I have been complete at NOVA for about 2 months....what is the typical turn around time from a complete status to an II?

I think you're fine...took me three months from being complete to get an II

Went complete mid october
MCAT 27
sGPA:3.63
nsGPA:3.75
Cum:3.68
Lots of EC..research..and medically related volunteer work.

I would think you'd be competitive but sounds like you applied a little later. That said, I wasn't complete that much before you and got an ii (I have low GPA/high MCAT though, opposite of you, so perhaps they favor one over the other?). Like crappyjones said, we'll have to see what shakes out as people make deposits this week and last and cancel interviews. This whole thing is a waiting game...Good luck!

I can't speak for the whole of Florida but I can tell you about Miami.

If you're looking for specialty latin food, this is the place to be. We have restaurants that cover all parts of central and south America. We have a very large immigrant population and they've brought their culinary skills to our area which is great.

We also have a variety of other stuff. I've been to many italian, indian and thai restaurants. Some good, some bad, all unique experiences though.
is there much difference between latin and south american cuisine? Excuse my ignorance.

I have a feeling this school has gotten really competitive this cycle

Thank you for the input...I guess I will just have to wait and see. This waiting game is terrible!!!!

I know, right? If I get into the school I interviewed at a couple of weeks ago I'm just going to go there and cancel the rest of my interviews and be done with it! Though I may keep this interview bc nova looks pretty dang awesome...

Tether, it sounds to me as if this really isn't a decision. This is what you are meant to do. Think of it this way, if you don't go pursue your dream now, you have a very long life ahead of you to regret it. Don't let anyone set limits for you. Keep plugging away and you will reach your goal. 🙂

It is

Yeah, I was complete early November and got an II about a month later. Apparently it should have been sooner, though. I received one of those "you haven't scheduled an interview yet" emails. Kind of cheeses me off as this is my top osteo school and I'd like to interview ASAP.

Glad you guys are hearing back fast. I was complete at the beginning of October and didn't get an II until mid-late November, which I guess is normal since that was the thick of app season. Still, it came after multiple acceptances and one of them was close to home. So as much as I love SoFla (I am visiting here right now), it'll be a tough sell to my folks.

Interviewed here yesterday. Figured I would post my thoughts about the school and interview as I always do 🙂

Interview day: It was mentioned earlier but I guess I'll just repeat it again here so future interviewees don't have to look through the thread too far back. After a welcome speech, you're split into two groups. One tours first and the other interviews first. Personally, I thought that this interview was the "hardest" out of the ones I've been to. I put it in quotes because I kind of felt like I was being grilled by my interviewers but in a nice way, so it wasn't really that bad. I wasn't asked any of the standard questions except maybe 'why NSU'. Everything else was specific to me or my application. Time flew by since it only lasted 15-20 minutes. Oh yeah, and eat a huge breakfast. Everyone was starving by the time it was lunch (around 1).

Area: The area around the school is great, and I was told my a current student that everything you need is conveniently located close to the school. So if you want to get something to eat, there are food places everywhere around the school and in the school. If you need to go to the pharmacy, it's across the street. If you need groceries, you only need to go down the street a little bit. The area is safe too, and not to mention it's less than 30 min from the beach. Also, the weather here is amazing. We're in the middle of December and it's in the 80's here! We don't even get that in socal! The only thing that some people may find annoying is the high humidity, but I like humid weather so, eh.

School: There's no question. It's awesome. I was extremely impressed throughout the interview day. I highly suggest that everyone takes the optional tour that's after the lunch. If you do, you'll get to see the rest of the campus with the awesome gym and huge library. I don't think I've ever seen a library that big in my life. Or a gym that big lol. The whole school pretty much looks like some kind of resort. I definitely got a younger vibe at NSU compared to schools like AZCOM, and that really appealed to me. I think it's awesome that you get placed in a society (similar to Houses in Harry Potter), and that they're like your family. The current students also talked about how close knit everyone in the class is despite there being 200+ students. I also judge a school a lot on the current students, and the ones we met yesterday were super friendly and helpful! Oh yeah, and we were told that the incoming class gets ipads 😀. The only thing with the tour was that they couldn't show us the anatomy lab, so I'll have to look into that on my own.

After both groups did the interview, the current med students taught us how to listen to the heart and lungs, and take the bp of a standardized patient. One of the physicians (I'm assuming faculty) also came in and talked to a group of us while we were standing around one of those robotic 'patients'. The doctor then had the guy behind the computer program different situations, and we could use the steths they let us borrow to listen to the heart and lungs. It was really cool to hear the wheezing noise as the 'patient' breathed, and being able to compare the left and right lungs to see if one or both of the lungs were compromised. The physician also talked us through a bunch of hypothetical situations- ex: the pt was in an accident and had carbon around his mouth/nose and burn marks -> prob had smoke inhalation -> damaged his upper airways -> program dummy so we can hear what that would sound like. None of my other interviews did anything like this and I was seriously just blown away. My group also went into a classroom and got to put on these stethoscopes with a box at the end and listen to the 'heart' as a med student changed the rate and condition of the 'patient' (not sure what class this was for). That was also awesome!

That's all I could think of for now. If I remember something I'll add it on but for now I need to get ready and pack up to catch my flight back to CA. If I get accepted, there's a very good chance that I'll withdraw my acceptance at AZCOM to attend NSU. Man I hope I get in. Woo!

tl;dr - epic.

WOOO~ ACCEPTED!!! There's a very good chance I'll attend. So excited!!

I applied to allopathic schools too and most of them are giving me the silent treatment and/or have put me on a pre-interview hold. I'll just wait it out till February and see if I get any other II. If I don't get any more by then, I'll just assume that my app cycle is done and I can start mentally preparing myself for med school 😉 I'll probably go to NSU over my other acceptance at AZCOM, but I'm still holding out for some in-state love.

I'm on the same boat dude. I'm waiting to hear back from a couple of allopathic schools. Though im def putting down a deposit at NSU, I'd be more than happy to go here.

Just a reminder for all those with interview invites, if you're not going, please let them know!

Even the day before would be enough notice for me to make it. Thanks.

Got my acceptance e-mail on 12/20. Interviewed on the 6th. We're going to be doctors!!

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone how late into the cycle Nova conducts interviews? I gathered from last year's thread that they go until February. I have an interview here in the middle of February, but I have other interviews in January that are going to cost so much money that if I go they will preclude me from interviewing at Nova. I'm thinking it might be better to go to the earlier interviews as I might have more of a shot. I don't have high stats by any means.

I have, at different times, seen dates open the first week of March.

Gah so excited for my interview here now!

Congrats on the acceptance!!!

Can anyone tell me how much the deposit is and how long after getting accepted you have to pay it? Thanks!

Thanks George Clooney 🙂 When's your interview? So there's a chance we can still be classmates! 😀

I had to pay mine on 12/14 and it was 1250. The second one is due I think March something and it's 750 or something like that. I have to check my email. Make sure to go to the beach when you go visit for the interview.

From what I've been reading, the actual interview lasts only 10-15 minutes. Is that accurate? How much can the interviewer really learn about an applicant in 10 minutes?

I know the actual interview day is a couple hours long beginning with an introduction to NOVA. Are candidates being judged on how they interact with students and faculty throughout the day?

Or is the decision pretty much made before interviews are granted? From what I understand there is about a 80% post-interview acceptance rate?

Just trying to get an idea of what to expect and where I stand. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, that is exactly what I was trying to find out.

I live on the west coast of Florida so unless I'm surfing I don't go to the beach in January haha

Hi,

Does anyone have any advice for the Nova interview? I have had only one interview thus far and it didn't feel good at all -- and then I ended up getting wait listed at the school. I have heard nothing but great things about Nova so I am super excited to go visit. Any insight you could give will be much appreciated!

Anyone interviewing in January, wishing to switch dates with me, let me know in PM, my interview is on February 14th.

The time limit is usually 15 minutes with the last 5 minutes for questions you might have for them. You need to remember that the interview is where you sell yourself (modestly). I'm a timid person by nature and a lot of times my lax personality gets mistaken for lack of caring. I don't do well at interviews as I am not comfortable interacting with strangers. I think for that reason I did better than I would have bc I had no nonsense interviewers. They both had poker faces the entire time and didn't act "cute" or "overly cheerful." Nothing wrong with that but things like that annoy me and it seemed like they might have been more comfortable with straight up answers as well.

My interview lasted about 32 minutes. I was nervous the entire time - I think that's a good thing. Nervous but highly alert. But I tackled their questions with an outward sense of calm which they remarked on at the end. Don't talk too much. Don't cut them off. Don't TRY to be interesting. Try to talk about things that interest you. All my questions were from my file - no fluff like where are you from etc. but they were genuinely interested in what I had to say and my opinions on health care etc. both interviewers had follow up questions on pretty much all my answers.

I didn't type this post to brag but to reiterate the importance of a good match. Schools want students that will do well there. No one wants to see a student work their butt off and then fail out. They want to make sure you mesh well with the infrastructure they have built there. Be confident but not overly so. Don't be more cheerful than you normally are. People say to smile a lot. I'm just not one of those people that smiles all the time and if I try to force a smile I look goofy and weird. Acting like you normally do will keep you in a comfortable state and you will be able to think better. Do your homework on cookie cutter questions like obamacare. I have a background in math so I did a statistical analysis of what I understood. I'm not saying you will get in if you do this but do what you are good at. I felt at home with math so the moment she hinted at numbers for obamacare I sprang at the opportunity. I was in my element and therefore more confident.

Protip, do not refer to the ACA as "obamacare". Big no no.
