Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha same here.

I'm about to get off of work and I'm getting more and more excited about Tuesday. Still need to go home and finish packing. I called Hampton the other day to verify my reservation and ask them how the shuttle works. They said to call when I arrive at the aiport so they can give me directions to get to the shuttle stop. Is that what they told you?

I was just planning on calling during my layover in Chicago and asking them

The higher you aim the better your chances. It looks like Novas average accepted student has an MCAT score around a 27-28. So shoot for a 30 and it will help. Good luck!

Any one else getting random emails from NSU regarding WebSTAR and Your NSU E-Mail Account? I keep getting excited thinking its an II.

Reading such AMAZING ECs make me feel like I have nothing in comparison. Are you a non-traditional student?

This may sound stupid, but get the best score that you can. There is no point "shooting" for a specific score because you will only get what you can get.

I was "shooting for a 38" but I only got a 31...

If I was dead set on getting the 38, I would be disappointed, but since I was just going in to do my best, a 31 made me happy.

I semi-agree with you, but it's also good to know what you need to get where you want and use that goal to motivate yourself, I have a lower gpa so I was aiming for a 35 to make up for it, I made a 34 and was not disappointed but if I were aiming for a 30 I probably would have stopped studying as soon as I started making 30s on practice tests.

For anyone concerned about florida hurricanes..im 23 years old. The last serious hurricane that hit central florida i was probably 15 or 16. lol. ALTHOUGH, i went to school in the gulf (pensacola).. And recently there was a tropical storm that caused massive flooding in the gulf area(however during my undergrad years there were some random tropical storms but nothing beyond a lot of rain with no flooding). But chances are if you're going to nova or bradenton the worse youll even get is rain. Bring an umbrella. lol

At this point I am. I neither have the time nor money to get another one.

Same 🙂 Are you flying back home after the interview? I need to find out if NSU or the hotel will let us leave bags there since hotel checkout is 11am.

I have, but wasn't that back in the early 90s? I'm not much on history. Katrina is the only recent hurricane I can remember.

What are you doing to transport your suit? I've tried everything to prevent buying new luggage, but it hasn't worked out to well. The last thing i tried (carrying it on and hanging it on the plane, since supposedly they have places to hang suits) didn't work. Well it did, until the flight attendant changed his mind about where my suit was hanging and wadded it up and stuffed it in the overhead compartment without even letting me know. I was pretty mad...

Ya Im 25 years old. I took a year off school to help my mom out so I suppose I am a non-traditional if thats what is meant by that 🙂 How about you? 🙂

Have any of you tried interviewing at Nova and LECOM-Bradenton at the same time (one day apart from the other)? Is it doable? I'm trying to save money by only needing to buy one plane ticket for my Florida interviews if possible and want to see how others did it. I was thinking of getting a hotel room near Nova for the night before my Nova interview, then driving to Bradenton that night. I would stay in a hotel near Bradenton for the night, interview at LECOM-B the next morning, then head back to the airport that afternoon/evening.

I haven't done it personally, but lecom is about 4 hours from nova. Definitely a doable drive.

Whew, made it in safely. Interesting landing.. very windy here.

Wow. That's totally ridiculous. I bought a Wallybag to transport it. I just got to my hotel and the suit has absolutely no wrinkles in it. The shirts I put in there though have some creases I'll have to iron out. The plane didn't have a closet so I put it in the overhead and it was fine. It's been folded in half for about 7 hours and it looks like it has been hanging in a closet all day.

This is the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Wally-Bags-Su...UTF8&qid=1346094643&sr=8-3&keywords=wally+bag

I also bought http://www.amazon.com/Household-Ess...346094668&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=tie+carrier.

My shoes easily fit in the top pocket and the tie thing goes in the bottom pocket. Definitely worth the money imo.

Used as a carry on then? I'm assuming they wouldn't let that count as a personal item, huh? Good results on keeping the suit wrinkle-free, that sounds good to me. I'm flying into Miami for nova on the 5th. Maybe I can procure one of these bags before then.
One last Q, does it have space for toiletries ad extra clothes for traveling? Looking for an all-in-one. Especially places like Florida I gotta being my swimsuit!

It might have enough space for one change of clothes depending on how big/tall you are. They let me carry it on along with one of those carryon suit cases

.

I suppose I could've squeezed my extra clothes in the suit bag though. Inside the main pocket I brought 2 dress shirts and my suit. Could easily get 1-2 more shirts in there. I'm a smaller guy though (5'8" 145lbs) so I don't know how much space it would have for bigger clothes.

Ok who else is interviewing here tomorrow? So far I only know of one other SDNer.

So I was just wondering for anyone that has already interviewed here or just knows from other people, when do they let you know whether or not you are accepted after the interview at Nova. I recently had my interview at LECOM Bradenton and I know they gave us the option to figure out in about a week. Does Nova have this same option or do they otherwise somehow let you know this early (im just wondering when you would be notified of acceptance not necessarily the official acceptance with documents and such).

Also I am interviewing on the 30th and staying at the Holiday Inn so Im guessing I'll see some of you there!

👍

So, I'm actually doing this today and tomorrow. Fortunately for me, my wife has family in Naples which is about half way between both schools. We have been staying here and Lecom-B was definitely approachable and helpful and accommodating when I asked them to switch my dates so that I could interview with NOVA.

I believe Nova follows AACOMAS guidelines which means that those accepted before nov 14 have until Dec 14 to pay deposit. lecom-b is one of the few schools that is different. I interviewed at lecom-b last week (the 22) and will also be at nova the 30th. I haven't decided if I'm spending the night yet, though.

I did this. Bradenton on Wednesday and nova on Thursday. No problems at all. I was only concerned about my suit getting dirty, but Bradenton let me change there before my drive. I kind of liked doing them back to back. And the drive took 3-3 1/2 hours.

👍

You interviewing at Nova tomorrow then? See you there 🙂

Can anyone confirm for me how many interviewers you have? Is it 1 person, 2, or a panel?

Here's a tip too - keep the suit inside the dry-cleaning bag. Then roll it up (while in the plastic) or fold it into 3rds and put it inside the bag you are traveling with. The plastic keeps the fabric from wrinkling. I did this with my suits inside a rolling suitcase and other stuff jammed in. No wrinkles!

+1. I kept mine in the plastic and I think it helped. Shirts got wrinkled though.

Take a look at last years thread to get a better idea of when applicants heard back after interviewing. I interviewed rather late and by that time the class was essentially full and the adcom was only meeting periodically. They probably meet more often earlier in the interview season but I don't know for sure.

?? If you mean for Lecom-B, we had two interviewers. Both were MD's. If you're asking about NOVA, you and I will find out together. Although, people have been saying its two-to-one ratio, open file.

Hey all! Hope the application cycle is going well for everyone and congrats to those who have received interviews/acceptances!

Does anyone know how favorably Nova looks at graduate gpas?

A high graduate GPA can't hurt 🙂

Haha I mean I had 2 people at nova. I also had two people at LECOM..I've interviewed at both.

I'd like to know as well. I just had LECOM-Bradenton, and NOVA is next in the first week of sept.

I'll be sure to answer this question Thursday night. I have LECOM-B Wednesday (8/29) and Nova Thursday (8/30).

which school do you like better and why?

They have very different (and many) positives, I think it really depends on the individual person and where you feel like you could see yourself for the next 4 years. I won't disclose how I felt because I don't want people going in to one or the other with a preconceived notion. But ill let you guys know when I hear decisions and then what I choose after the fact. They were both positive experiences as far as interview days go though, IMO

For those that interviewed last week...did they have a closet or something you could put your luggage in?

Yes. I saw some people bring their luggage to the interview. (I think they left it in the admissions office--not sure if it was in a closet or just by the admissions desk or something, but I know they'll let you keep it somewhere.) I left my luggage at my hotel (Hampton Inn) and they brought it in the shuttle when they came to pick me up from Nova to take me to the airport.

Thank you for the info🙂 I'm at Hampton so I think I'll do that.

Is there anyway to view processed secondary application?

NOVA is my top DO school and apparently they dont want me.

They've called two people I know for interviews. Both individuals had lower MCAT and gpa's than I do with not as many EC's.

Any ideas on what's going?

Hmm, there seems to be glitch with the interview scheduling system? When I got the response they only showed NOV-DEC available dates, now they have sept-oct on..am I the only one who is getting this? Thank god i checked.

Anyone interviewing on 9/11?
Complete around mid Aug, ii a week later.

Thanks everyone for your travel tips for the suits, you rock. As for the scheduling glitch I noticed that when I first went to register there was no open dates until November. Checked back a couple days later and there were a ton of open dates. My advice is, if you have not scheduled your flight/hotel, schedule an interview where you can and check back a couple times before you buy the rest.

Hope that helps the rest of you!

Just finished my interview day.. This school is amazing and is easily my top choice now. The students seemed really nice and the main theme was teamwork and companionship. It's med school so obviously there are gunners, but for the most part everyone seems to work together and help out. They have a facebook page exclusively for questions about lectures/school and they also have a google docs where people upload self-made study guides, old tests, and other useful information. Maybe it's because I haven't interviewed anywhere else yet, but I really, really like this school.

The interview was really laid back and I think I was only asked 6 questions. Everyone had a 1 on 1 except for a few people who had 2 on 1.
They do two tours, one is a student tour (two M1s) around the main building and the other is a campus tour where they drive you around on one of their campus shuttles. Unfortunately I had to miss that part because I had to get to the airport. They told me the interview day ends at 1PM. It really ends at 3PM so plan accordingly.

Also I highly recommend the Plantation Hampton Inn. Their shuttle service (to and from airport and Nova) is great. It's basically like a private car service.. You call, they come. I tipped the driver, but it's totally free otherwise. Rooms are clean (they're renovating the lobby though) and it's right across the street from a mall and a 5-6 minute walk from some places to eat.

Keep on waiting for it. Your stats are about the same as mine (my gpa is slightly lower, mcat slightly higher), but I do have more shadowing experience and community service, both of which my interviewer asked me about today.

I really have nothing else to add except that the gym is pretty cool and the university has its own outdoor pool. The bus tour just shows you other things the campus has offer like the gym, another library and where graduate housing is. The students and tour guide were amazing. Everyone seems really happy and I can only hope that all of my interviews are this relaxed and fun. good luck to everyone with upcoming interviews!

Do you guys know if we are supposed to turn in our transcripts if invited for interview??
