To all those who have applied to uconn AEGD, I want to share my experiences as a resident. I highly recommend not doing this program. They tell you they place many implants each month. However, only some specific residents do it, the way patients are distributed is favorable only to a specific group. I highly recommend doing a GPR program over this. You will waste a whole year of your life not gaining much! The director has changed since 2021 and he isn’t experienced in placing implants like the previous director. The new director is very conservative and only favors a specific group of people! The new director is very unprofessional and gossips with his favorite residents behind other residents! It’s very toxic environment that won’t let you grow at all. You will not grow at all in this program, total waste of your time. I wish I had gone to one of the GPR programs I applied to but everyone spoke highly of uconn AEGD. However, the director has changed and program has gone far way down! And, the city has nothing to offer you either, very boring city. Avoid going there. Best of luck to everyone!

^this sounds like a post from someone who doesn’t understand what “you get what you put in” means. As a current resident here I can say that this is a highly inaccurate description of the program. Almost all 30 residents have placed implants this year, are we all the favorites now? Hah. The few people who have not placed implants yet are genuinely not interested in implants or have not put in any effort into securing these types of cases.
If I had to pick a residency again, I’d choose UConn AEGD all over again. The amount of experience you get as a general dentist is unparalleled.

Were acceptances sent out for Zablocki V.A. Great Lakes - Milwaukee, WI AEGD? Interviews were on 11/1.

I have also heard nothing up until this point, not even a notice about whether all spots are filled. I was disappointed that they (as well as a number of other programs btw) interviewed the number of people they did for the number of spots they had. Considering they are non-match and force those accepted to commit or decline before they even have an opportunity to fairly assess other programs, there is absolutely no reason they had to interview that many people. The window to respond to an acceptance is so short that unless you are somehow lucky to have concurrent offers, you are left with deciding between taking your offer knowing you might not get any other offers, or betting on more favorable choices coming through knowing everything goes back up in the air. Most people would choose the earlier. I wished they only interviewed those who they intended to accept as long as the interview went okay, and if they had unfilled spots after the round of acceptances then host later interview sessions, particularly if they are asking us to foot the travel bill to attend the interview.

I think some programs send out multiple rounds of invitations, and others try to refill candidate positions that may have been lost to non-match programs. I recently received an invitation from a program that sent out their first interviews about 2 weeks ago.

Hi all, just wanted to share my experience with the GPR program at Highland Hospital in Oakland. I went back for a GPR after 4 years in private practice because of my passion to treat patients with special health care needs.

1. we take patients with special health care needs to the OR (operating room) every Thursday, and every other Monday. Full mouth dental rehabilitations- wisdom teeth EXTs, fills, cleanings, the whole nine yard.
2. one month rotation with omfs- omfs is a 4 year residency program- you will learn biopsies, extractions, do implant consults, tmj and botox consults. I didn't learn a whole lot here. theres a lot of hierarchy in the omfs program and they treat gpr residents the same as PGY 1 omfs residents- so basically you end up doing a lot of grunt work. Its a good way to figure out if you're cut out for an omfs program or not 😛 we are going to recc shortening the length of this rotation to 2 weeks which is a CODA requirement for the enxt years batch since we do way more wisdom teeth in our gpr clinic anyway.
3. 2 weeks in peds- excellent- stainless steel crowns, fills, nitrous, and if youre lucky, a baby root canal. this is a very fun rotation
4. we have an amazing endodontist 2 days a week. if all your patients show up it is possible to do atleast 8 root canals a week! i interviewed at several programs across california and didnt come across this anywhere. dr scott (past ucsf and uop prof) is def a highlight of our program!
4. 2 weeks in anesthesia and 2 weeks in internal medicine. anesthesia- they let you intubate and everything! highland is a trauma level 1 center so theres never a shortage of cases!
5. we go on call minimum once week a month, some months its more than that because other residents are on rotation. that can and will lead to severe burnout. yesterday and day before I began to cry spontaneously at home. i was just so tired and stressed and wanted to throw my pager against the wall. residency is hard.
6. the leadership of our program is really unique. dr venkatesh is the program director- really understanding, kind and also bloody good at dentistry. shes someone you can talk to and who will not judge you. if you are burning out or going through stuff at home, she is very understanding about it and will make room for you.
7. we have a pros attending twice a week

overall here are the ups-
1. endo twice a week (although i do endo everyday because dr scott has made it look so easy that it has made me lose my anxiety towards endo, oh we use waveone btw!)
2. treatment for patients with special health care needs- oral conscious sedation, desensitization and full mouth rehab in the OR has taught me so much about the medical side of things. It also helps you become a better advocate for these patients, and hopefully will inspire you to invite and treat these patients into your practice after
3. treating pts with complex medical histories- and getting super comfortable with that. never having a shortage of pts.

As of now, we have a Non-Match General Practice Residency spot available at West Virginia University for the upcoming 2023-2024 year.
The WVU GPR program is a 1-year program affiliated with the WVU School of Dentistry and Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
We are looking for hard-working individuals to join our team this upcoming 2023-2024 year.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:
1) Every other week block schedule consisting of one week of resident general dentistry clinic with high level of autonomy and the other week consisting of seeing patients in the speciality clinics of OMFS, prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and pediatrics
2) Hospital dentistry operating room cases with OR block time every Friday to treat medically complex patients including frequent full mouth dental rehabs
3) Shared call responsibilities between the two GPR residents every other week for infections and dentoalveolar related issues (call is covered by OMFS residents on the other weeks)

Educational opportunities provided by the program will include:
1) Weekly oral pathology seminar in the fall
2) Didactic course on History and Physical taking in the fall

3. 2 weeks in peds- excellent- stainless steel crowns, fills, nitrous, and if youre lucky, a baby root canal. this is a very fun rotation
4. we have an amazing endodontist 2 days a week. if all your patients show up it is possible to do atleast 8 root canals a week! i interviewed at several programs across california and didnt come across this anywhere. dr scott (past ucsf and uop prof) is def a highlight of our program!
4. 2 weeks in anesthesia and 2 weeks in internal medicine. anesthesia- they let you intubate and everything! highland is a trauma level 1 center so theres never a shortage of cases!
5. we go on call minimum once week a month, some months its more than that because other residents are on rotation. that can and will lead to severe burnout. yesterday and day before I began to cry spontaneously at home. i was just so tired and stressed and wanted to throw my pager against the wall. residency is hard.
6. the leadership of our program is really unique. dr venkatesh is the program director- really understanding, kind and also bloody good at dentistry. shes someone you can talk to and who will not judge you. if you are burning out or going through stuff at home, she is very understanding about it and will make room for you.
7. we have a pros attending twice a week

overall here are the ups-
1. endo twice a week (although i do endo everyday because dr scott has made it look so easy that it has made me lose my anxiety towards endo, oh we use waveone btw!)
2. treatment for patients with special health care needs- oral conscious sedation, desensitization and full mouth rehab in the OR has taught me so much about the medical side of things. It also helps you become a better advocate for these patients, and hopefully will inspire you to invite and treat these patients into your practice after
3. treating pts with complex medical histories- and getting super comfortable with that. never having a shortage of pts.
