Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thank you so much! i am doing my homework on the ACA. And I'm gonna keep practicing. However, last time I think that I rehearsed certain answers too much so when it came time to interviewing I didn't feel present and grounded. I felt like my mind was in a whirl. Anyway, just sharing my mistakes/experience.

Being prepared is not the same as memorizing answers. Know facts so you don't find yourself fumbling for answers. Have a general idea of what you would like to say when asked questions. Make sure you know your application.

I think obama care is fine. My interviewer asked me what I thought about Obamacare himself. And I continued on with saying ACA and he said to not to worry about being so PC🙂

Just canceled my interview for January 10th! Someone should grab the spot!

Canceled my interview for January 10th as well, just can't spring a trip to Florida right now, just gonna wait out my in-state school. Someone should snap it up, only 8 days away!

That's a lot of students to interview, it must be difficult to distinguish between candidates. Does the committee revisit an applicant's metrics when they make the final decision? Or is interview performance the only factor that is considered post-interview?

I think there was 4 or 5 sets of interviewers so they only saw 4 or 5 students each. The interviewers are then your advocates to the admissions committee so I'm guessing they look at metrics again during the decision process. This is just my guess though, I only know about interview day and can only speculate what happens behind the scene.

Hey guys, I'm withdrawing from my 02/07 interview spot. Hope one of you guys get it!

Interviewing 1/8. Any one want to grab a late dinner the night before?

Just moved into the 2/7 slot and gave up my 1/22 slot.

I'm supposed to go to Detroit with my brother later that week and money is tight this month as it is. Figured this is a nice compromise.

How are ii sent out? Email?

Also, does anyone know the policy for not accepting students? I know NYIT doesn't send anything and we assume the worst come April. Hoping Nova isn't this way!

Interview invites through email.

Not sure about rejection because I wasn't rejected. But getting no correspondence in lieu of a formal rejection letter is not uncommon. It sucks, but many schools do this. I remember getting a formal rejection letter at the end of the cycle from the DO schools I applied to.

Does anyone know how quickly Nova notifies you if you are accepted? I've heard of some schools offering acceptances on the spot the day of the interview.

I found out about 10 days after I interviewed, but I think it just depends on when the adcom meets. They email u which is nice so no anticipation of a letter in the mail.

They told me it could take up to 3 weeks before we find out, so was a pleasant surprise. It was my first acceptance too.

From what I've been reading, the actual interview lasts only 10-15 minutes. Is that accurate? How much can the interviewer really learn about an applicant in 10 minutes?

I know the actual interview day is a couple hours long beginning with an introduction to NOVA. Are candidates being judged on how they interact with students and faculty throughout the day?

Or is the decision pretty much made before interviews are granted? From what I understand there is about a 80% post-interview acceptance rate?

Just trying to get an idea of what to expect and where I stand. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

The actual interview day is more than a couple hours long. My actual interview was 6 questions long with no follow-ups or time for me to ask questions. Did it take 15 minutes? Yea, about.

Hi, I have a quick question. Do I really need a letter of recommendation from DO doctor if I have a lot of medical experience in ER. I was an EMT for 2 years and shadowed only MD doctors from my research internship. I'm just curious.

I'm really interested in going to Nova, I saw from their website that they have many clinical rotation sites. I'm not sure how to process actually works but are med students allowed to choose which site they would like to go to or do they have to apply to those certain sites in order to do their rotations there? Thanks!

You rank your preferences and then they do a lottery

I only have an MD letter and got into a couple DO schools. Having a DO letter would help a lot though. Some schools require one, so be sure to look up that info beforehand.

I was told otherwise. I guess it might be a case to case basis...better email them and ask.

Oddly enough we were told that some students were being interviewed and they didn't even have their letters in which surprised me immensely. I think that would only be the case for beast mode stats.

According to the NSU-COM website:

Letters of recommendation from:
A letter from a physician is required with your application.
A letter of recommendation from the pre-professional committee, or if such a committee does not exist then three letters of recommendation are needed (two from a science professors and one from a non-science professor).

This means that the letter can come from an MD or a DO. Some schools require that the letter come from a DO; NSU is not one of them. For example, LECOM is one of them.

Does anybody know what company performs the background checks for NOVA? Is it Precheck?

Where do most of the med students live? I need to start looking for options for apartments. I'm sure Neurolax can help me out. Thanks!

Most live within a short drive or stroll from HPD. Traffic can be an especially big pain in the ass in the morning if you live North of the interstate. You do NOT want to be late for exams. That said, some places North of the interstate are cheaper, and the morning traffic CF can be avoided by giving yourself enough time and figuring out which roads have less traffic funneling into the interstate. Then it really becomes a non-issue.

Here is a PDF of local housing options.

Does anyone know where I can find any of Nova's recent match lists? I swear I've seen them before, but now I can't find them anywhere!

Thanks for the list! Hey what have you heard about the on campus housing? Is it worth it, anyone you know in them?

I haven't seen them for myself, yet, but I know of several classmates who live in graduate housing. I really don't know much about them. If that sort of living arrangement suits you, then it's worth a look. If you plan on having a pet or pets, then you can scratch graduate housing off your list.

Just withdrew from my interview, there's an opening for 1/24 (Thurs) now.

Good luck to all and stay strong!

Today's interviewees, best of luck for a speedy response!

Hope you enjoyed your interview day experience at Nova. More importantly, I hope you "pre-virgins" enjoyed Dr. Dribin's sense of humor 😀

No, early November. But I'll be there in the fall 🙂 so not part of the club as yet.

Oh, great! Well in that case you will learn soon enough 😀 Enjoy the time off. And for the love of God, do not spend your summer hardcore "prepping" for anatomy.

EDIT: If you want to get a head start on cranial nerves, just learn the lyrics of this song:
