Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was stressing out about not hearing anything....just realized i never sent my lors (facepalm)

@Dc & Psquared what do you believe we're your weaknesses throughout your attempts?

Yup. Apply early. With so many applicants, some luck is involved. I think we all feel we have pretty strong applications, experiences, letters, etc. the truth is that you never know. My GPA and mCaT are average for any DO school.

Wish you the best of luck

I just reserved for holiday inn express. They don't have a shuttle to the university but I'll just take a cab. It's a bit cheaper than hamptons.

Wow I have above average but still average stats and haven't heard anything. I had good ECs too I'm so damn nervous and worried now. 3.68, 3.51, 29s. wow. This sucks.

First cycle ice? And you thought waiting for MCAT score was long. Definitely stinks. Good stats

I'm IS with many years of medical experience and good stats. Nothing either. Don't get worried yet! There is still plenty of time.

Anyone got an II without all letters of rec in????????????????

Hey guys just wanted to let you know a little bit of my experiences thus far with Nova. When I applied last year, I turned in my secondary on 8/16 and was complete maybe one week later. On 8/23 I received an interview invitation. I ended up on the WL and despite many updates on my end, I was unfortunately not accepted for this Fall.

This year, I was complete per admissions approx 1 month ago (early July) and I have not heard anything at this point with regard to interviews. I do have pretty low stats compared to many posting here, so I'm not that surprised, however, I just want to let people know that nothing is guaranteed and you should forego most if not all of your expectations. Be realistic and humble yourself, there's a lot of quality applicants out there. Just as important, don't get discouraged if you're not hearing what you hoped to hear. I met a bunch of remarkable young adults at my interview and if you've been granted an interview, you're likely one of them too.

Just do your best to keep working hard and building for your future because the next thing you know a whole year has passed, you have no acceptances, and you didn't do as much as you probably could have in the off-year to make yourself better for the next. I know from experience! When you're waiting it feels like a lifetime, but the year actually flew by and I just hope I have enough to show for it this time around. Good luck to you all!

What a great post. Best of luck this season!

Did anybody else receive a second complete email With a PDF attached?

Yeah, I haven't heard back from NOVA yet.

Submitted supplemental June 28th...has anyone who submitted on that day heard back?

I think was complete in first week of July.

If SDN is representative of the applicant pool, NSU is going to have the lowest acceptance rate based off sheer traffic and Nova fanboys haha.

I got an ii for Oct. 10. I feel bad for some of you that didnt get an ii, because I feel like most of you have better stats than me

My stats are 3.73 sciGPA/ 3.81 cum GPA (combined undergrad & grad)
27-O MCAT (6 VR - 10 PS - 11 BS )

But I know schools vary with what they focus on in terms of GPA and MCAT.
For example, LECOM says they focus more on the undergrad GPA than the grad.
In that case, my undergrad sci GPA of 3.92 and cum of 3.95 is what they focus on. Touro-NY weighs BS section of MCAT heavily, so theyll be looking at my BS score in connection with my composite score, while U Miami weighs Verbal heavily (sucks for me 🙁 ). So i guess it all depends. Best of luck to you all :xf:

Btw did anyone sign up for the DO/DMD program at NOVA?
I'm interested in this, but wondering if its extreme work overload, and how the Board exams for both medical and dental come into play...:eyebrow:

One of my friends is in the DO/DMD program. Med and dental years are separated and you take both boards. It is a long journey, to say the least!

Wait so, after your MS II, you take COMLEX I and/or USMLE Step 1 and THEN do dental stuff?

I would love to have both degrees, I'm so excited I hope I get into the DO/DMD program !!!

No my friend is starting D1 year (after M1) while the rest of us just started M2 year.

My bf knows someone in the program at the moment. His friend is in the last section of it, he is doing his one year rotation. My bf trying to set up a lunch date so I could ask him questions abt the program. When I get some info I will post it here.

I thought about it, but then I didn't really understand the appeal. Unless you plan on being the town's only doctor, you'll end up using only one degree. Unless you like the letters at the end, Dr. blahblah, D.O., D.M.D. I don't see the practicality unless you want a "backdoor" way of being a dentist as a pre-med.

Oral surgery is another path for dual medical and dental degrees.

Precisely. Oral and maxillofacial surgery have long study paths.

Yeah. Forgot to mention the maxillofacial aspect... kinda lumped it all in there. My friend will definitely be here for a while if they decide to stick with it. I'll be half way through residency by then.

I have a general question. It seems like I read somewhere you can apply without having received your Letters of Recommendation. Is this true? If so, when do they require them to be received?

Ya you can apply without the LOR's ready... but when I talked to them, they said if you have them in, it would be considered along with the rest of your app when deciding to give you an interview.. so i'd recommend having them ready if you have good letters.

I'm assuming they would have to be in before the interview if you get an invite.

Can confirm! II here as well 😀

Looks like it was just good news for me after all. Bad news is that the interview dates available are already going towards October.

Congrats darklabel, glad it worked out for you. Good luck with your interview. 👍

First Interview Invite!!!!!!! So blessed!!!!!!

Congrats to everyone!

😳 Well when you have an Admissions rep say "Decision made, expect something in the mail", I'm sure most people would freak out and take that as an auto reject/waitlist.

Congrats darklabel, glad it worked out for you. Good luck with your interview. 👍

Thanks m8, good luck to you too and hope your cycle is shaping up well also. 👍

Nice! Glad to hear it wasn't the bad news you were thinking it was! Now just prep to kill it at the interview.
