Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This may have been asked before, but I was wondering if any current students can shed some light on how much time OPP takes up for them. I know the labs are 2 hours a week, but how much time outside of lab is used on average for studying techniques? I'm between 2 schools so just trying to compare the two.

I don't think most of us spend a lot of time on it outside of class. What I normally do is cram for the practical a couple of days before the test and usually get a good score.

Soooooo if we put down a deposit/accept a spot in the class if something happens (cough cough another school decides to speak the f up) then are we allowed to withdraw, say, in March?

Yes, you can withdraw, but would not get a refund of your full or partial deposit. If you are leaving other options open, I would only put the minimum required deposit down... just my opinion.

Would anyone be able to speculate why most of the residency matches come from the East coast or mid-West? I'm guessing a larger portion of the student body comes from the East coast or mid-West and then decides to stay for residency in this region? Just looking at the match list from last year looks like two students placed in residencies in California and two placed in residencies in Washington (these two look like army programs). Basically what I'm wondering is if it is easier to get an East coast residency simply because of the school's geographic location? And would this make it more difficult to obtain a West coast residency if one decided that's where they wanted to train? I've heard that residency directors tend to choose students that have attended programs with which they are more familiar with. I'm not sure how factual that is though?

Residencies at hospitals affiliated with your school have a bias in favor of you but not sure about those at unaffiliated hospitals that just happen to be nearer to your school. I'd guess that latter bias is minimal if existent.

You will lose your deposit.

Does anyone know what the specific requirements are for the iPad for the class of 2020? My dad has some credit that's going to expire soon that I wanted to use.

For us the required was 64gb and they recommend the 128gb. Required was an iPad air or iPad 2, whatever was 10 inches can get the latest version of ios.

Some people however have iPad minis or 16gb of storage space and we haven't had any issues or people getting in trouble because of it.

Is cellular data recommended/required?

Any current students know if its possible to get involved in Research, especially at outside institutions like University of Miami or FIU? Also does the school give enough time off during the summer between 1st and 2nd year to do research?

Hey y'all current M3 here. Just dropping by to give a link to the Official NSUCOM Class of 2020 Facebook group for that our SGA has made for you all. There will be some peer mentors and upperclassmen in that group to help answer any questions you have about getting settled at Nova, study tips for classes, housing info, and you will get the latest updates from student government regarding any curriculum or policy changes that will be affecting you all.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/276204512582120/

If the people in the other group can go ahead and join this and remove that it would be easier so there aren't redundant groups.

If you have any questions regarding nova feel free to reach out via direct message as i don't really keep up with these threads.

Hi everyone,

For those who have been accepted/interviewed/will be interviewing in 2016, did you receive an information packet in mail? I have been reading this on previous years' forums (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/nsu-com-interview-discussion-thread.452644/). I only received a link to NSU's website in my invite: http://www.nova.edu/cwis/hpdasa/interview-day/com.html

But if anyone could kindly let me know if they received additional information in mail, that would be great!

thanks everyone

Yeah same here lol
Sent out 6 applications
1 rejection from california
never heard back from nova
other 4 were acceptances

makes me wonder how much of the NOVA class is actually still open since it is soooooo late in the cycle!

I'm on the same page as you. I've only received the website link. No additional info.

Yes I wonder the same - does anyone have any insights on how full the class is? Although I heard that there is a high acceptance rate for interviewees?

Early November interviewee with no email... Gotta laugh through the pain

The class is probably close to half full.

Admissions is interviewing 368 candidates for a class size of 230. If you got an interview, you have at least 65% chance of getting accepted. (I think it's almost 85% with the waitlisted interviewers because not all acceptees will matriculate).

Just got a letter in the mail saying I was placed on the wait list ( or "alternate" candidate as they call it).

Complete bummer but was hoping if anyone has any positive past stats regarding getting an acceptance from the wait list?

Well, I didn't make my $1250 deposit. Hoping my spot goes to one of you. If I don't get into one of my state MD schools, I will be going to LECOM-B. I don't see why I should spend roughly an extra $100k at Nova.

Hey I am a current 4th year student at NSU. I was also put on the wait list initially. I emailed Nova every 2 weeks with updates on what I was doing volunteer wise and how I was still very interested in going there. They take that stuff into consideration and will put it in your file. I harassed them enough to get an acceptance I guess haha. Don't be down on yourself! You are still in the mix. Stay positive and make your presence known! Best of luck to you.

Hey everyone, I am a current 4th year Nova student. I just wanted to say that for those of you that end up choosing NSU, you will whine about certain class policies and feel like your medical school is more unfair than the rest. Every student I have met feels the same way about their medical school as well. Nova prepared me very well to become a doctor and I have had no problem in any clinical rotation. You will learn from THE GREATEST OMM department which will be your one advantage to our MD counterparts. The hardest part of medical school is getting in! I wish you all the best and if anyone has specific questions on applying, boards, or matching into a residency don't be afraid to ask! For all you new accepted students I hope you get Zafonte because we are the best society!

Just wondering if it is appropriate to send in an update before I interview in January? I thought at first I could just talk about this during my interview but I wonder if I can write to them about some things I have been recently involved in - just so that they have everything on file, and perhaps the interviewers find those important to talk about?

I would say talk about it in person. They will ask you something along the lines of "is there anything you would like to add to your file since you submitted?". That is the right place to say it imo. That way you have a hidden card that you can use

Does anyone know when Nova starts looking at people in the waitlist and what is the probability of getting accepted off of it? I really want to go here and have been sending up dates monthly.

Keep sending updates! I was taken off the wait list four years ago around June/July. You definitely still have a chance. they will put the updates in your file. Just be persistent and let them know you are serious about them. Good luck!
