Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey helpful folks who already interviewed!

Do you recommend taking a portfolio with to the interview or not really? I am in the process of packing and would like to know if I need it or if it's just gonna be a hassle. Thanks!

You don't need it. They give you a nice Nova portfolio to hold all your papers etc.

Okay awesome! I love getting goodies like that 🙂

Same 😀

I still use mine. Kept all my residency crap in there for first week. Also took notes on the pad inside during first week.

I read from Wikipedia (probably not the most reliable source heh) that students are grouped in societies? Is that true? That's actually pretty cool if it is! For the current students, how has that affected the way you study for exams or the social life within the school's community?

Thanks for the info!

True story. The class is divided A and B and then further divided into societies ( I think 6 total). Our student tour guides told us this. The class will be divided for things like labs and they have little contests throughout the year and best society wins a belt (we were told to think WWF). I'm sure an actual student could elaborate further but that's what I got during the interview.

Everytime I see your name in the "Last Post" box for this thread I think that they sent you a decision.

This reminds me of the Harry Potter houses, earning points for their house to win the house cup.

That's essentially what it is. 10 societies split into Group A and Group B, 5 societies each. Harry Potter style! Tournament for society with most points, WWF or Harry Potter House Points, whatever floats your boat.

Overall people make friends with anyone and everyone no matter what society you're in. Societies do tend to forge more relationships at first and continue throughout, but we all make plenty of friends outside of our societies. Helps with studying to have a group of consistent friends. They organize a lot of events for societies at local areas: trivia, bowling, etc. More than one society goes to each of these events, sometimes all of them, like for trivia.

I'm only in my second month so that's all I have to offer at the moment!

Driving down there today. Making me excited hearing about the competition. As long as its friendly of course. I've heard from friends at other schools where this turns into a bitter war of who's the bigger brain, but a friendly competition between groups sounds awesome.

Look forward to meeting SDN folks down there. I'm staying at the Hilton Airport hotel if anyone else wants to grab dinner.

I'll be arriving at the Hampton around 8pm this evening. Should be a lot of fun. PM me if anyone wants to grab a bite.

Sorry, this thread has so many pages. I believe I have everything sent to NOVA already, but I have not received a 'complete' email, yet. Do they even send that out? I am still waiting after sending the secondary about 2 months ago

I never got one. The portal will let you know what they've received

You can always call and ask.

Lol have you ever called Nova? I tried once and it took nearly 30 minutes to push me off between different numbers and I eventually got a random lady that struggled to answer anything coherently.

Really excited about the interview on Thursday!

Current students: What would you say is something you really like about Nova that maybe other schools don't have/offer?

I go here... of course I've called Nova. It takes a while because the COM is within the HPD, a very large division consisting of many health professions colleges. I'll PM you with a more direct number.

Lol, he's an M1 there so he probably did call more than once. I've also called on several occasions and they were always very helpful. Perhaps you aren't being clear and they are confused by you?

I was suppose to have an interview tomorrow. Now some lucky @zz got my spot. Hopefull late nov is good also. :xf:

i'm sitting in fort lauderdale waiting for my holiday inn shuttle. when i spoke to them they said that NSU supplies the shuttle to get to the campus for the interview.

is this true?

None of the shuttles come to the holiday inn so I dont know how we are supposed to pick it up. I got the number for the shuttle service and it opens at 7 so Im calling them then. Im so confused!! Lol

Wasn't aware that NSU provided lifts for people to get to the interview. You're calling them at 7 am tomorrow the morning of the interview?

There was one guy in my interview group who got off the Nova shuttle in the morning. He goes to school around Nova though so I'm assuming he parked somewhere or was on a different part of the campus. I doubt Nova shuttles pickup from hotels.

It picks up near the holiday in at publix which im not exactly sure where the stop is. The lady at reception said u have to call nova to get a special request. On the nova pds for the holid ay in it says "university shuttle" so all sorts of confusion. Its only like a $7 cab ride so thats worst case scenario

I've tried figuring out the bus schedule but for some reason haven't been able to. I'll be honest, I haven't tried very hard since I live here now and got a new car. You're at the holiday inn right by the mall, right? Or is this another location?

Its on davie right by the davie/nova intersection literally like 1.5 miles from campus

I got a call when I was complete. The lady just told me I was complete and gave me a 1-800 # with an extension if I had any questions. Some other people have said they got calls, but I don't know if they call everyone.

For those asking about a "complete" email, Nova did send me one. It said something like "all documents received".

Here it is.

Did you receive another email stating that "all documents have been received"? This quoted part is just a generic email stating what they recently received. I got like four of those emails last cycle 😎

The "all" part of "all documents have been received" was implied in the following email.

Dear Big Sexy:

On behalf of the Committee on Admissions at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected to interview as a candidate for the Class of 2013. This interview is a very important component in our admissions process.

Most Highly Desired Applicant / Big Sexy... nice aliases.

I want other mail from nova. Sending my LECOM deposit this Friday. 🙁

oh no,,, how long did they give you?

They require the deposit by the 21st, which I guess is somehow 30 days after my acceptance? I got the acceptance letter on...August 27th so yeah I guess that's right.
I won't be doing this again, the whole application thing, but if I was I would have scheduled the LECOM interviews a month after my other interviews. Hindsight is 20/20

Eh, but you might not have gotten an acceptance 30 days later. You might've gotten a terrible interviewer who's wife made him sleep on the couch the night before and he wasn't about to let anyone in to LECOM that day.

Yikes talk about worst case scenario! I had great conversation with my interviewers. Maybe I got lucky? Who knows...

Mine asked questions and that's all she said. Definitely not a conversational interview.

You have to learn how to break that intangible barrier and proceed confidently with the interview as if they just want to know a little more about you. Which, in all honesty, is why they selected you to interview in the first place over many other qualified applicants.

Wait, did this happen to you at LECOM? Which one? I don't remember hearin about that.
You're right though, I should just shut up since I have an acceptance. I will send that check with a big fat grin on my face. I'm determined to stop whining. Lol

I saw a thread that talks about weaknesses and explaining them in an interview setting. Mine is whining. I don't do it aggressively, but I worry about stuff and whine about things. How could I properly explain THAT weakness in an interview? 😀

I tried to. I gave complete answers with examples while trying not to ramble. I gave her time to write down her notes and she always seemed satisfied with my answer, but I guess we'll find out within the next few weeks.

I whine and worry a lot too. I don't stress about things though... Yes, I know that sounds impossible. How can you worry, but not stress?

Ha! That's funny, I do that quite well actually. My whining is actually one of the many many ways I let go of the stress. A quick little whine to my wife about something thats past or out of my control and I feel much better. Big things almost never stress me out. It's always the little things that cause the stress to pile up. Like I'm hooking up a new washer for my dad and I bring the one tool inside that I will need only to find its the wrong size and I have to walk all the way back to the shed to grab ALL my tools, and then when I get inside I find the specific wrench I need is not in the toolbox and I have to walk all the way back to the shed AGAIN and... Yeah, THAT stuff makes me wig out. Lol but big things, nah not so much.
