Honestly the key to interviewing is pretty straightforward: be yourself! The purpose of the interview process is to allow the program to determine if they want to work with you for the next two years AND if you want to work with the program members for the next two years. If either part of the equation, program or applicant, are not authentic and portray themselves inaccurately, it has the potential to cover up characteristics that would make the training environment a miserable experience for the next two years. I always recommend looking at your life and highlighting three or four things in your life that you are proud of or you feel make you a person people would want to work with and then in the interview just unapologetically be yourself and discuss those points. You may truly want to be a pediatric dentist, but it is better for everyone involved, including patients, if you and your program members are not miserable while training. So if you are yourself and the program portrays itself authentically and you or they don’t feel it’s a match that is better than you trudging through the next two years of training because you’re miserable. There’s no secret formula where a person can “game” the interview system, match, happily train for the next two years, and successfully practice as a pediatric dentist in their career. One link in that chain will crumble if neither you nor the program are 100% authentic with each other! Good luck in the interview process, to get this far in life I know that you are an amazing human being with qualities and characteristics that would make you an excellent resident! So highlight those and enjoy the process! How are you all preparing for the interviews? Any tips or threads to follow will be helpful!!

Hey there! For the main school list: email or phone call (I assume email)? Are these virtual or in-person?Woodhull invite sent 11-1-21. Interviews on Dec. 1 and 2
Hey! email received and in person!Hey there! For the main school list: email or phone call (I assume email)? Are these virtual or in-person?
Personally, I did not put many achievements (maybe 3). I did apply broadly (20) programs and have received 12 interviews. Has anyone looked at your personal statement? That has been brought up a lot during my interviews. As well as my CV!Two questions, how many "experiences" and "achievements" did you guys put in your application and do you think undergraduate GPA plays a role in getting you an interview? I was in top 3% in dental school and currently work in pediatrics but undergrad GPA was not good and I failed NBDE part II the first time. Trying to figure out why I haven't received any interviews / what I did wrong. Any advice helps.
Hi! I have a Q&A coming up on friday? Is it possible to have a quick chat, my last interview was like a 100 years ago and I'm very rusty. In your message, you mentioned about coaching applicants. Please helppppHi, I’m a 1st year peds resident, and I wanted to drop some words of encouragement and tips for you all.
If you applied this cycle and got many interviews, if you applied this cycle and got no interviews at all, if you are a reapplicant, if you applied early, if you applied late, if you feel anxious, nervous, excited about what this cycle will hold…I’m proud of you.
Every feeling you have is validated. I want to encourage you to think about the moments that lead up to the interview cycle. This is about more than just a single interview or application. This is a culmination of all your efforts across many years. You are spectacular, and I am really proud of you.
It may be hard to hear now, but if youre worried about not matching, the *worst* that could happen is that you create an even better app, get invites to even more programs, and get to attend one of your top choices. No matter one, don’t lose hope, there are kids out there that you will impact so profoundly, they will never forget you.
What ive seen among the applicants that I coach is that no one is having a “bad” interview per se, but given how challenging it is to match, I remind applicants its not enough to have just a good interview, you want to have a great interview--one that is memorable and leaves a lasting impact. That’s how you can ensure when the program goes to deliberate, you are at the top of their minds. To those of you who are interviewing, I've listed a few of my coaching tips:
BREATHE! You are well equipped for a future in pediatric dentistry. If not now, then later. There is enough space for all us here, and I welcome you whole heartedly to the best specialty there is. Perhaps Im biased 😆 I wish you all the very best!
- When asked “Why this program?” Its not enough to just list what the program has to offer. Further your answers by expressing how what a program offers aligns with your mission, goals or values. This is how you help programs understand that you will be a good match for them. The very reason you enjoy a program may be the very reason someone is not interested in a program, but creating the link between yourself and the program paints the picture of you actually being there in the future.
- Defend. Your. Answers. I often remind applicants, you are stranger to the people interviewing you. Sure, they read your application, but those are just words. Defend your answers by providing interviewers specific examples of whatever skill or quality you express. I remind applicants providing a long list of traits is not memorable nor impactful. Imagine someone on the street walking up to you and saying “I’m compassionate, generous, welcoming, hard working, determined…” it would be hard to believe all of that because you have no context. Now, if they explain to you using specific examples, essentially defending their answers, these qualities begin to have more meaning to them.
- Ask compelling questions. Applicants I work with will often ask me if its okay to ask a program “How can the program be improved, whats the best part of this program, what type of experiences are residents getting” etc. And again, these are not bad questions. In fact, theyre fundamental. But because they are fundamental, interviewers already a pre-programmed response ready to go. Now when you ask compelling questions, you challenge the person interviewing you to think a little bit longer. This helps make this time more memorable. Think about how you feel when you walk right out of an exam. You hardly remember the questions that you could recall the answers to immediately. What you do remember however are the questions that made you think a little bit longer. This is no different in the interview.
Once you matched, you are to honor it. Only way of doing post match is if you didn’t matchWhat happens if you match into a program, and find out later that your #1 program of choice (whom never invited you to interview) is seeking post-match residency spots? Can you apply and reach out to them?
Hey there! I got an email for an interview invite, but soon after, I also got an email from them saying:Uconn sent out invites, dates are Nov 15th, 22nd, Dec 6th and Dec 13th. Interviews are virtual.
I got that too i think it's a rejectionHey there! I got an email for an interview invite, but soon after, I also got an email from them saying:
“Our interview acceptance was just emailed to selected candidates.

Our faculty team thoroughly appreciated learning about your journey thus far.

Yeah, you're good. You got invited and that rejection was just sent to the entire applicant group. It's lazy and I have had two other programs do that same thing this year, haha! But I agree, give them a call to confirm 🙂But I got an email for the interview invite too (10 mins before I got this email).
