Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for your input guys. I like NOVA for all the reasons that you guys mentioned, but I keep going back to LECOM, mainly because of their tuition cost. But I definitely agree that NOVA has a lot more to offer. So at the end of the day, you get what you pay for. And I already paid LECOM-B their deposit, so I would have to figure out a way to get that back, but I don't think I'll be very successful at it. Though they haven't cashed my check yet and I sent it in about a month ago, so maybe there is some hope there.

Call your bank and put a stop payment on thay check! Do it NOW

Interview invite Jan 8, Interview Jan 10, Accepted today. Looks like I'll be a shark 🙂

You must be the one that took that Jan 10th spot away from me! I saw one open up and as I wondered wether I could get a flight that soon, it disappeared!

Congratulations to all accepted today!!!

Does anybody else have to make a tough decision between NOVA and LECOM-B?? If so, which way are you leaning?? I just want to know what sort of things are you considering and why one school over the other?

Forget everything and ask yourself which type of curriculum do you prefer: lecture-based or PBL. Only you can answer this for yourself. As for PBL being a "gamble". it maybe that but it is a gamble that has resulted in LECOM-B being near or at the top of the board scores chart year after year, so evidently they must have figured out how to play this "gamble" the right way. NOVA most likely beats LECOM in the rotation department, but contrary to what somebody posted earlier, LECOM does provide the opportunity for year long spots so you don't have to move around. Finally, the cost factor comes into play. For me personally, I don't want to be a slave to debt longer than I have to be and 30k vs. 45k will make a significant difference in my quality of life when all the interest accumulates and I am making payments.

Hm. I was told during our interview that we will definitely have to move for rotations. It didn't even sound like a slight possibility to have one spot. Maybe the opportunity to have a year long spot is not available for all students, just a select few?

Year long spots are most definitely available. As for how many students get them, I really wouldn't be able to tell you. From my research and PMing current students, there are enough spots to allow more than just a select few students to rotate there, but not enough to allow the whole class to go there.

I remember the last week of studying for the MCAT was the worst. I was having so much anxiety, I wasn't scoring what I wanted and I felt horrible. That being said...good luck!

I'm a 2nd year at Nova:
1. Our 2014 class just had a 98% pass rate without doing the whole artificial-100% pass bit that Lecom and some other schools do.

2. There's no question about the quality of our rotation sites over lecom's (do they have more than a few tiny spots?). Broward General (huge, old school, busy, dirty, lots of infectious disease, trauma, etc.), Largo Medical Center (the biggest AOA residency-laden hospital in the country? If not, close to it), Florida Hospital (east Orlando- great programs, attached to one of the largest hospital systems in the country), Mt. Sinai in Miami (another big, classic academic institution, shared with UMiami), many others.

3. Your experience at Nova will be far and away more enriching than a one building school with no undergrad. We've got more clubs, events, talks, outreach programs (international) than most schools in the country. Don't get me wrong- the place has its problems, they all do, but once you go to conferences and talk to kids at other schools... I'm very happy I came to Nova.

4. Plus, now the attendance policy is gonzo as of this coming fall.

Cheers.

I interviewed here this week and it absolutely blew my expectations away! I am really really hoping for an acceptance! So scared!!

Great post. Thank you. Is #4 for real??? If so, this school just got a little better in my mind. Way more time to study then.

Yup apparently attendance is recommended now. During my visit 3 days ago our tour guide (a second year) told us she'd just gotten an email confirming the change.

I completely agree with you. Everything about the school is inviting. The campus is absolutely beautiful, the staff was friendly, and the students were happy. And after the Dean spoke to us, I was completely sold; I even got a little emotional.

That whole week was kind of a blur until I read that... I remember calling my parents and telling them I was thinking about voiding because I didn't give myself enough time to prep.

Glad I went with my gut on test day and stuck with the results.

Go sharks!

Just out of curiosity, what did the dean talk about? I wonder if it was the same topic he brought up with us or if he really does come up with new things to talk about...

Thanks, it's a terrible feeling (also not scoring what I want, but how realistic is a 45 😉. Congratulations to you though!

The dean talked up the career of a physician. Even though many med students complain about decreasing salary, increased competitiveness, increasing workload, the benefits outweigh the negatives. The job security, prestige, and satisfaction make it all worthwhile. Even when the dean was celebrating his son's birthday to take a call, he said he never regretted it. He's a pretty cool guy and just shot the **** with everyone in the room.
It just seemed like he cared about the students and our success by taking time out of his day to talk applicants. I got really good vibes throughout the whole interview. Crossing my fingers and toes to hear good news.

For those recently accepted, do you have an idea when deposits are due? My packet doesn't have info on dates, only options to pay. thanks in advance.

Pretty sure the inital deposit is required by Feb 1st. Says dates that payment are required in the big school book they gave you at the interview

Check the attachment in the acceptance email. Should have due dates.

Yep, attendance policy will now read "Encouraged, with small groups/labs required." Like most other places.

Just sent in my acceptance fee this morning. Really excited about NOVA. Is it true that the incoming class will get ipads?? I remember somebody was saying that on this thread a while back, but NOVA didn't say anything about it during my interview.

Not really sure about the ipad, I keep hearing differing things. Either way I'm excited about the no longer mandatory attendance.

Still waiting to hear back.... so nervous! The admission department must have my phone number memorized with how many times I call for updates! 😛

When I interviewed, I'm pretty sure they told us that the entering class will get ipads. I remember them even talking about the different kinds of apps you can get on it (not sure if included). I interviewed Dec 13th. Maybe they changed their minds since then?

The class rep said that they're talking about it, but it's not final. Plus it's not like it's free, it will just be included in the tuition. Don't choose to go to a school because they "offer" iPads.

I interview next Thursday, can't wait to go through it and get to the waiting process again. Hopefully it takes week or a week and half to find out.

In today's interview they said we would receive iPads, but that is the least of reasons to attend NSU. That place is amazing.

Oh I totally agree. I wasn't sold on NOVA until after I interviewed there. They really do sell the school during interview and they have so many selling points. I don't think ipads will ever make or break my decision, but it's just nice to see the school is keeping up with modern technology.

Have you all started looking for places around the campus yet??

How can I find the facebook page for accepted Nova students for class of 2017?

I don't think they try that hard to "sell" the school. Everything they offer spoke for themselves.

I'm still bummed out that the dean wasn't there when I interviewed. All I got was a lame video, but at least I saw his 'stache in it. Lol

Duude the stache is sick! I've never seen anything like it.. at any moment i thought it would start flapping off the dean's face and flutter around the room. Totally wasn't expecting to be in the presence of the king of staches that day

I was disappointed the "stache" was not available, but enjoyed the interview day very much.

Does anyone know how long Nova takes to make a decision after you've had your interview?

About 2 weeks my email...followed by snail mail later

I believe the next adcom meeting is jan 29th, latest we should hear back is feb 8th. That's what Anastasia said at least, so i wouldn't worry yet!

I interview on the 31st of this month. You think they will let us know by Feb 8th as well?

Do you guys know how the rotation works at NSU? Is it based on a lottery system?

I'd be so pissed if I got out of state rotation.

supposedly you don't get out of state rotations if you don't want them.
