Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Awww man I feel really bad now. Thursday was M2 exams and we had our first set of exams on Friday and we were literally all holed up in the library studying. Sorry you didn't have an awesome interview day but if you get accepted and find yourself doubting wether or not to go, make sure you talk to some of the students. A lot of them are super friendly and maybe they can change your mind? I feel bad that our complete inability to notice anything but our textbooks all week ruined your interview day 🙁[/QUOTE]

I wouldn't say it ruined my interview day. I enjoyed the group I was with. I loved the simulator time. I just don't know if its the right fit. Wish I had more time to be on campus and see if it was an off day for me or maybe for the school. The area was much busier than I remembered. How do you feel about the commute? And areas to live? What about getting to your clinical sites? I know all the books are digital but are regular books available in the library? What about sharing the building with all the other disciplines: it seemed really crowded, loud and busy. Was it just the day we were there?

Thank you for taking the time to help! If I get accepted I may take a day to go back over before I make a decision.

How do you feel about the commute?

It depends on how far away you live, honestly. I don't recommend living outside of the Davie/Plantation area, but some of my classmates do and somehow make it happen. The morning commute takes about 5-20 minutes depending on if you live less than 2 miles vs less than 5 miles from campus. The more you live north of 595, the longer it will take. If you leave after class at 3pm it won't take you very long at all. If you leave at 5 like on lab days, then you might be looking at 20 minutes or more it you live north of 595. In all honesty it is not terrible. You must make sure to leave your house on-time for exams, though. I live about 2 miles north of 595 and it takes me about 20 minutes from my place to campus parking garage. For a 8am exam I tend to leave at 7am mostly to avoid traffic but also to give me time to glance over a few of my notes one last time. You'll figure out a system that works for you.

And areas to live?

Plenty. Dorm-style living in Rolling Hills, student apartments literally a stone's throw away from HPD, quieter apartments and condos around Davie and Plantation. There are many options.

What about getting to your clinical sites?

I'm an M2 so I'm not sure how long it takes to get to most of the clinical sites for M3/M4. But I've been to Broward General multiple times and it takes about 20-30 minutes from campus, probably more if it is a particularly busy time of the day.

I know all the books are digital but are regular books available in the library?

Yes

What about sharing the building with all the other disciplines: it seemed really crowded, loud and busy. Was it just the day we were there?

There are a lot of health profession colleges at Nova, which I enjoy. I like the atmosphere. Each college has their own area where they spend the majority of their time. As an M1, you will spend the majority of your time in the Steele auditorium facing the main atrium near the cafeteria. It is loud and busy during lunch time and during breaks, but it is not loud or distracting during lectures. Maybe you're more sensitive than I am. M2s have lecture in the auditorium outside of the main HPD by the pavilion and parking garage. No noise there either. It really depends on how you feel. Sure there are a lot of students here in the HPD, but we all have our own areas of study more or less. The hallways can get crowded by students of other colleges, but they're waiting to go into an exam. Just say excuse me like you would anywhere else in the world and you'll be fine, or take the outside breezeway and enter through a different entrance. Problem solved.

Let me know if you have any other questions. We're here to help! Perhaps you couldn't tell this due to inadequate time with students, but there is a strong sense of community within the medical school. M1s help M1s, M2s help M2s and M1s, M3s help M3 and M2s... if you get my drift.

NeuroLAX you are da bomb! Thank you for the very detailed post. It's helped clarify many things.

No problem! I know you didn't get to experience Nova from a medical student's perspective, so if you have any more questions or concerns don't hesitate to send me a PM or ask on this thread. Good luck this cycle!

hi, how did you guys know if you were complete? Do they send out an email?

For the interviews where do we get parking passes? Is it included with an email or do you just check in and get one? Any advice from current students about the best place to park?

It's in the email link with schedule and map

Figured I should probably join this network since I've been viewing it for a couple years. It's great to see so many people in the medical field helping each other and not competing like I'd expect.

I'm currently at the Hampton Inn Plantation and will be staying through Friday if anyone wants to get dinner or a drink. Best of luck to everyone and get some sleep tonight if you are here!

As for parking, I would try to get here between 7:45-8:00 AM and park in the parking garage next to HPD. You can't miss it. It is doubtful that you would find a spot in the outside lot in front of the parking garage, but you can try. Those usually fill up before 8 AM by faculty and some students. The parking lot directly in front of HPD is off-limits for everyone but administrators. An alternative to the parking garage is a lot adjacent to campus that is accessible by turning into the plaza that has the NSU Bookstore, so Google that to get an idea of where it is. It is a short walk, and I'm not sure about parking restrictions there as I've never parked there, but it is worth a shot if you can't find a spot in the parking garage. Keep in mind that the plaza is rather large, and you would have to park towards the north side of the lot closest to HPD.

Did anyone take the shuttle in from Hampton? My interview is at 8:30 and shuttle leaves at 8...cutting it close I'd think...

I had the same worries. that being said, those worries were not warranted

Anybody know the last time they sent out a batch of interview invites? Coming up soon?

Anybody else have this problem of their primary and secondary application being seperate and having to be merged?

Also, if they are still merging my app when it's already September 4th, does that mean I'm already too late for an interview?

any chance we get acceptance/waitlist this friday for those interviewed last week?

Two interview invites so far, and I'm hoping for some love from Nova.

Still no interview, been complete for about 1 1/2 months.

One interview invite so far but samesies.

I got really excited because I got a call today from an unknown Florida number...

Me: Hello?
Jeanette: Hi this is Jeanette *talks really fast*
Me: Uh...what?
Jeanette: something something cross country something
Me: I'm sorry?
Jeanette: Ma'am, are you a long-distance trucking company?
Me: No, I'm a person
Jeanette: Oh I'm sorry. *click*

Had my interview today! I really loved the campus and faculty. Everyone was so friendly and made sure we all felt really comfortable.

Being my first interview, I was nervous but the two people who interviewed me made sure I felt at ease. We laughed and even told some jokes.

I would definitely love to go here! They said they meet every other Tuesday to discuss a decision regarding acceptances and they just met two days ago. They said no later than four weeks!!

I'm so excited 😀

good luck! Don't stress! I was asked several general questions such as "Tell me about yourself, tell me about your extracurriculars, what do you think is the problem with healthcare, how do you manage your time, and what do you do creatively"

How receptive is this school to in the area emails? I am trying to plan my interview at Lake erie and would like to make one trip to florida instead of two. Thanks!

Worth a shot. They seem pretty nice to just about everything else I've read so far!

Glad to hear you had a positive experience. Feel free to pm me with any questions regarding the school.

I've been reading different opinions on this topic but I want some advice before I decide to spend 30+ dollars.

Will I be expected to bring a leather portfolio with me to the interview? Will a small note pad with a pen suffice (I will keep them in the inside pocket of my jacket)?

They have a name badge and folder provided--also includes a pen so I would save that 30$.

+1 for not spending the $30.

You won't be expected to bring anything. I considered buying a portfolio type thing last year after seeing some guy carrying one around at my first interview, but every school I interviewed at gave us a folder with a bunch of papers inside. If there was something I really needed to write, I would just write on the back of one of the papers/ on the inside of the folder. A small notepad/pen is fine!

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE about the part in bold?!?!?!

Could someone outline 4th year for me? I remember seeing it somewhere but can't seem to find it now. Is it 8 weeks of rural and the rest electives? Any restrictions on the electives? Thank you!

I would honestly wait for the invite and schedule your LECOM-B interview a little bit later, assuming you have other interview options for earlier.

Imagine you were courting two women. One of them is Nancy (Nova), and the other is Brittany (LECOM-B). Nancy and Brittany live within close proximity to one another. You have a date scheduled with Brittany, and you have yet to hear back from Nancy. You call up Nancy, and you say, "Say, girl, when are you going to let me pick you up for a date? I'm in the area on Tuesday because I'm going to holla at my other girl, Brittany, and I don't really think you deserve a trip of your own so why don't we just schedule our date for later in the night"?

I don't think Nancy would be pleased.

This is the absolute best explanation I have ever heard. I don't get why people don't see this!

I read somewhere on last years thread that (or maybe the year before) that Nova accepts ~400/600 interviewees. Does anybody know if this true? Seems really high especially compared to LECOM..

Haha it was funny to read but I got an ii from LECOM-B with an in the area email, after I find out the date of my Nova interview. I think they are a bit more appreciative to the fact that this isn't a cheap process than some people think. Just make sure it didn't seem like your demanding an interview but asking if they are thinking about it if it would be possibly to work with you. Just my two cents bad on my own experience.

When I interviewed at Nova, the current med students reassured us that the acceptance percentage is realllllllllllllllly high for interviewed people.

I was also thinking you already had the II and wanted to bump it sooner. If that's the case I think they would be more receptive than if you just asked for one. Yu don't necessarily have to say you're in town for lecom though..
