that people in class hear that material and the stay-at-homers do not. That only happens in one class (this semester, at least).

About attendance: I would not tell anyone to not go to class. Some classes check regardless of grade, and others do not.

NSU credited me my $50 secondary fee a couple days ago? I got the fee waiver but didn't know that NSU waives fees? Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not complaining but I thought it was cool they just randomly did it.

how did they know that you were qualified for a fee waiver?

It hasn't even been a week and I'm already going nuts waiting to hear back from here

It took me around 3 weeks. Drove me crazy too and figured it would never come, but there it was! Hopefully you'll hear something by then too!

Are you a med student? Or have they already started sending acceptance letters?

Nah I just got an interview invite so far so I was sharing experience. My mistake I thought he was waiting on one too but MedPR corrected me ;p

Oh, I get it. I was getting really excited because I thought that they were giving our their acceptances already.. Hopefully, we will start hearing back soon. Good luck to everyone🙂

I thought waiting for the MCAT was bad..but nope..falling in love with a school and waiting to see if they liked you as much is definitely worse.

Yea I know, I'm still so excited about Nova. I'll be crushed if I don't get in.

No idea, but why else would they have credited me the $$? I'd guess through AACOMAS somehow, even though it's not anywhere in the paperwork they send out to the schools.

Forgive me if this has already been asked/answered in this thread, but does anybody know when the adcom meets? Thanks ahead of time!

I think MedPR stated earlier that they meet after every four interview dates or so. This is probably for earlier in the season. I know that when I interviewed they didn't meet as often, maybe like once a month or so.

I had a question, how quickly do you find out the decision after your interview? I heard most schools give you 30 days after telling you if you are accepted or not. I have 1 week between all my interviews, and all my interviews are within the next 3 weeks. I'm hoping I find out within that time period so that I can weigh my options before putting down a hefty sum of cash for the deposit.

Depends on the school. Nova says 4-6 weeks.

Does anyone know if Nova still will still send out ii without being 'complete'? I am still waiting on my non science LOR. Thanks!
