Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Today's interviewees, best of luck for a speedy response!

Hope you enjoyed your interview day experience at Nova. More importantly, I hope you "pre-virgins" enjoyed Dr. Dribin's sense of humor 😀

That was AWESOME

Anyone get into this school with below a 24?

OR a low vr score?

I have a 3.7 GPA a 3.6 sciGPA---- I never had a C my lowest grade is a B- in Orgo 2. and I fell into a depression that semester so thjat to blame for that grade.

I am a Black Female and a resident of FL. I live 30 mins away from Nova. I went to FAU which is a low tier undergrad. and I plan to take some classess at a local college that use to be a CC... A and P, Gen Micro, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology.

I am going to work as a cna.

I was a medical translator for Haitian Creole at the Cardid Health Center for 3 months ( I was born in America and English is my first language) ( Cardid is a free clinic---- and Nova sends their students pharm, dental and med there for rotations)

I work as a tutor

I am a mentor for Palm Beach County as well.

I am trying to get the highest score possible but VR is bringing me down.

Oh, great! Well in that case you will learn soon enough 😀 Enjoy the time off. And for the love of God, do not spend your summer hardcore "prepping" for anatomy.

EDIT: If you want to get a head start on cranial nerves, just learn the lyrics of this song:

Thanks for the advice. I'm just teaching to make some money this semester and taking Spanish as I don't know any and those online module things scare me.

I haven't looked at them at all yet. I believe they are due at some point during M2 year. That could change for you guys, though.

I read that online. I had some scholarship money left over so figured might as well take it instead of trying to learn it then. I probably will need to anyways but this way I have some semblance of formal training in sentence structure.

Haha I tried that recently. Lasted 1 hour before I quit. Lol

Hah, I tried looking over some micro during break because I hated my undergrad micro. That lasted all of a few moments. True story.

That always helps. I brought my Spanish books from high school but so far I've made only futile attempts at opening or doing anything with them.

Maybemed, I don't know what you consider a low score but I was accepted with a 6 in BS. My other scores were much higher. Take that with a pinch of salt. Something else in my applicant might have stuck out.

I'm doing the exact same. Teaching part time, and learning Spanish!

I am told (by SDN, anyway) that Nova tends to be an MCAT-heavy school.

Having said that, a 9/9/9 would be on point. And your GPA/ECs are great AND you're familiar with the area so I wouldn't sweat it if you get a little less.

You should be ok for NOVA if you can get a 26+ MCAT...NOVA really put more emphasis on MCAT than GPAs...Taking classes at a state college is not an issue. I know someone who took all her prereqs at Broward College and had no problem getting into NOVA. Did not know that Florida Atlantic University was a low tier undergrad. It is not a top undergrad; however, it not a low tier one.

I got a 26p. I am Mexican-American. My BS degree is from the university of Phoenix (Army veteran and father of three, so that school was about my only choice), and I took all my prerequisite courses at a community college. I got an interview four weeks after submitting my secondary at NOVA, so I doubt any of what you mentioned would be held against you. So long as you perform well, the name of your undergraduate schools don't matter much. I agree with others that a 26+ would be right on target for this school. Good luck!🙂

Congrtas. Wow...I did not know that credits from these universities were transferable...What were you GPAs?

None of the courses you took during your undergraduate career "transfer" to medical school. You just have to meet the requirements of 90+ credit hours with a Bachelor’s degree preferred, and all the prerequisite courses at the school you're applying to. As far as the University of Phoenix and CC, they are both accredited and therefore medical schools must accept credits from those schools to meet their requirements. UoP actually gets a really bad reputation, but I attended classes on campus and a lot of my classmates were business men and women already in the workforce just trying to improve their opportunities for the future. They included retail and bank managers, retired military personnel, even a retired pilot that used to fly the Houston Rockets around the nation. They do accept many people that should not be there, but that’s simply because they are a for-profit institution. As far as my GPAs:

nGPA: 3.41
sGPA: 3.56
cGPA: 3.48

Thanks for the clarification... Have you received any acceptances this cycle?

im interviewing on jan 24 and booked my flight for 4:30pm after the interview. Does anyone know if I will have enough time to make it to the airport if I skip the campus tour and get a cab around 2?? I'm really hoping that I can make it and don't have to reschedule

That is exactly what I did. I had time to return my rental car and everything.

Good luck at the interview. Nova is a good school, it was difficult to turn it down.

Shouldn't be a problem at all if you skip the campus tour. Nova is right next to the interstate and it's about a 10 minute drive to get to the airport once you're on the interstate.

The campus tour is not all that important. It just shows you the buildings around campus, most of which you'll never ever visit. If you matriculate, you'll get a campus map during first week anyway.

Just wondering, how often do you use the sherman library? Or the gym?

Never lol the HPD library is just fine. I use the gym at my apartment complex and whatever stuff I have in my apartment.

What apartment complex are you at and how do you like it?

I sent you a PM. When I was looking for apartments, I looked up prior Nova threads on SDN and searched for "apartments" or "housing" in those threads. Turned up some pretty helpful info. Maybe the Facebook group has some more info as well?

Hi all!
I've been browsing through this thread and I'm starting to get really nervous about my application... My application has been "under review" since late October, and I'm starting to think I will not be invited to interview. I've called requesting status updates with the same response. Okay so honest opinions please, with my stats, do I have a better chance if I reapply next year a lot earlier in the cycle?
White female
GPA 3.6
sGPA 3.3
MCAT 28O
Lots of medical volunteering and shadowing experience (with all D.O.)
Original undergrad research
Thanks!🙂

I have similar stats as you, although with a lower GPA and higher MCAT, with lots of volunteering/DO shadowing/research. If you really want an interview here, I would call admissions again, it wouldn't hurt to show persistence right?

I'd say you have a great shot for an interview as long as your PS is up to par. My stats are a tad lower than yours and I have my interview this week.

For reference I applied late July with a 3.4 c/sGPA, 27 MCAT, lots of shadowing experience, and a years worth of research.

Hope that helps and good luck!

I have similar stats and was accepted. It can't hurt to send update letters of anything new that has happened. If worse comes to worse and you have to apply next year, you should definitely get an interview if you apply earlier.

Those are solid stats, I know people with less that were accepted. I'm sure you'll be just fine.

I have an interview coming up at NSU and wanted to hear what questions people have been asked. Any help is great!

I read in the 2011/12 forum that interviews after December never result in acceptances... Can anyone confirm/deny this? Is anyone getting acceptances these days?

I read this entire thread and compiled all the interview questions:

It was a great experience for me. Two faculty to one student. Both general and file specific questions. Only about 15 minutes. The current students were awesome. All of them were so helpful and had great personalities. We also got to "experience NSU as a student" where they let us try the simulation lab and take blood pressure/listen to the lung of a standardized patient (actor). Really advanced as far as technology goes and it seems like their students are top priority. The dean was great too and came after we ate lunch. I just felt bad for the undergrad showing us around the main campus after because we all looked so tired/relaxed after the day, and didnt have a ton of questions for her, and she was so bubbly. She did a good job though.

They basically just asked a few normal questions (why medicine? why DO? why this school?). After that we practiced taking blood pressure on a few volunteer "patients" and listened to heart rhythms on the patient simulators.

We were all asked different questions. I had some application specific ones and then very open ended ones. They were typical ones for me like tell me about yourself and why I was attracted to nova. My interview was short and sweet, not very conversational though but everyone was really nice

No ethics questions.

1.Tell me about yourself
2. Tell me about an issue in healthcare that's not the healthcare reform
3. Why NSU
4. Whats the toughest class you've had and how did you deal with it

The rest were application specific for me..basically questions you'd have at almost any interview

I had two interviewers who were great. Basically asked us the same questions.
1. tell us about yourself and why you want to be a physician?
2. tell us one problem with the current healthcare system and how you would address it?
3. tell us the main characteristic that you would think a physician should have?
etc.

They literally just said " tell me about your community service".

I did not like my interview today... Might have been lack of sleep but I felt like I was being grilled on my grades, studying techniques and health care reform.

The questions I was asked were : Tell me about yourself, a specific question about what I did to raise my MCAT score, how did shadowing inspire you to become a physician, what would you change about health care, give me an example of a leadership role you were in, how do you get organized, how do you think YOU can change people, how many schools did you apply to, what would you do if you got rejected, and finally why should we pick you over everyone else out in that room.

One question on "what was one time in your schooling when you had a difficult time and what did you do about it?"

Another tough question was "Tell us about a time in your life when you feel that the health care system let you (or someone you know) down."

The first question that they lead with. Usually is is something like "tell us about yourself."

I have heard others call it the "elevator talk" answer. As if you are stuck in an elevator with the CEO on the way up to the top of the building, what is it you can tell him/her that would help you get into the office and have a longer interview.

They asked me what I think about healthcare, I asked to clarify if she meant like the healthcare in general in the US or the reform, and I think it's perfectly okay to ask to clarify if you don't understand the question. Just don't try to BS. They asked about a few of my activities, and the weird thing they asked me was how I study, like, what my study habits are.

I was asked how I researched NSU. I was honest and listed the Osteopathic Medical School book, The NSU website, and current students that post on SDN. It seemed to go well. The follow-up question was what aspect of the school made me most want to apply? I talked about the community health program where every other week students spend a half day in a physician's office. I explained how I shadowed over 180 hours with the same physician and learned a lot from him about how to be a good doctor that listens to his patients.

So you said blah blah blah, but tell me more about why you want to be a physician

This is great, thanks so much for helping out! Fingers crossed they are still sending out interview invites!!!

Hey all,

I haven't posted here since I received a waitlist notification. I have written a letter of interest/intent whatever you want to call it (I haven't sent it yet) and have also obtained another letter of recommendation for a DO I work for which I will send in a week after he writes it for me. I finish up with a couple online courses in February and will send those grades in. Other than that, is there anything you guys think I could do to be reviewed again and taken off of the waitlist? Also, when can people start to anticipate waitlist movement? I've heard it was after interviews are over in April at the earliest but has anyone gotten off earlier than that?

Thanks guys and I hope you're all doing well!

Does anyone know if the AdCom met this week? Has anyone heard anything recently? No one has posted about acceptances in quite a while.

It was winter break. School was closed for a while. I don't know if they have sent out decisions already for the most recent batch of interviews but interviews are run until march last I saw. I was told the date the committee would meet for me and that I should not email them before then. Some kids found out a week after the interview. Others like me had to wait the entire two week period. If they ran interviews the first week of January, they still have until 3rd week jan to send out the acceptances. Further not everyone that interviews is a member of SDN.

Thanks for the information. How long after the committee met did they inform you of your acceptance? For example, if they told you that the committee meets on Thursday, did they inform you of your acceptance on Thursday or a couple days after?

CrappyJones123, I'm just a little uncertain about the timing here. I know you said you had to wait two weeks, but I'm not sure if you meant two weeks after your interview date or two weeks after the AdCom was supposed to meet and make a final decision on your application. Sorry to be such a nuisance.

Adcom met the day after my interview. So don't know if the time frame is longer for others. I am almost positive I was told it would be 2 weeks after the committee met. Because they would have had other files to read from previous interviews as well.

I interviewed last Tuesday jan 8th. They told us the committee meets today 1/15 and we should know no later than 1/18. That being said I know people who have had to wait much longer (eg: 3 weeks). From what I can tell the committe usually meets on Tuesdays and you hear back on fridays

The FAQ sheet that's was given in the interview folder says that waitlisted people can get chosen anytime from march-august
