Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are we going to be getting another acceptance packet after the initial one? Mine had 2 letters, how to pay the deposit and some housing info, but what about immunizations, background check, white coat, orientation dates and everything else that needs to be taken care of? Since sending in my deposit I haven't heard anything back.

I got accepted too..and haven't even received my first acceptance packet. When did you get yours? I got accepted 12/16.
I also paid my deposit via Market Place, but they haven't even charged my credit card yet.

You should get info on immunizations, background check, white coat ceremony, and orientation dates in the spring. Around March or April. You'll be getting emails from now on. I'd say make sure your immunizations are up to date, especially your Hepatitis series. A lot of us this year had to redo some stuff. The company that handles the immunization stuff has some weird requirements, like the Tuberculosis screens (yes, it has to be 2) have to be within two weeks of each other.

Thanks man!!

Withdrew my acceptance at Nova a couple of weeks ago. Best of luck, everyone! :luck:

Interviewed 12/3, accepted 12/20!
3.52 GPA and 31 Mcat

Excited to be a shark! Looking forward to meeting everybody. Any other gators on here?

Soooo.... if I go get a physical in a week, will I have to go back to do something else? I guess is there anything I should make sure to do now so I don't have to make another appointment with him? The TB tests are different, my school has walk ins for that, sucks that we have to do it twice though.

I'm a little late, but congrats to all the recent acceptances!! It's nice to get good news just in time for the holidays 🙂

Building A is all singles, and building C has singles and quads. RH is worth it in the sense that it comes with furniture and is literally 3 blocks away from campus. If you decide to go with RH, I highly recommend getting the single. I tried the quad with the themed housing option that they had and 1.) it's not themed that well and 2.) it's way too small for 4 people.

If you're worried about not having anyone to hang out with, my class had some meetups in June/July so we got to know each other and make friends before school even started.

Thank you! Cool blog by the way, though it definitely worries me more than it comforts me knowing what's coming!

Ah, the last thing I wanted the blog to do was to scare or intimidate future students. You're not the only person who has expressed some worry after reading it, so I'm thinking my focus has been too much on exams and studying. I'm trying to make it more light-hearted, haha.

Just read the whole thing and am no longer excited for school haha

Yes, you'll definitely have to go back. Your doctor will have to sign off on the physical exam form and the immunization forms too.

Whoa slow down there, friend. Is there a reason you're in a hurry to get the physical? Trust me, if you are this proactive then you'll have plenty of time when you get the matriculation and immunization forms in the mail! I would worry myself about what fireworks I'm going to blow up on NYE 🙂

Just to ease your nerves, I had way less time to get my forms in than you and everything was still ok. Nothing to stress out about.

I had to get a physical for CUSOM when I didn't know I had gotten in here, theirs was due in March so I had to get it done soon. I am stressing too much too early, though, I'm just excited to be going to Nova!

Are there any hotels that offer shuttle to/from the airport and to/from NSU?

Haha don't take it too seriously. For now just enjoy the time you have before school starts!

Hampton Inn had a shuttle to the school. I believe they also have an airport shuttle to FLL.

Nope still waiting. I also sent my deposit via market place and they haven't charged it yet. And they haven't acknowledged my TS and intent letter lol. But it's the holidays

Is a February 4th interview date considered "late". I want to see if I can reschedule for an earlier spot but in doing so I might lose my Feb 4th. slot. Haven't been able to find how many of the spots have been filled thus far.

Being trapped by mountains of snow makes me glad I'll be moving to FLL. I seriously can't handle cold/snow, and I've lived in the Northeast all my life. :dead:
It's a high of 65 degrees down here today. This is considered chilly to some. I actually saw several sweaters being worn. It's a rough life, but someone has to do it.

If a Northeasterner ever saw someone wearing a sweater in 65 degree weather, they would roll their eyes and be like 😵

Yeah it feels awesome today in South Florida. Why couldn't it be like this in December? This past December was the warmest I can ever remember. Sorry Chillywilly, I am rocking a light sweater today. Deal with it 😉

My friend went to UF in Gainesville. He'd complain that it was cold when it was 70 out. LOL

Wouldn't even eye-roll. We'd probably just stand there in shock

So I realize this is a tropical environment, but I hate bugs. I'm hoping living on a second or third floor could be better than being exposed to the ground. Most apartment reviews for places in the area, even those that look nice are terrible. Maybe people are just being unreasonable but one horror story on apartmentratings was from a nova med student complaining about ants crawling on him in his sleep (Shudders). Given that people generally are more apt to write bad reviews than good, can current students lay out the good bad and ugly about the places you guys live now and what you would do if you could do it over?

70?! Did he hate winter in Gainesville? It gets down into the 30s sometimes.

I received my acceptance email on Dec 19th but I have yet to receive anything in the mail. How does one go about paying the deposit? can it be done online?
Thanks!

Google nova marketplace, sketchy site but go to university store tab then college of osteopathic medicine then doctor of osteopathic medicine then deposit. Youll have to choose the amount (1250 for acceptance fee, 750 deposit or 2000 for both). Youll get a confirmation once, you pay then they charge your card within a few days. Hope this helps!

Hey does anyone know any libraries at Nova that have long hours?

I went to an undergrad school that had library hours from 730am-3am and even 24/7 during finals.
When I interviewed at several med schools, I realized I was spoiled as an undergrad with these hours...because most schools libraries close at 11pm :arghh:

I'm a bit of a night owl, so I like studying at night.. and prefer a library setting. Any info would be great!
The Alvin Sherman library looks amazing, but I don't want to be bothered by noisy undergrads 🙄

They closed all of their offices on the 20th for the holidays and just opened back up yesterday I believe. So I doubt they got around to mailing out physical letters before the office closed. I got my acceptance email on the 20th and I haven't received any physical mail yet either. If you check the email it will have brief instructions on how to do so online. Or it looks like HeronsBeak answered the question so you should be good to go. If you haven't done so yet you should join the incoming class fb group 🙂

Does the hpd building have bike racks? I dont mind living two or three miles away if we can ride in.

Unfortunately it is a public library (though part of a private university) so you will have lots of randoms in there at all times (undergrads from Nova, Broward college, FAU, and the general public). I know this because I used this library as an undergrad and it was usually pretty crowded. It usually closes at 11pm which kind of sucks. My current school's library is open until 1am, though other colleges/programs on the campus with their own library (such as law) are usually open all night. Check and see if other colleges/programs on the NSU campus have longer hours, that would be your best bet. I know the HPD library is usually open until midnight, double check though. Good luck here, you will love it. I gave up my seat here for another school - I've been in south Florida too long and could not do another 4 years.

No wayyy, I can totally see my life in South Florida for the next 85 years.

Ps... It is 5 degrees today in NJ, and this morning it was 0. Have fun with that 😛

Hahaha I hear you. Place is awesome to live, don't get me wrong. There is just TOO much to do down here. I unfortunately don't see myself being able to concentrate real well in med school here - for those able to do so, more power to them!

P.s. it's 75* right now. Love this place hahaha

Still waiting for my acceptance packet, although I did most of the stuff required from me except the physical/immunizations. I just wanted the packet to snuggle with at night

I paid the full deposit. What else is there to do?

I sent in my tech standards, intent of enrollment, official transcripts, and FAFSA.

Still need to do:
physical/immunizations
apply for federal loans
look at housing/ways to pay for meals

Good catch.

Do i need to have a fancy notebook/folder for the interview to walk around with?

Hey everyone, I know I'm kind of late to this and I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but I was accepted on 9/20. I'm pretty sure I'll be coming down to SoFlo from cold-for-no-reason NJ in August 2014. Is anyone else here receiving the HPSP scholarship? I am receiving mine through the USAF. Also congratulations to everyone else and good luck to those still waiting!

Is SoFlo a thing? I've been saying it too (also from NJ) and all of my friends think it's the stupidest thing. lol. Let's make it a thing.

Where did you get additional information about the HPSP scholarship? I'm probably going to go down in mid-July

Omg too many Jerseyans are going to Nova... Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. North Jersey represent!

If it's at all possible I want to move down there after 4th of July. I wanna get all that South Beach partying out of my system before school starts.

If SoFlo is not a thing, then we will make it so. I've actually visited NSU a few times, my cousin is in their 7-year program so I had some sweet exposure to the school/environment. Also, there are a bunch of resources online but you have to do it through a local recruiter. If you want some more information, feel free to message me and I will see what I can find!

Yeah it does seem that way, but from what I can tell it seems like they have a pretty diverse class!
