I think you should still apply!!! ESP bc it’s technically a month away. They will still review your application
What's the average number of schools you guys applied to? I did 10! Also what is considered competitive? It seems most people are out of school and I'm still in my last year?
Thank you very much for the insight! Great advice and perspective 🙂In my GPR, 2 peds residents were accepted - one who had just finished a hospital-based GPR elsewhere and one who completed our program's GPR a few years prior then worked for a few years in peds clinics. However, my GPR was strictly hospital-based, very fast-paced and heavy with peds patients - even for us GPR residents, so each program may find something different that "stands out" as being an application that is a fit for their program. An OKU-inducted, research-heavy applicant really would hate it there lol. I also know a few from dental school who got into peds straight out of school - both in and outside of OKU and both got into hospital-based programs without having done a GPR beforehand.
What may be a fit for one is not a great fit for another, so you can be a competitive applicant, but just not a great match. I also know people who were accepted that may not have been competitive applicants, but great matches for their programs (they often are in GPR and apply to their own program's peds program because having worked there for a year means less orientation for them and they clearly know what they are getting into).
Having interviewed GPR applicants alongside attendings, I can tell you that the dental student mindset is very different than that of a resident (and that's ok and expected since it's totally different environments). So I'd say to keep that in mind when you interview so they know you're aware of what residency entails. You want to be adaptable to a new environment and a teamplayer (there's clinical requirements in both GPR and peds residencies) and if a dental student can articulate that well and convincingly, I have no doubt at all that you could be a competitive applicant for many programs.
Thank you very much for the insight! Great advice and perspective 🙂

I have received a completion email from UCONN. I haven't applied for the other 2 programs.Did anyone get a confirmation from UConn, UIC or Boston?
Does anyone know how many people these programs usually interview? I know it varies based on program size, but for example, if a program has 3 residents, how many applicants do they give interviews to?

I don’t know for sure, but from what I’ve gathered from my own apps is 30-40. I imagine much beyond that it gets pretty hard to rank interviewees as wellDoes anyone know how many people these programs usually interview? I know it varies based on program size, but for example, if a program has 3 residents, how many applicants do they give interviews to?
Or nemours? Kind of disappointed not getting an interview 🙁any idea/hints in their email that Zucker might be sending out more interviews?
Thanks so much! Best of luck to you 🙂The Nemours email referenced a morning session, which potentially means there is an afternoon session. It seems like so much is different than previous years so you never know. Good luck!
I feel your pain! It will just take one! Let’s hope for the best and I rly hope you get an interview!!!I feel discouraged. This is my third time applying. I was an okay student in dental school, did a gpr , been in practice for three years, had stellar references and a good statement and I just don’t understand why I don’t have any interviews yet this cycle. Do schools/programs have rounds of interviews or is it those who apply early get preference. I guess I’m just feeling tired from the process.

If you don’t mind me asking, what is the nature of the jobs you had since working? I’m pretty much in an identical situation based on what you said but it’s still too early for me to get interviews because of where I applied.
I applied to 22 schools/programs.How many schools did you apply to? Were you limited to a certain geographic area that’s more competitive?
From my very anecdotal research, I’ve determined that some schools will see your time in private practice as a strength that offsets your academic history. Others won’t. Gotta cast a wide net and find the programs that value your experiences.
That’s exactly how many I applied to!I applied to 22 schools/programs.
It’s sad that grades are used as a first step to filter out applicants. The peds program director at Stony Brook used to be a faculty at my dental school and would rail against grades. He got into peds with a 2.9 and would always stress how grades weren’t a great tool. But hey... what can ya do lol.
“Back in their day,” peds wasn’t competitive. Flash forward and now it has more applicants than other specialty. It’s sad that grades are used as a first step to filter out applicants.
