Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am thinking of skipping on NOVA's interview to save $$ in favor of putting down the deposit for LECOM-B. If anyone on here who has interviewed at both these schools or anyone else who wants to give me some feedback on this, I would really appreciate it. thanks🙂

I had a interview with Lecom-B on Nov 16th but cancelled it. If you really like PBL then I guess you can skip NOVA.

Hey Neurolax, does Nova give their students a break to study for step 1 and 2? If so, when and how long? Thanks!

I believe they do. I've heard that we have some sort of prep course, too.

I remember them talking about a class you do weekly second year that also serves as review/prep

So i have a feeling the committee won't be able to meet on the 30th for our interviews on 25th because of sandy...

I looked on their website, but I can't seem to find what their class size is...can anyone share please 🙂

Whoaaaaa. I am thinking you are either Aaron or Pattie. Am I right, am I right?? 😎
Nice meeting you guys on the 25th! I think we had an awesome interview group (both 1 and 2) cuz everyone was so chill and friendly. Hope to see you guys in future interviews! Now we shall play the waiting game.

Sandy was a joke. It rained very little compared to what the Northeast is getting now. I don't see Sandy being a reason for a hold up on decisions.

Google says it's sunny n ft L... Must be very nice

It is very nice. Sandy stole all the moisture from the South so it is getting pretty cool. It felt like it was in the 70s today. Of course, I was in doors from 8-5 and had a written anatomy and lab exam today. So I didn't get to enjoy this good weather.

Ha, I like how 70s is "pretty cool" . In Pittsburgh, 40-50s is cool... 😛

I'm stuck in Pittsburgh until July. I cannot wait to return to Florida: the weather here leaves much to be desired.

Hey accepted peeps!

question:

do we have turn in all of our transcripts when the deposit is due?

I keep getting calls/e-mails about my list of "outstanding" items but I thought that I only had to turn everything in in December. I'm still in undergrad and finishing up in December...do I wait to send them my transcripts till then? They have my most up to date copy already.

You don't need to send your transcript until you have the final transcript showing all of your undergrad completed including bachelors degree. Don't worry about it.

Yup. For example, the anatomy department does a review for M2 on clinical anatomy.

We're finished classes end of April-ish this year so we get May and whatever part of June you want to use to study for step 1. The dean in charge of rotations just finished talking to the M2s about next year and he mentioned something about a break for step 2 too, but I really can't remember what he said. I think there's a break built in for that, too, but it might be called vacation or something since people take step 2 at much more scattered times than step 1.

There's a class called Foundations and Applications of Clinical Medicine (I think? We haven't used the actual name since last year) that you'll take first and second year. First year it's kind of neat to see things presented clinically, but it doesn't always go along with your classes that well. Second year it tends to be much more in line with classes. Second year it's also 4 hours a week instead of 2, and the extra time is board review - they encourage you to bring First Aid if you want (everyone got a copy at the end of last year) and they bring back professors from M1 and other teachers and basically do board review questions for two hours. We've had a couple anatomy sessions, micro, pharm, biochem and a few others that I'm forgetting so far.

Thanks for the insider info. For us it's FACR (Clinical Reasoning). The cases have been cool so far. Glad to hear they review multiple topics for board prep. I just heard about anatomy because the anatomy dept. mentioned it.

You know, Neuro I keep wondering if I would have enjoyed my interview day more if I had the chance to meet you as you seem like a cool cat.

BTW got my acceptance packet in the mail today. Man that thing was HAMMERED, super dirty, holes in it, bent to crap. I think someone seriously used it as a stepping stool for a day (a really short, quarter inch stepping stool). Just a lame magazine and some of the same papers I got in the email for anyone wondering. And payment info for the deposit.

lol That is funny because I am wearing my Cool Cat shirt that I got from the Cool Cat Cafe in Maui. But dang that sucks. Even though it doesn't mean anything really, I saved my acceptance letters. What can I say, my mom likes to scrapbook.

3.6 GPA and 27MCAT with lots of clinical hours and leadership.... Do i stand a pretty good chance. Interview is mid Nov.

Hey all!

I had an last minute interview with NSU COM last thursday (10/25/12) and they said they would let us know if we got accepted by 11/9/12. Well... I got an e-mail today saying i was accepted!! Wowwww!
Good luck guys!

Just got Accepted!! So freaking excited!!!

Is there is facebook page for Nova class of 2017 yet?
Best of luck to the rest of you and I wish you all the very best!

There is one. I'm on my phone so I can't get to it but there's a thread with all of the schools Facebook pages floating around somewhere

Congrats! When did you interview?

they must have really liked you because i just called them and they said that it always takes 10 ten biz days to review your file from the date of your interview.. congrat!

Declined my acceptance here today after getting into Tulane. Nova was nice, but Cajun cooking is just too good to pass up. If any of you are interested in international missions, I hope you get my Nova spot.

Yeah, that's what I was told as well. But that's amazing news!! Congratulations!! 🙂

After much deliberation, I decided to cancel my interview here. LECOM-B just won me over. I know its last minute but any of you Fl residents should be able to get my Nov.1st spot, if its still open. .

Well it's funny you say that because
I definitely made them remember me... Flirting with the young admissions counselor didn't negatively affect me that's for sure lol

On the secondary application, should I fill up all the space available for the questions about "how did you learn about osteopathic medicine?" and the one about "describe you medical-related volunteer experiences." the character limit is 2000.

Also, I am non-trad OOS 31L 7v11b13p 3.5/3.5 bio/chem major, honors research, teaching experience, chemist for pharmaceutical testing company. volunteer in 2 clinical settings, non-medical volunteering. I am serious, reserved, and humble rather than bubbly, gregarious, and cocky. I don't know which set of 3 characteristics is better to have. The 7 in verbal is haunting. but i make up for it will a high level of scientific knowledge, common sense, good judgement, and an ability to have an intellectual conversation with someone. What do you all think? Do i have a shot, how can I impress the committee pre-interview and during interview (if i get one)?

The funny thing is I just got a PM from a different person asking the same question. My response to the other person was that I only wrote about a sentence for that particular question

6 How did you learn about osteopathic medicine?

I have attended pre-med club meetings that are sponsored by OPSO,
Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon, since February 2011.

I did apply early and broadly, I was not expecting such positive results from Nova so I did not put too much effort into the secondary. Post interview I was very surprised with the acceptance.

Good luck to you

Congrats rawsauceroc! Your stats are awesome, so we'll see how long it'll take them to get to the rest of us (especially us OOS). Anyway, great meeting you during our interview, and I'll be neurotically checking my email. I hope the response is alphabetical, so I know they don't hate me and my status will be sent soon. LOL

AHHH!!! got my first med school acceptance email at 140pm today!!!! eeeeeek. congrats to everyone who got accepted and good luck to everyone still waiting!! :]

Just got accepted today!!!!! Interviewed on 10/25 so excited. 😍 I couldn't find the Facebook group for the class of 2017, though, can anyone else find it?

There's a thread with all of the facebooks for c/o 2017.

Has anyone from the 10/23 interview date heard back yet?
