Nova Southeastern University (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What are yours two gpas and MCAT? If they're in your signature I apologize they don't show within the app. Thank you for letting me know, I'm encouraged to hear that. As an FL resident I am hopeful they will at least interview me.

Mine are in my signature but I don't mind... 3.6 overall, 3.8 science, 508, non-trad, RN, FL resident. I have no research.

Secondary submitted: 9/23
Complete phone call: 9/26
Pending candidate letter: 10/5
Interview Invite: 11/1

I did not send any updates specifically to Nova since the letter. However I did use the academic update period with AACOMAS in October, with the update verified mid-October. It didn't change my GPAs but did add my summer courses, in progress fall courses (which includes physics 2), and planned spring courses.

Thank you for sharing. You're quite a bit higher than me in stats. I've got about 300 hours of clinical experience which helps. Thanks and congratulations. I hope you get it.

Good look to you as well! And in case you didn't see I just updated my post with more dates and information.

For those of you that got email II yesterday, second email sent just now and new link has open interview dates in January! Was just about to call too... they probably realized after a flood of calls this morning...

Yeah I called twice, busy the first time, answering machine the second. Then I got that e0mail and scheduled for 1/10/17. I'm kinda bummed because I was hoping to slide into a November date. That way all my interviews would be clustered and I could hear results from all of them before deposits were due. Sigh.

+1 for a 1/10 interview

Edit: checked portal again and was able to grab 11/15!

When does the interview end? So I can plan accordingly.

It varies by year. Last year they interviewed 350-370 people and accepted a pretty good percentage. This year I heard they are more selective with more people getting waitlisted. We had quite a few classmates made it off the waitlist this year so don't lose hope!
Hmm yeah thats different than what they said at the interview. They said that last year they interviewed about 500 people, however i dont really know how many got accepted from those people.

Not sure if they were told to say that. If you refer back to last year's thread, multiple interviewees including me were told that they interviewed 37x people for our class. I interviewed pretty early and most of us were accepted.

Do you guys know how many students NOVA interviews and accepts per year? How many people are on the waitlist? Their class size is about 250 right?? PLEASE HELP!!!

So, I came across this and wanted to clarify some misinformation you've received.

In the past, yes, Nova was accepting double the class size due to drop deadline settling. HOWEVER, Nova has a new Dean who has changed this policy. If a school ends up being over enrolled when class starts (which happened to Nova a couple of years ago), they not only have to try to defer students, but they are EXHORBITANTLY fined (e.g., millions of dollars -- a large amount for every extra student).

Because Nova was recently hit with a large fine for this (because, for whatever reason, VERY FEW students dropped that particular year -- a Perfect Storm scenario), the new Dean has decided to accept the class size (n = 248), and waitlist the rest (as many have pointed out in this thread, there seems to be a larger proportion of waitlists going out this cycle than there has been historically). As students drop, more will obviously get pulled in. But, I wanted you to know that this policy is new.

So, because they aren't relying on a backstock of accepted students, this is likely very good news for the alternate list students.

Thank you for the corrections! You know how many they interview?

To add to this. The over-enrolling storm happened with class of 2019 and Dean Wallace became the dean prior to our interviews. They started to interview fewer applicants last year(370s vs 500+) and I would imagine this trend will continue to avoid over-enrolling.

This makes me feel a little better. Thanks friend. Currently sitting on the waitlist since September (interviewed in august )

Stay positive! NSU is receptive to updates and they love students who show interest in the school. If you have anything to update- let them know.

Appreciate the advice i've been lucky enough to email them 3x since getting waitlisted (new LOR, academic update 2x). Hopefully it works out in April/May :horns:

Oh wow thats great news! Thank you so much for taking the time and clearing that up!!

I dug up my old SDN info to chime in here to try to do my part to help shine a little light into how things have gone on my part.
Submitted AACOMAS application in mid-August, OOS, 3.47 overall GPA, 3.7 graduate, 30 MCAT, submitted my secondary on 5 September and got that same weird letter a lot of other applicants were mentioning a while back.

Frankly, I figured that letter from Nova meant I was stuck on the backburner, but two days ago they reached out for an interview! They didn't have anything open until the new year rolls around, but Nova easily fits into my top three choices for where I'd like to eventually end up. So if you haven't heard anything yet, keep the hope alive!

I submitted everything, and the portal has everything marked received on 9/6. Haven't gotten a complete email or phone call. Should I call them?

NSU is my top choice school, finished supplemental back in June and got a letter saying my file is on hold... 🙁 Does anyone know what the chance of getting an interview later in the cycle could be?
GPA 3.5 (bad grades freshman year but excellent upward trend), MCAT 505, tons of work and volunteer experience in a medical setting, international volunteering experience, international health major and spanish minor, working towards EMT certification right now and going to send an update letter. I'm wondering if my GPA is too low??

A couple people got pulled of the Pre-II Waitlist during their last mass II a couple days ago. I would say have faith your GPA is good friend !

Can anyone give me insight on interview day? How many interviews? With faculty and/or med student?

The under further review letter I received mentions sending them updates about new experiences, but there's no good way on their portal to complete this. Anyone have any luck submitting more information to admissions?

Didn't the letter mention an e-mail to send updates to?

@poloboy This is one example i saw and I am pretty sure there was another noted being a pending applicant at one point too.

Yea, they also said it was unranked, so movement on the list/pool isn't linear.

does anyone know if they will contact you if a LOR does not fulfill their requirement? I completed secondary a while ago but never got a complete call...

Does anyone have a good email for their DO program admissions? I just have a general admissions email and every time I ask questions, they tell me they'll forward it onto the DO program but then I never hear anything back...

I got an email on 10/21 saying "We have received the documents needed to review your file"

Was I supposed to also get a call? I logged into the portal and they have my letters, MCAT, app fee, and signature page. Looks like they aren't missing anything

Some people got a call, others emails, and others nothing when their file was complete. If everything is there you should be fine. If you are paranoid and want to call, call and the person who answers it will tell you the same thing.

anyone know when the next decisions will go out? If I have an interview 11/15, will I wait a specific amount of time or hear back whenever the next decisions go out? Thank you!

I'm wondering this too! I just moved my interview up to 11/15!!!! So that hopefully I will hear decisions back from all 3 interviews before any deposits are due.

I'm wondering now if I should go back to a January date. If we're not getting results from 11/15 until January, I would have already had to put a deposit down on a potential acceptance. (My other two schools seem to give results in 4-12 days). From browsing this thread it seems like people got post-interview results in a month, and that was early on and not around the holidays. Plus I would have to miss class for this date but not for January, and have interviews back-to-back days. I'm looking for anyone's thoughts/opinions to help me decide.

Congratulations on your interviews! You deserve it! 🙂

Is NOVA your top choice? Or are you hoping for in state MD's or something to get back to you later in the cycle? W.E you do, make sure you put your deposit somewhere. 2-3k is NOT worth risking your guaranteed shot at med school.

In my opinion, don't change it. The earlier the better. I have 3 interviews next week haha, worth the stress. & I'm missing all week of school

Even if nothing happens with my MD cycle and I get no more IIs, I have DO interviews on 11/11 and 11/14 that respond pretty fast. So I'm worried about deposits being due for them (hypothetically assuming I got an acceptance out of either interview) before I heard back from Nova. Honestly going into the cycle Nova was my first choice DO program but I feel pretty excited about all 3. But if it does happen I will put a deposit down to hold my seat if I get an acceptance from one of the first two and continue the cycle.

If NOVA takes a month to get back to you, worst case sceanario, you might have a week to decide on the deposit. I would have the money ready either way, and think ahead about if you really want to go (wait and see which ones you prefer from the schools you interview) and then after you interview in NOVA, see if you'd prefer to go to NOVA or which ever school you get accepted to. Feel free to PM me if you have interviewed at the same places as me (just look at my sig).
