Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for your help. Will they notify you of an acceptance via email? I'm assuming you haven't heard anything yet?

Yeah email. You get an email and then they send you an official letter following the email. All decisions are emailed from what I was told including waitlists and rejections. We haven't heard anything back yet. I'm not expecting anything until friday

I have an interview on Jan 31st. Just wanted to know what are the chances of being admitted after having a good interview. Thank you in advance for your input.

I think it's posted somewhere that it's a 70%+ acceptance rate post interview at NSU. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Some say it's been as high as 85% for some years. If you are granted an interview, they are seriously considering you.

Is that straight up acceptances or acceptances off the waitlist as well...

I think it includes the waitlist. I say that because the percentage came from taking the number accepted and dividing by the number interviewed.

Wow, kind of makes sense because I never heard someone say I got interviewed and they said no on this student doc site for last years cycle. All I saw was that some got wait listed.

I want to get a puppy during medical school. How horrible/awesome of an idea is this?

Nvm, tons of posts about it. Still kinda want a puppy though :/ *sigh*

I'd go shelter/rescue dog. Most are already potty trained with basic commands and you see the personality of the dog whereas with puppies it's a bit of a surprise. Plus shelter dogs are wayyyyy cheaper.

ok, a couple questions for people who have already interviewed: what hotel should i stay at? is there a shuttle that brings you from the interview to the airport or do i need to get a cab? is it easy to get a cab if there is no shuttle, or should i rent a car? any advice would be extremely helpful, thanks so much!

Hampton Inn Plantation. Complementary breakfast, shuttle to/from the school and airport and will even pick you up from the school with your luggage and take you right to the airport after if you want. They hold your luggage for you while you interview at the hotel after you've checked out. I had a good experience.

So I just got home and received an email that I'm accepted at NOVA. Started screaming and jumping up and down - only to find out that the acceptance letter that's attached has a different name... Still love NSUCOM but this is pretty screwed up..

Omg lol...the ultimate tease!

Tell me about it. I called their hotline and they're closed for today. It'll have to wait tomorrow afternoon because I work. 🙁 I really hope I'm accepted.

I'm sure they have a letter template where they just change the name. Maybe they forgot to change the name on the attached document. But if they emailed you, they probably intended on accepting you. That's just my opinion.

When did you interview?

I hope so. The subject and the email itself had my name. I do think the pdf is the actual letter they send out but scanned because it's signed by the dean. Interviewed Jan 8 so I was expecting the email tomorrow. This was definitely more than a surprise.

Unless that was your name on the letter...

Didn't you guys figure out that they have been emailing acceptances alphabetically? Or is that still just a theory?

That seems like an illogical way to send out acceptances, it's probably a theory. I would assume that they would notify in the order that interviews were conducted as the Dean signs off.

Agreed, I just couldn't remember if you guys figured something out or not. Guess not. Carry on.

I love the school and some of the best physicians I worked with graduated from NOVA. HOWEVER, the front office leaves something to be desired.

So I have an interview at NOVA on Feb. 14th. I also have one at LECOM-Erie on Feb. 1st. I only have enough money to go to one. I have a 3.44cgpa, 29Q. Which school do you think I would have the best chance of getting accepted at this late in the cycle (I know this is a question that one can only speculate about). Thanks for your help.

Much better chance at lecom, but nova would be the better school by a long shot. I'd really try to go to both if you can manage. That's a rough scenario though

For those that interviewed on Jan. 10th, have you heard back from the school yet?? They said we should hear back by Thursday, but haven't heard anything.

Looks like I'm gunna be in Florida for a few years longer! ACCEPTED!

I Interview on Jan 8th, and just got the acceptance email like 30 minutes ago😀, so I'm sure you can expect to hear back sometime today.

Congratulations everyone, seems like it takes about a week to find out if your accepted. Not a bad wait=)

Congratulations. But wow, something seems weird at the admissions dept with all the errors lately.

Interview invite Jan 8, Interview Jan 10, Accepted today. Looks like I'll be a shark 🙂

My interview is on the 31st of Jan and I wanted to know if it is an open file or closed file interview. Wondering if the people doing to interview will have your application in hand while asking questions.

mine was open file

Does anybody else have to make a tough decision between NOVA and LECOM-B?? If so, which way are you leaning?? I just want to know what sort of things are you considering and why one school over the other?

I was going through the same situation and in the end I chose to go w/ nova. Nova has a longer more storied reputation here in south florida. I worked with many Nova physicians and they're all studs. With nova you'd have the opportunity to rotate through several large hospitals w/ some having NSU affiliated residency spots.

LECOM-B is cheaper and does BPL which I liked. Nova does more traditional teaching which I'm not a huge fan of but whatever.

I'd go with NOVA.

Not a tough decision; these schools are on opposite sides of the spectrum in terms of approach to education. Simply put, Lecom-B is very hands off in their curriculum, NSU is very hands-on. Lecom sets you loose to explore medicine within a framework and establish your own rotations, NSU has a very specific curriculum and rotation system. NSU reps directly told us at interview that they mommy us to ensure a precise academic outcome. Lecom really pushes the "you take responsibility" angle. Lecom is about 28-30K annually, NSU is about 45k, if I remember correctly. Both schools have excellent weather if you don't mind heat. Lecom is significantly more rural/suburban, NSU is urban/suburban.

Also, NSU has been around since the mid 70s, Lecom is much newer. I take the administration of the school I'm choosing seriously, and while I didn't research Lecom extensively because I got bad vibes there, NSU is a massive institution. While it may be slower and more bureaucratic, I feel confident that it will remain sound for the duration of my time there.

Yes I had to choose between both schools. I chose Nova for a number of reasons. One of the biggest is because after some serious thought, I didn't want to gamble my one and only medical education I worked so hard to obtain on a brand new curriculum, namely PBL. I am sure I could handle it, but why fix something that already works well for me.

Nova also is affiliated with some large hospitals and it's possible to do your entire 3rd year in one place. Not so with LECOM-B. I already had to move a couple of times within a year last year. I don't want to do that again. It's a pain. And I don't even have a lot of stuff.

Other reasons include reputation, city setting, etc. I am happy with my choice.

Thanks for your input guys. I like NOVA for all the reasons that you guys mentioned, but I keep going back to LECOM, mainly because of their tuition cost. But I definitely agree that NOVA has a lot more to offer. So at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. And I already paid LECOM-B their deposit, so I would have to figure out a way to get that back, but I don't think I'll be very successful at it. Though they haven't cashed my check yet and I sent it in about a month ago, so maybe there is some hope there.
