OFFICIAL COLUMBIA COUNTDOWN THREAD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can understand how discouraging that is, jargon...although you know what?! I'm only ~40 blocks away from Columbia, but I'm not expecting to get the letter until at LEAST Tuesday, myself, because the mail services at my school is so darn slow!!! When I received notification from Einstein, for example -- I'm in NY, but it took four days for me to actually get the darn letter! Most other SDNers had heard by then.

So I can sympathize with you! Hang in there, we'll be done soon.....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

they SEND it friday. we MAY get it saturday, but it's unlikely. i GO to columbia and it still takes a good week before i get anything they send to get through our mail services.

also, it's president's day on monday, so it looks like no one is hearing anything till tuesday.

supposedly frantz calls a few of the lucky ones.

the student i stayed with said frantz called him BEFORE feb and thanked him so much for coming to interview and that he was looking forward to seeing him come the fall...

Oh, if we could all only be the lucky ones who get a phone call from the man himself. Time to check the mail as well as the answering machine...

Matt,

Was that student a good looking rugby player?

I heard mighty dean personally calls (160X3min each?) if you got in. I might be the exception but I have to admit I had the best interview at columbia (although extremely short) we talked about a program called "man in the pan" for a while (I didn't actually know he was responsible for it until after the interview when he told me in the hall) However, on that positive note, my pre-med advisor already warned me that I am looking at a waitlist at the best.....

I am with you and praying for at least a waitlist.... a rejection would be pretty rough to take at this point -- after interviewing in October I have had lots of time to think about how wonderful the school is.

Yeah but 800 people on the waitlist is rediculous even if they take 1/2 the class from the waitlist you are still looking at almost a 1:10 of getting off ouch...they make this process even more painful than it already is

160calls*3min each.... about 8 hours on the phone? NO WAY. i'm waiting for the us postal service....

I heard from a Columbia medical student that is on the admissions committee that last week they sent out all of the rejection letters and that everyone who has not yet heard is either accepted or waitlisted. That seems to confirm what the admissions office said ealier this week.

alright! 900 person waitlist!!!

This has got to be a joke.......I am going to cry.....I love New York.....

"Reporting live from Columbia Admissions office - Admissions officers are busily wrapping up the final decisions of the class of 2006. Let's see what Dean Mrantz has to say:

Reporter: "Sir, how is the process coming along"?

M: "Well right now, we're in a tight bind - all our applicants are stellar students which obviously makes it hard to decide on who enters our golden prestigous doors of P&S".

Reporter: "So what have you done to improve the situation"?

M: "Well upon the ingenius advice of various members, we have placed our applicants into several divisions based upon physical appeal....so we've got the Blondes over there, the Brunettes her, the buffed bods in that corner. It's all been devised very strategically and we hope to have a final decision made on everyone by midnight tonight"

Reporter: "Well that's all folks - back to the studio. And now for the weather..."

Arrrghh I can't wait any longer! Sorry I'm just antsey.

<sigh> to tell you the truth, i've already decided against columbia. but boy would it be nice to have in my hand an acceptance letter

My fellow dudes (and dude-etts),

I am getting quite nervous over this Columbia thing. Do you think we can call them tomorrow and find out what's the dilly, or not?

BOTS

ah yes, D-Day.

welcome to the jungle. of course this means nothing because all of us wont hear anything until tuesday, and besides, almost all of us will be waitlisted anyway. no, columbia's not coming through till august.

Okay, HERE WE GO....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

haha E'01, LOL! I really was! I don't even know why I read this thread, I didn't even apply to Columbia.

But good luck to all of you!!

I just got the call from Dr. Estes, and words cannot even describe how happy I am! =)

Thank you guys so much for all your advice about medschool and life in general; I have been reading this site for the last 4 years and know just how intelligent and helpful all of you are THX!

WOOHOOO!

really?!?!?

wow!!! congrats!!!

so wait, was dr. estes your interviewer?

Wow! Congratulations, duck! I was kidding around about this sort of thing, but it really happened to you! Great!!! :D

PS - I just deleted my thread about getting a call from Frantz. Since it seems people are getting ACTUAL calls, I don't want to be the source of confusion or anguish. Sorry guys, I just thought it would be funny - but is seems I was mistaken - I can admit that - so good luck again everyone and congrats to modemduck on a truly great accomplishment! :)

It's okay, you're good :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! My cousin goes there and loves it.

There's one acceptance, not to be negative or anything, but statistically that means 7 or 8 of us on this site are no go (although lets hope we have a high concentration of acceptances and beat the statitics.) Does anyone know if they call everyone who was accepted of if just some interviewers decide to call?

Everyone, CHECK YOUR MAIL!!!!! Some of the decisions were mailed out YESTERDAY, Priority Mail! I'm IN!!! I can't believe it...I'm still shaking!! I'm so ecstatic! I really wasn't expecting this!!!!!!!!

I think interviewers just decide on their own to call accepted students; I just received word in the mail.

For those interested, the thumbs up comes as a packet (i.e., thick envelope).

I really, really hope to hear good news from all of you, too...I'm rooting for you!!!!

Congratulations, pal. I hope to be getting the letter soon, although if they sent it priority, it's not getting here (Maryland) 'till tomorrow at the earliest.

I told you all along that you'd get in! and you never believed me!! silly girl. :) congrats and go celebrate.

Congrats MorningLight!!!!!! Go get drunk immediately and celebrate!!!!

Yep, I hate to say it Katie, BUT I TOLD YA SO! Hehe. Really though, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations! You deserve it and I am very happy for ya. :)

Congratulations, MorningLight!! :D That is so awesome!! Have a fun celebration!!! :D

Damn! I'm leaving tomorrow for a west coast interview trip. Guess there's not much chance of mail making it all the way up here today (my mailman hasn't come yet, so of course, I'm foolishly hoping).

Gosh, reading this thread is like reading a high intensity drama, I can't wait to turn the page and see what will happen next...and I didn't even apply to Columbia:)

Good luck to all of you:)

CONGRATS! Columbia is a great schooL!! Too bad I'll be in Chi-town when the letter (good or bad) arrives!

CONGRATS KATIE!!!

nothing for me across the street.

i am wondering if all acceptances went out yesterday and all waitlists/rejections, or if my traditionally very slow mail services is holding anything up. argh. im going nuts.

Congrats Katie! :p

Here it is in writing for all to see -- I am officially pledging my first born child if they will let me in. I will name it Columbia and the only color it will wear will be Columbia's color, that lovely shade of baby blue....

it may be a rad school...

but i don't want to go to south america for school.

--spicoli

ValleyGal that is blasphemous!!! You are from Duke... why would you ever want to dress your first baby in Carolina blue?

GO BLUEDEVILS!

And that should show how bad I want it that I would be willing to put on carolina blue -- by the way, looking forward to our second whipping of the heels in basketball. off topic, but trash talking is always a favorite.

GO TERPS (or any team playing duke).. woot

ok, so we're expecting that another batch will hear today via priority mail, right? I'd LOVE to be among them, but am feeling kind of doubtful because a) my interview didn't seem to go all that well adn b) I live on the west coast. How long would priority mail take coast-to-coast? i.e. should I be devastated if I don't hear today?

By the way, I talked to their admissions office yesterday over the phone to check on some detail in my file (the lady could presumably see the decision that had been made on it but said they "never tell over the phone"--i.e. she's not allowed), and she told me rejections had been mailed 10 days ago--i.e. all that was going out now was waitlists and accepts. But I guess they practically waitlist all interviewees anyway, huh? Somebody had mentioned that there are a lot . . .anybody know the stats?

Here is the deal. I just received a normal-size envelope, not priority. It basically said I was a highly ranked applicant but they could not offer me a spot now. It was signed by Frantz. There's a stamped envelope with a form to mail back if you want to be on the wait list. It's what I expected but I'm still kind of upset, as many of you will be in the coming days.

ValleyGal: I'm also a Dukie. So maybe it's not such a bad thing. At least I don't have to wear THAT color.

PS For any NYU applicants out there. This is interesting. I also got a letter postmarked Feb. 15, saying they were writing to inform me that my application is still under consideration. I thought they were supposed to make all decisions by now. What does this mean? How long are they going to string us along? I am really interested in NYU and hope it won't be too much longer.

wow abefroman, sorry to hear that. I remember seeing your stats and I thought you would have a great shot (you'll still probably get in off the waitlist). Did you interview go poorly, how were your ecs?

accepted people: did you let them know they were your top choice already, or did you contact them at all post-interview?

I hope you are accepted off that waitlist soon abe man! :D Does "highly ranked" indicate some ordering of the waitlist? I mean Columbia can't tell ~900 waitlisted people that they're all highly ranked  .

I'm just amazed that your mailman comes in at 10am - I have to wait another couple hours and its killin' me!!

Logan, thanks for the support. We'll see what happens. My interview was weird but I thought it went well. First of all, my interviewer was more than an hour late and I was the last one waiting for an interview. The interview was prett short, about 20-30 min. She complimented my stats then asked me where else I applied and how I would decide where to go. I was a little uncomfortable about that, but tried to convey the fact that I was very interested in P&S. It seemed like she thought I wanted to go to Harvard or Yale. I don't know why, especially since those schools didn't even invite me for an interview.

For the rest of you interested in the letter...It actually says my application falls in the category of "very highly ranked" applicants. I think it's just a form letter, but if anyone has a letter with different wording, please post it.

Well looks like people in the mid-west won't get the good news from Columbia before Tuesday either... priority or not :D . I just checked my mail and all I got was bills...

I heard somewhere that Columbia rates their waitlist into thirds, so you must be in the top third. That is good, because a ton of the students that I talked with at Columbia got in off the waitlist! Still waiting for my waitlist, so hopefully it will not be too much longer! But congrats to all of you that have gotten in -- you must be absolutely super and I hope that you enjoy the school!

friggin columbia mail services. last time p&s mailed me something it got here (40 blocks away) in over a week.

i just checked my mail and the woman at our mail services told me that THEY DONT SORT MAIL ON SATURDAYS!!! i asked about this monday and she was like "the mail doesn't come on monday, so we wont either" and i was like "well the mail comes on saturday you ******ed cow..."

argh. i hate this. i have decisions from columbia and nyu just sitting there waiting for me. i feel like im in some cheesy love story.
