For those who did not match this cycle, what opportunities (besides working in private practice) are y'all looking to explore to boost your candidacy for future cycles? Insight from those of you with previous experience with this situation is greatly appreciated as well.

GPR NY ? Does anyone know if there are any GPR programs that are favourable to get into Peds Programs in NY ?
Or other GPR / AEGD programs in other states that are favouring for students that are already at their site ?

Any updates on Post Match positions/interviews?

Can someone post the post -match GPR spots?

Also, congrats on all those who matched. To those who didn't, don't give up hope! Like has been said on here previously, there is space enough in this profession for all those who are passionate to do it.

Not sure that this is the right place for this, but I just wanted to post about a potential job opportunity/resume builder. I have been working in a private pedo office in northern California (bay area-- Santa Rosa). It's been a great associateship with a great mentorship by the owner doctor who has mentored me closely (he just manages business, there is another pediatric dentist who is an associate too at another office). He is actively seeking for someone to replace me and is open to tutoring someone interested in peds. It has honestly been a great move for me and has helped me prepare for residency and likely been a reason that I matched this cycle. If you're interested, reach out to me and I can give you more info.

My advice:

Programs Applied to/Interview Invites/Interviews attended/Programs Ranked: 25,4,4,3

This has been a long and arduous journey for me. It was my third time applying. I applied in 2018 the first time to 12 programs, had 1 interview and was accepted into a non match position. Could not join due to multiple reasons and it was very disheartening.
2nd time I applied to 33 programs (in 2020) and had 6 interviews+ 1 post match interview. I applied this year and had 4 interviews- 2 of the programs I interviewed with last year invited me again this year for an interview and I was very very very fortunate to match at one of them:)

This message is to encourage every single person applying. If you got in the first try, great! If not, and if this is really your passion, try again. I think the two most important things are the CV and the essay. The two things that probably helped me were being persistent and luck!

I met some amazing people this cycle virtually and even made really good friends that I can not wait to meet in person. The application cycle can be daunting. I wish everyone gets what they truly desire!

How does that work? Your friend got the scholarship and put it on hold during residency?

Hi! I’m an NHSC scholarship program participant, currently in service as a pediatric dentist. What are your questions?

NHSC allows participants to postpone service obligations for the length of a residency (there are some residencies that are not allowed - OMS, Endo, Perio, etc.). After residency they will start their three years of service.

That's my understanding of it at least.

That is correct. The NHSC programs want to drive providers into primary care. Scholars can do approved residencies, which for dentists are AEGD/GPR, Peds, and public health.

Has there been any word on the remaining NYU Langone Post Match positions?

Program Matched: My top choice
Dental School Attended: University of Colorado
Year Earned DDS: 2019 (Advance Standing DDS)
GPR: OU Children’s Hospital, 2021
International Student (yes/no): No, but I am in H4 visa with work permit
NBDE Part 1 and 2 /ADAT Score: 550
Class Ranking/Size: top 25%
Externship(s)/where: 6 -> Temple, Boston Children, Ohio State, Colorado, UIC and Yale – All are in person pre pandemic
Extracurriculars: Most of outreaches (COMOM, Give Kids a Smile, Special Olympics), Lead Tooth Mobile Dental Van and Preceptor Dentist
Programs Applied to/Interview Invites/Interviews attended/Programs Ranked: 16/8/8/8/Matched in Top Choice

First time I got matched to Pedo focused GPR which helped me a lot to learn and grow.

Second time I had 2 interviews but didn’t match. It was very disappointing.

BUT I PERSISTED. I started working for a community clinic which gave plenty of opportunities to treat children, volunteer outreach community events, lead tooth mobile van and teach dental students as preceptor dentist. In addition, I was staying connected with program directors and current residents. It helped big time.

Yes, the third time I applied early, had super strong PEFs, one-page crispy statement. It clicked.

Programs Interviewed: UMN, UNMC, OHSU, Temple, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Mount Sinai, and St. Barnabas Hospital. In addition, I also received Jamaica Hospital (Meet and Greet session) and Boston Children’s (waitlisted).

All the interviewers asked about my preceptor dentist and tooth mobile experience.

There are a lot of amazing people I have met in this journey. In which Ashly (I am sure most of the applicants know her) was the one who was always there for me. Thank you very much for everything Ashly. Thank you to my mentors. No words to express my gratitude.

Thank you “T00thDr” for keeping this group super active and up to date on interview calls.

All the best for future applicants.

Hey, I'm the Ashly she's talking about! I'll be sharing tips for applying to peds on this thread/you can post a question HERE. I don't want it to get lost among the other messages about program acceptances.

If I haven’t heard from post match by now should I give up 😬

Hello, I'm applying for this upcoming cycle. Where do I find the information on the number of letters of recommendation? And how many do I need? Dean's Letter vs. Standalone letter?

Agree with @ptm2016 That is a great place to start.

In general, you'll need your deans letter with 4-5 other letters (one should be from the peds director and 1-2 more should be from peds faculty)

If you do that you'll cover like 98% of program's needs.

But, again, the PASS search engine will give you a good idea about programs that have more strict rules. I emailed a couple with questions about my LORs and they got back to be and told me I'm good to go and can apply. Don't be scared to reach out to programs!

Does anyone have a list of questions for interview?

Hello everyone 👋
Is it true that programs only consider applications which are sent on the first two weeks or first month ?

Because my inbde exam is at the end of June and I’m not sure if I should apply to programs without it just to be considered and then send my results later? Or just apply once when I receive my scores.

Is it a good idea to mention about your externships or shadowing experience to different residency programs in your resume?

Hello, for those who are re applying, can we use previous evaluations on pass? (Also, haven’t found a new thread yet for this cycle so if you have let me know please)

Not true. They will still look and consider applications up until the deadline. I remember my program director laying out all the applications in his office and narrowing down his choices. No mention of some pseudo-deadline aside from the official one.

I did, it helped show my interest in exploring the specialty. I interviewed at programs that I did not extern at and it was never brought why I didn't visit them versus other programs.

Thank you. I have done 2 externships and 7 shadowing days at different residency programs, would you recommend to put all of them in my resume? Does it affect to get interview from the programs where you have not performed shadowing days or externships?

Hi, I think we can use transcript and NBDE score from previous evaluations on pass..

Thank you. I have done 2 externships and 7 shadowing days at different residency programs, would you recommend to put all of them in my resume? Does it affect to get interview from the programs where you have not performed shadowing days or externships?
Sure I think it would help to put it on your resume. I don't think it will affect if you get an interview from programs where you did not visit. I received invites from schools that I did not visit and listed my externships on my resume.

This is all true for most programs!

I agree that it is not a bad idea to put all of your externships and shadowing on the CV; however, don't fill up a page with seven individual shadow days. It's ok to put it all into one section of the CV - a small paragraph that lists each program for your shadow days.

That all being said... There are some programs that pick mainly from their externs. Cincinnati asks specifically on the additional questions section if you attended an externship with them for example. So, what I am saying is, if you have a couple programs that you REALLY want to attend, make sure you inquire about externship opportunities.

Sounds like you're on the right track.

Hello, there doesn’t seem to be a 2023 peds thread yet so I don’t know where else to ask this- Aside from my undergraduate dental school transcripts which I will upload on Pass, do schools require transcripts from a non-dental related MSc that I’m currently enrolled at?

No, they do not require anything outside of undergrad and dental school. That being said, I completed a non-dental MSc and I chose to upload the transcripts because the grades would only have helped by app... Totally up to you.

Thank you! I was thinking the same, because I also have straight As but I was worried it would only confuse programs if they don’t expect anything other than undergrad in pass. Would it help if I mentioned it in my personal statement?
