**Official 2019 Pedo PASS/Interviews/Match/Non-Match**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From the OMS thread but can be changed to relate to peds. Happy Match Day and good luck to everyone!! Try and get some sleep :)

Michael Scarn said:

Match Eve poem by Mrs. Scarn

tWas the night before match day and all through the house
Not an applicant was sleeping, not even their spouse.
All the rank lists were numbered, submitted with care,
in the hopes that school "number one" soon would be theirs.

Hopefuls everywhere nestled snug in their beds,
while visions of third molars danced in their heads.
And me in my scrubs, i turned off the light,
and settled myself in for the world's longest night.

When from my iPhone there came such a clatter,
i sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the charger I ran in a dash; the screen came alive in a brilliant white flash.

The box on the screen blinked to notify me
It had just received an email that I needed to see.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear
but a subject line saying omfs match finally here!

In a rush of adrenaline, my patience was gone.
I'm done with this waiting, let the match bring it on!
As true as sdn my confidence came, and I whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

Now parkland! Now, Vanderbilt! Now, San Antonio or Unc!
On, Baylor! On, Oregon! On, Florida or Kentucky!
To my life's next six years! Now don't make me wait!
Now bring it on! Tell me! Show me my fate!

As if in slow motion, the email opened up.
My eyes scanned the page, my fingers crossed for luck.
In confusion I searched, come on, what's the catch?
And then, in awful clarity, the words, "you did not match".

My body went limp, eyes rolled back in my head.
My life flashed before my eyes. I fell back on the bed.
My throat was closing in! My lungs found no air!
My hands clawed my throat, and ripped out my hair!

This just couldn't be right! Was my mind playing tricks?
Could I really go on? Add another year to six?!
What had I done wrong? What qualities did I lack?
I must run far away and never come back!

"No, no!" moaned my voice in an unearthly tone.
I was ruined, defeated... The match had won!
I writhed in my misery, sweat soaking my scrubs.
I pled for some assistance, some help from above!

I opened my eyes to a glimmer of light, the clock on my nightstand showing midnight.
I bolted up straight, and off the bed I fell.
Somehow I had slept-and dreamed myself into hell!

I gasped for a breath, I reached for my phone.
No new messages! The email from hades was gone!
I laugh in hysterics, I feel I could dance! My fate yet undecided! I have another chance!

The night is still young. Several hours remain,
enough for at least 10 more nightmares of the same.
My pulse starts to slow, my head is finally clear.
There's still 6 dreaded hours until match day is here!

Hey everyone! I'm a current GPR resident at Helen Hayes Hospital and I wanted to give a quick overview of our program on here =) HHH is a fantastic residency for pediatric resident hopefuls (and he always takes residents post match on purpose!) We exclusively treat patients with special needs (intellectually disabled, medically compromised, psychiatric disorders, etc). We are in the operating room 1x/week treating about 6 patients a week under general anesthesia. By the time you graduate you will have approximately 150 GA cases for the year, which looks great on a resume for pedo! You also get to take seminars at Columbia University with the pediatric director and first year pediatric residents at Columbia. If you didn't get in this year and are looking for another option you should definitely consider this residency program!

My directors name is Dr. Marc Michalowicz and you can email him gpr (INSERT AT symbol here) helenhayeshosp (INSERT DOT HERE)org
Phone #: 845 786 4289
Program location: Helen Hayes Hospital55US-9W, West Haverstraw, NY 10993
(you must be able to travel into the city on Wednesdays for Columbia, public transportation is an option)
Number of positions: 2 (1 spot remaining)
Call Schedule: at home call. HHH is a rehab hospital so there is no emergency room call. (not an issue at all! Feel free to email me with any questions regarding this)
Stipend: ~$54,000 (I think!) before taxesAttendings are VERY used to residents applying to pedo and are super accommodating with giving you time off for interviews.
  • Just e-mail him your CV along with your PASS APP and a quick blurb about applying and you should be good to go!

Good Luck!

Instead of posting the normal screenshot and thank you, thought it would be fun to do something slightly different to reveal match day! If you're a fan of improv or sketch comedy, enjoy! Slight work

How do I find any post match openings ? Do I call every where or is there a list I can get from? Thanks

Always thought I'd help future applicants with this! Feel free to join in.

Program Matched: Combined program with great reputation and stipend (woo!!)
Dental School Attended: Public state school with good reputation
Year Earned DMD/DDS: 2019
International Student (yes/no): No
NBDE Part I / NBME scores: Pass/Pass
Class Ranking/Size: Top 20%; GPA 3.84
Externship(s)/where: 3 within driving distance of my school. Mix of hospital, combined, and academic. Did not extern where I matched. If I could go back I would extern at more of the places that I wanted to get into, instead of what was just close by.
Research: Poster presentation/winner of research competition
Extracurriculars: Lots of clubs, volunteering, student government, leadership, work experience (usual pedo stuff)
Programs Applied to/Interview Invites/Interviews attended/Programs Ranked: 14/10/8/7

If this helps, I never got any "signs" or "we will rank you to match" letters from where I matched! Actually, I got a lot of "signs" from another school that I did not end up matching to, so my advice is to rank based on what you really like and not how programs feel. I ranked a program #1 that had an amazing reputation even though I didn't 100% feel like I belonged there. Where I matched (my #2) is truly the best fit for how I learn and I am thankful everything worked out for me in the end!

Congrats to everyone and good luck to the next cycle of applicants.

I want to give some one reading this some inspiration. I was in the Army for 4 years and had my whole plan set that I would get into pedo once I exited in 2017. Well didn't happen. I applied to pedo in 2016 to 31 schools and only had 3 interviews(Nova, UAB, and St. Louis) Didn't match was waitlisted at Nova. Applied in 2017 to 5 schools(Nova, UAB, Howard, St. Louis, and Tennessee Lutheran) Only 1 interview at Nova and I declined interview because I just didn't feel like going through the interview process at that moment(I know stupid right ) Fast forward this year 3rd time around and applied to 3 schools(UAB, Nova, and Howard) I only had 1 interview invite and matched. My board scores were super low and gpa was terrible. While I was in army for 4 year I shadowed a few pediatric dentist, and did various presentations at elementary schools about oral health every year in the army nothing major though. I truly think the game changer was getting a job in a pediatric dental office for the last 16 months and fully immersing myself in the profession. So if you didn't match keep applying and don't give up because I didn't.

thanks for inspiration chocolatedentist, I applied first time for pedo and have been working in pedo office for last 3 years.

for all those available positions post match pedo/AEGD/GPR , is it possible to apply there even if I did not apply there at first ( before deadline) or its too late?

Hi everyone,
I'm writing this to encourage everyone that didn't match this year. I'm currently a Pedo resident at UF- Naples. My story was not straight forward. So I graduated back in 2012 and tried to get into PEDO about 4 times. Yes I applied 4 times! Spent (wasted) a lot of money too! It wasn't because my grades were bad because they weren't. I graduated top 20% in my class of 125 students. I got a 93 in boards part I and 85 in part II ( doesn't really count, so no one studies for the second one really) and was a pediatric clerk at the University of Maryland. So in paper, I thought I was a really good candidate. I think the hardest part was not getting interviews. In my four attempts, twice I had only one 1 interview- University of Maryland. The first time was my fault because I applied to only 3 schools late and the 2nd time I applied to about 13 schools. I almost went into depression because I just couldn't understand why. But God was so good to me through those hard times. My husband and I welcomed 2 sons, I received a loan repayment award from the state of Maryland and I'm now debt free. All these experiences happen for a reason. I know its hard to hear that now but I really believe God has a plan for all of us. The third time I applied, I got 5 interviews and even one of the faculty members told me that he wishes to see me next year, so I thought I was good. Another kept asking why I didn't match yet  . But guess what.. you know... I didn't match. That broke me really badly. I know what you are thinking. But I am not a bad interviewee ;). Long story short, I ended up doing a GPR after that (had practiced for 5 years at that point) to have the experience of seeing special needs patients in the OR- THATS AN OPTION IF THIS DOESN'T WORK OUT. I almost didn't apply again because it felt like it wasn't meant to be. But thanks to my GPR attendings and co-resident that encouraged me, I applied one last time and MATCHED. Life happens to all of us you know. Even worse, sad things happen to good people. I bet you know people that "don't deserve their good fortune" that get things the first time they try. But honestly, the hard times makes you a better person. So be encouraged.

Message me if you have any questions about where I interviewed at over the years- I believe I interviewed at almost 9 schools, 8 were University programs and externed at 3 through the process- didn't get any interviews there.

All things work together for good for those that love God and are called according to his purpose!

Anyone else think it was a little odd and tactless for Nicklaus Children’s to send a “rejection” letter to the people who didn’t match there? I interviewed there but didn’t even rank them because I disliked the program and didn’t see myself happy there at all; yet, they are the ones “rejecting” me? Hmm

Hello everyone! Congratulations to all those who matched! To those of you who didn't this cycle, I just wanted to let you know of a PGY-2 position/pediatric fellowship at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. We are a very busy program, with each resident seeing an average of 12 children per day. We provide experience in the OR and the future resident will have experience in nitrous sedation. We have regular lectures and the fellow will be involved in journal review as well as possible research projects. We are also hoping to provide rotations to the Pediatric Emergency Department as well as the Pediatric Clinic. We provide a competitive stipend as well as opportunities to engage in various external pediatric lectures. So far both of our residents who applied to pediatric residency this year matched. If you or anyone you know may be interested, please forward have them contact myself (Dr. Van Eyndhove @ [email protected]) and/or Dr. Bhuiya (the GPR program director @ [email protected]). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

@crocdoc19 Do you mind mentioning where? I'm trying to see what programs are still having open interviews. A few I've contacted said that they've stopped, and they haven't updated with the NMS yet.

In CA?

That's like on the other side of the world from me. I'll look into some of the GPR/AEGD programs. Thanks again! And good luck!

This was my third time applying so please do not lose sight of your goals and keep trying. One of the things I felt helped me this cycle was visiting the programs and showing them that I will be a great fit. A lot of the places I interviewed at twice, the second time around I was more comfortable and was able to show my personality more. I also took some pedo specific CE courses that set my application apart from the rest.

This was my first time applying, and I'm very grateful to have matched. I did not think I would get accepted due to my poor stats. I worked for 2 years in corporate/private practices but I did not see many kids. I realized after 2 years that I didn't enjoy adult dentistry too much and that I had more fun seeing pediatric patients. I think it's helpful to write a truthful personal statement, ask for letters of recommendation early, take a nice 2x2 photo, pick out programs, make sure you know which one requires ADAT/additional fees, original copies of NBDEs/Boards/DAT, submit your application before July 1st, and interview honestly, just be the best version of yourself at interview. Make sure you show up early, best to wait than to arrive late. If you want to give yourself the best chance at matching, apply to many programs, rank them all, look at the big picture. For me, I can live anywhere for two years, the people in the program is important to me because I'll have to be in that environment for 2 years, and I'm glad I matched to one of my top choices.

This was my first time applying, it helped to visit a couple of programs before applying. I have a master’s in pedo from India so that appealed to some programs while I believe some felt I wouldnt be trainable. Having a US education background helps, which I didnt. However, plenty of paper and poster presentations, Pedo CE programs regularly and few publications were the strong points of my CV. Be yourself, stay humble yet sell yourself, mingle with the residents. Also, do your homework well, I pretty much stalked all faculty members and residents on linkedin, researchgate and sometimes FB too;). Go with the pace of the interview, I pretty much had a funny interview at Rutgers , and serious/ semi- serious at other places.
