Why haven't I got one yet??? I received a waitlist from NYU dated the 15th!!! Why haven't I gotten a Columbia one? I am in Wash DC...

I don't mean to scare people here, but I heard from a friend (who called today) that another batch of rejections is going out this week...

does anyone REALLY know how many people they waitlist??? none of this "oh i heard from a friend that they waitlist everyone after interview that they don't accept" or "i heard from a friend whose roommate knew the dean..."
does anyone know for sure? i know they reject post interview, so how many do they really waitlist?

Congratulations everybody who got accepted to Columbia!!!

For people who are waitlisted, I got a good story for you. This person who got eventually accepted off of waitlist to Columbia told me that when he got his waitlist, he sent a letter, informing them of how much he is still interested in Columbia. He was called in for a second interview. Then, they talked for awhile. Finally, the interviewer said, "What would you do if I gave you an acceptance letter right now?" He signed it on the spot and was IN! I am not implying that they do this all the time, but they might favor people who would die to go to Columbia over people who have other schools in mind so that they can increase their acceptance rate.

Choker: I checked this thread today thinking maybe you got in. From all the threads that I read, I thought that you might be the one that they will pick. But don't give up yet!

thanks for the vote, dude.

i've actually sent two letters of interest including a letter of intent post-interview. i will send in many many many more in the coming weeks and see what it gets me. i will also tap the handful of department heads i know at columbia and see if they can do anything for me. i dont know what my chances are, considering the waitlist appears to be so extensive, but we'll see. hopefully it will all work out. as for now, though, im just waiting for the mount sinai decision...

really guys, thanks for the support. it means a lot to me.

So how many of you are pretty sure your'e going there? I'm holding out on Yale, but . . .I kinda' think I'd go to Columbia anyway . . . who else? I wanna know my future classmates!

Congrats to everyone who got in! I wish I could be among you guys. Anyway, so did everyone who was waitlisted get the "very highly ranked" letter? If so I guess that doesn't tell us much about our chances. Just wondering.

I also got the 'very highly ranked' waitlist letter. I want to congratulate everyone who got in. I think it's a real honor to go to P and S and you deserve all the credit in the world.

Did everyone's 'very highly ranked' letter include the line about "the rank assigned your application by our Committee clearly entitles you to this status..."?

yep, just heard i got waitlisted, with that same exact language -- prob every1 got that same letter

anyways, congrats to every1 that got in (and those that are on the waitlist) :D

i will be withdrawing my app (gonna stay in cali) so mebbe that helps just a ittie tiny bit? hehe

Great...now I am expecting a rejection!!!!! Can't wait for the mail......

ok folks, here's the scoop:

from what i understand - based on a conversation with someone at the admissions office - some people did get rejected post-interview because they were 'unqualified'. the waitlist, however, is comprised of 'highly ranked applicants'. however, in the last 2 years, there have been very few people who've gotten in off the waitlist compared to years past when there was significant waitlist movement.

this is what i was told. i wish all of us could get in and be a part of the p and s tradition - it certainly is something special.

good luck to all of you.

Hey I am kinda new to this site. I found out I got into P and S last Fri., and I still can't wipe the smile off my face :) b/c I was totally not expecting. That school is absolutely amazing.
As for going, more than likely I won't pass it up. I got in to Southwestern and am waiting on Baylor (TX resident). There is a huge tuition disparity, but I think it will pay off. Any advice will be appreciated. Congratulations to those accepted and good luck to all those on the waitlist.
PS
Is anyone sure they are going to pass/fail? They didn't tell me that.

Hey choker! Keep your chin up. I talked to someone who is doing his internship at the hospital I work at (graduated last year) and he told me two things 1) About 1/3 of his class came off the wait list 2) If you don't think your interview went well or even want to ask about your chances you can schedule a second interview, which generally happens directly with the Dean (which means it is do or die time) so as far as a reliable source, I believe him because he got pulled from the wait list after doing the second interview. Also I was warned: you (as it sounds you have) need to keep hammering that Columbia is your first choice (I am kinda curious if applying to cornell ED is hurting you) He also warned me the waitlist doesn't even start to move until early May (but don't wait until may to keep hammering that point)....my adive is to also go talk to Dean Geisler she gave me alot of great advice for this process (and very good insight)

I just completely screwed myself over.......I sent Columbia a nice letter in December.....and I also recently decided to send NYU a nice letter....however I mailed it to Columbia!!!!!!!! I wrote NYU School of Medicine, but put in Columbia's address!!!!!! Who will get this letter??? What will they do with it???? Am I doomed???? :p :p

Hi Everyone,

I don't know about that cm7b5 Hopefully the person(office personnel who files it) who opens it will understand that within all the mess and confusion of applying to medical school mistakes do happen. Good Luck..

cm7b5...I hope you didn't write they were both your first choice!!!!!

thanks trout, are you from columbia? when did you graduate? yeah im gonna get on it, but im weary of the earlier post that there will be less waitlist movement this year as was the case last year. whatever. as for applying EDP to cornell, i asked geisler about that and she said no other school could know.

-congrats guys

Choker...I actually think that there is the *potential* for more waitlist movement this year just because schools are so far behind and people who may have pulled their application because of acceptances to hopkins and other non-rolling schools (standford?, Washu) maybe holding on to a spot that normally (and eventually) they won't use....but honestly your guess is as good as mine...as for your other question I graduated a couple of years ago and the last part, I was just wondering if it made your letters of rec later than most...but I guess you are right with the fiasco this year yeah it would be really hard to tell what was going on....I was told by rumor that Cornell and Columbia talk, I don't know if there is ANY truth to this rumor just have heard it...which made me nervous because I actually interviewed at Cornell before I even had an interview offer at Columbia and of course told cornell they were my first choice, (Columbia was/is by far my first choice) and obviously told Columbia the same....I again don't know if there is any truth to that rumor

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!! I'M GOING!!!!!!!! SEE YOU IN THE FALL! AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO HASN'T HEARD YET.

Alice when did you ge it??? Today (wednesday)?????? I am in Maryland, too....and I haven't heard anything....

Alice, I am so happy for you. Guess you will no longer anxiously check the Northwestern webpage with me, and that we will definitely not be classmates next year. I didn't even apply to Columbia. Congratulations, and now maybe I can get your spot at UVA. :D
So why did I check this thread you might wonder? I saw that you got into Columbia on another thread, and wanted to congratulate you on a smaller forum.

Sweet...I am now a "highly ranked alternate". I feel awesome about myself

hip hip hooray! congrats Alice.

Well nothing today, guess that means I'm rejected. That pretty much sucks. I wasnt expecting to get in, but I thought I would get a waitlist. I will probably write them to find out how I was unqualified. My numbers were above their averages, and I know numbers dont mean anything, but I have some volunteering. My interview went well. I dont have any research, but thats because I was a divison 1 athlete, and I thought they licked athletes. Oh well, sorry for the venting, congratulations to those accepted and waitlisted. Does anyone know exactly when they are sending rejections?

Sorry for the licked, they definitely didnt do that (liked)

don't freak out until you hear it from the horse's mouth, folks! i emailed them on 2/15 because i thought my contact info might be out of date. turns out it was: they mailed the acceptance to another address (in va) and it hasn't gotten there yet. i got an email today.

i know it's hard not to jump to conclusions. i was sure i had been rejected because i hadn't heard. my good buddy just heard he is WL too, which is not so bad at columbia. both my friends who go there got in off the alternate list. (incidentally, they both got off in one of those mysterious "2nd interviews" with Frantz).

So good luck to everyone, esp Choker. And thank you for all the congratulations. I don't think I deserve this more than any of you - but I promise I appreciate it as much as any of you would. I am truly grateful and I really hope that things work out for you guys.

Yay, I got waitlisted! At least it's not a complete rejection, ahhh but it might as well have been if there are going to be like 900 people on the waitlist. NEVERTHELESS, now the drama for DUKE begins!!! If some columbia people are also waiting to hear, we can start the show in that thread, SO come on over!!!!!

I haven't heard anything...and I am in Maryland....this looks bad...I hope I am not the only SDNer to get rejected post-interview..in retrospect I can see why I will be rejected....Frantz made some comment and I was kind of thrown for a loop....but the same thing happened at Penn....I hope this isn't foreshadowing........god I hope Penn accepts me.....I want this all to end....congrats to everyone who got in, and are set with where they will spend the next four years of their lives... :D

Any post-interview rejections yet?

hey cmXXX, I'm in PA and I haven't heard any news either. Well, some say, no news is good news - but I say "bah humbug"

Me too...I'm in Boston and I've received nothing, although the mail for my building seems really slow.

Its pretty sad...a week ago I thought my chances at Columbia stood at fair and then I got rejected at NYU (major surprise--thought my interview went well) and now I'll be happy if I get waitlisted.

Man does this waiting thing suck...

i know that feeling all too well. i got the nyu rejection a few hours after the columbia waitlist. it seems that the probability of getting off such an enormous waitlist is so small that i would have almost preferred to have been outright rejected.

oh well.

goddamn i hope i get into sinai. PPPPPPPPPLEEEEEEEEASE!!!!
oh, if i could just win this one...

Sinai, NYU, Penn, Columbia- Any one will do!!!! Choker, I think you and I have something in common!

Choker-
Was the NYU reject a complete shock? I mean, for sure I don't think I am Mr. super applicant or anything but my stats are way above their averages and I thought my interview went well. What gives??

Man...this whole thing was supposed to work out and now I feel like its spinning out of control.

See the Penn thread--we'll be able to check our status there online the week of March 11th. I am SO hoping for that acceptance (or yale). Sheesh, but if I got rejected at NYU, it doesn't exactly give me tons of hope... Oh well. We've pretty much done all we can by now. :)

you all have a leg up on me: penn didn't want to interview me (and neither did yale).

-although i am not even entertaining the thought, it would be the most poetically beautiful thing if harvard came through after all this. :) :D

but that's not happening.

People...don't lose hope! As a fellow waitlistee (again! number 3 for me!) there is still plenty of hope. When I was interviewing at Columbia, my interviewer told me that about half the class gets in off the waitlist. Trust me, there is hope! Just keep waiting. P&S loves students who love them. If you are on the waitlist and really want to go to Columbia, write them and tell them. It will count A LOT for them!

Good luck to everyone!

I know my mailman is ******ed (and thus mail delayed beyond what would be considered typical), I STILL haven't even received my waitlist notification.

Is anyone still waiting as of today (thursday)??

Thanks.

Sorry to bring bad news, but I called columbia today and if you havent heard, they are sending rejections post interview out this week

First, congrats to all those who been accepted at P&S, I strongly encourage all accepted students to try and come to the revisit weekend about which you should be receiving information. If you are planning to come it is a great way to meet classmates, if you are on the fence it's a great chance to meet students and future classmates and get any remaining questions answered.
To those who have been wait listed, have faith. If Columbia is truly the only school you would want to attend, let the admissions people know, enthusiasm counts. However, if you write crap like that to all of the schools you were waitlisted at, don't bother. There are second interviews with Dr. Frantz that have been very helpful in the past.
If you were rejected, take heart...after a few years here I have come to realize that the people who do admssions here and at other schools know exactly what they are looking for and who will do well in their school's system. If you were a good enough candidate to have been interviewed at P&S, you will get into medical school (provided it wasn't the only school you applied to). There were many schools I was rejected from, and in the final analysis, though I thought I would like to be elsewhere, I am definitely the happiest to be where I am. In the end, people end up in a school that is right for them. Believe me, the people who do admissions know a lot more about their school than you do.

Just remember, the road is long and the hurdles are high, but this too shall pass.

p.s., not sure how this works but if you have a burning question I will try to check back here every so often...I have an easy rotation coming up...

Just got off the phone with them. THe lady said that aceptances were mailed Wednesday, waitlists on THursday and more letters (aka rejections) this week.

re-visit weekend=celebration=PARTY in the city :D

I just got the finaid package in the mail today; I still can't believe I got in...
Does anyone know when revisit is?
grasshopper, trout, scooby, alice, where are you guys from??

Just letting people know that rejection letters have gone out as I will be the first to receive a post interview rejection from Columbia, its a bunch of crap in the letter. Oh well, it wasnt my top choice, but still very dissapointing.

Yeah Logan!! I can't wait to get mine!!!!!

cmb75 you are funny! Invite me to the party while you're at it. I'm eagerly awaiting my R letter too

I've been interviewing on the west coast the past three days, planning to call home every night to see what the mailman had brought (or not). First night: UVa pre-interview rejection. Second night: didn't get a chance to call, because my Dad called me in the afternoon with the news that I GOT IN!!!! :D OMIGOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I thought it was a fluke I got an interview, no other school of this caliber has been interested in me, and then I had this very up and down sort of interview.........It's still sinking in. It did give me a lot of confidence for my UWSOM interview.

A big thank-you to all the SDNers who've helped me out along the way, and good luck to those who are still waiting or waitlisted. :D :) :D

I can't wait to see everyone on the second look weekend :)

Congrats SMW!!!!!!
